.zip is tedious because you need to put the files in a folder first then you put it in the minecraft.jar. .rar makes the process faster.
Why do almost 96% of the mods I download use .zip? I use Winrar and
it doesn't let me extract the zip into the jar directly.
its a bit uncommon for one of my favorite mods to have both choices so people could choose which they want.
I have no idea, although .zip's are a more widely compatible format.

Plus with mods like modloader once modloader is installed and you have modloader compatible mods you can drag and drop the zip files into a mods folder and it's plugin style. Rars cannot do that currently that i know of anyway.
Rar files use a horrible compression system that I really hate. I can open them on my mac and stuff, but I'd much rather use the mod folder system or stuff them into my minecraft jar that's actually a folder with a .jar extension on it :tongue.gif:
If you're on a mac use the unarchiver to make the minecraft.jar and actual folder. Then from there you can use an unzipping program of your choice to just drag and drop the files into the folder. Also on a mac you don't have to delete the META-INF folder. Hope this helps but if your on a PC, sorry.
And to the people saying macs can't open .rars... O RLY.
Of course they can.
i use winrar and i can transfer files directly just set the default program for opening .zip and .jar to winrar and it should work. the problem you are having probably relates to the posibility you are using the default windows program to open the zip file while win rar to open the jar file hence preventing you from copy and pasting files because they dont allow direct copy and pasting between them.
