I would like to use some mods (the popular ones, not shady and new ones), but I'm not sure that they're safe since to use them you have to delete the meta-inf file thing, and I don't want to mess anything up. Any ideas?

Deleting meta inf doesn't mess anything up, just remember some mods conflict with other and will cause minecraft to blackscreen, which is easy to fix.

If I had received a grain of sand everytime someone posts without understanding the whole argument of the thread I'd have the goddamn Sahara.
Yes mods are safe. And do not worry, deleting METE-INF in no way effects gameplay. I didn't see many things in that file.
If you don't believe me, try it yourself. Besides, if something DOES go wrong, just use ''Force update'' giving you a new minecraft jar.
All mods come with the risk of unpredictable glitches and breaks, it just comes with the territory of user made content. The closest substitute to mods i can think of is hosting a bukkit server and picking and choosing your own plugins, but even then, they're very different. I've never tried mods, because i just prefer the game without them, but game destroying problems are very, very rare in popular mods.
Re-downloading/installing minecraft only takes minutes, and deleting the meta-inf just allows the mods to work for whatever reason (I'm not very code-savvy).
Your biggest concern should be where you're downloading the mods from because of malware, viruses, etc. Your safest bet is to download directly from the official forum post of that mod, and other well known sites that you can trust.
You're being more paranoid than you should be. META-INF is merely a hash check to see if the minecraft binary is modified. Being these are called modifications, they and META-INF don't get along. Removing it does nothing to alter gameplay.
If there was ever a virus in the 'new and shady' mods, they won't get past the reviews of the people who use it, and it will be taken down by moderators. Even still, you should have an antivirus installed anyway. Viruses should not be a concern.
They're absolutely safe ONLY DOWNLOAD THE MODS FROM MINECRAFT FORUMS DO NOT DOWNLOAD IT FROM ANY OTHER WEBSITES also if you find a mod but the maker don't a have any pictures posted up on the thread then don't download it, 99% of the mods from minecraft forums are absolutely safe the other 1% is without pictures :wink.gif:
Each modder will post videos, or wright tutorials on how to install each mod. However I will give you the basics.
NOTE THIS IS FOR WINDOWS XP
First click start
go to run
type %appdata%
look for a folder called .minecraft
That is your folder where almost all of your mods will go.
90% of mods on here also require ModLoader created by Risugami. I recommend getting that mod first.
You will also need Winrar if you dont have it you need to get it before you can mod. (you can also use .zip)
Once you have modloader open your .minecraft folder
then open bin
then right click on minecraft.jar and choose to open with Winrar or .zip
Copy the files inside the modloader file into your minecraft.jar
then delete the META-INF folder
Close everything out and start minecraft.
Modloader simply allows other mods to be ran on your minecraft game. With out modloader many mods wont work. adding modloader will make no difference in game but once you add mods if there is ever a problem with mod or instalation of that mod modloader will give you an error text report that you can post on modloader's forum post and risugami can leave responce on how to fix it. :happy.gif: Hope this helps if you have any other questions dont hesitate to pm me. I also do installation tutorials on you tube if you prefer video.
ONLY EVER DOWNLOAD MODS WITH PICS OR VIDEOS!
as Minernitor said before, ones with no pics are most-likely viruses.
I saw a thread before named TIME-MACHINA and all there was in the thread wwas a download link with no pics or info.
That would be an example of an obvious virus. Mods that do, however, have pictures and/or videos are very safe.
Also, don't get any mods from planetminecraft.net because they all suck. (to my knowledge, that place could be labeled the ghetto minecraftforum.net)

Nope, we have an entire forum dedicated to to destroying your game, with promises of awesome new additions, fake user reviews, fake youtube videos on them, and fake updates.

Then learn something before you rush to the forums to post about how much of a noob you are.

Of course they're safe
I don't make spelling mistakes, I make new words
Well, it has a use, but it interferes with mods.
