Welcome to the Modder's Union! We, the modders of Minecraft, provide a service to the community, and as such are entering into a union.
Visit the Texture Artist's Union, too! There's nothing stopping you being a member of both Unions, and they will work very closely together to ensure that everyone is happy.
We work together to ensure that our work remains our own, and have an emblem of membership that shows that the modder is backed by the union, in case of discrepancies and/or loss of intellectual property. This emblem is the symbol that represents a license of creative works, which will be written as soon as the proper wording is agreed upon.
If you are a member of the Modder's Union, please include this symbol somewhere in your signature, post format, or avatar. It can be shrunk to a smaller size and pasted into an existing signature, if that is more convenient.
Admins should use the following symbol:
If you aren't a modder, or haven't yet applied for membership, and still want to support the MU, please use the following badge to do so:
Be sure to check this page often, as it will frequently update (hopefully)
So what is the Modder's Union?
The Modder's Union (henceforth referred to as the MU) is a group to allow modders to better voice their concerns or suggestions to Notch and Curse on matters regarding changes to either Minecraft itself, or Minecraft Forum. Instead of having to each speak the same opinions separately, we can now collaborate as a group, and speak with a more powerful, united voice. The TAU (Texture Artist's Union) have recently gone through this process and have been able to negotiate with the Admins of the site much faster as a united group.
How can I join?
Joining the MU is easy. Simply post an aplication in response, and Admins will review it, and state their decision. However, since this is about uniting modders, not excluding them, we won't just be accepting the elite. Every modder is welcome, and we are far more likely to welcome you than reject you. See the application criteria below for more detailed information on how to structure your application.
Can I become an Admin?
Certainly. Provided you are an established modder. While everyone can become a member, the modders who really know their stuff, and have created not just exceptional, but also popular mods have the opportunity to be an Admin.
What if I'm not a modder?
That's fine. While you aren't exactly a member, you can still support the cause by displaying the MU logo, or linking to this thread, in your signature. It helps to spread the word and to show that we are united.
We are taking donations for our website that will be developed. If you have adfly proceeds, that is fine. If you have anything else, that is also fine. We are needing to pay for hosting services for MinecraftUnion.net, and would really appreciate anything you can spare! We will be sharing this site with the TAU, but, with any luck, both Unions will have separate sections on the site.
General criterion for joining the union:
-You must have created at least one mod. Please include a link to your work in the application comment.
-You must be willing to support the union and join in voting from time to time.
-You must include the Union's Official Seal in your signature.
-You must conform to posting guidelines.
-The work you do has to be original, that is to say that if you are simply compiling mod packs, it doesn't count.
-Mod continuations or expansions are acceptable, since they still require modding skill to create.
Admin criterion:
-You must be an established modder and be voted in by a majority of the current admins
Anything posted henceforth in this topic not in direct reference to the union or its affiliates will be reported and deleted.
The idea is to have a united voice for modders in times of need. When Notch announces he's going to bury all the useful bits of code for modding deep in various class files, so that mod compatibility with drop dramatically, or the Admins of this forum decide mods are pointless and want to get rid of the modding section (I know neither of these will happen, but it's the principle of the thing), we can have a united voice to try and make ourselves heard. When not in times of need, we have a place to chat and talk with other modders about what we've been doing recently. For example, in the TAU thread, a lot of people have been posting 1.8 textures for critique from other artists. So far, the TAU has proved to be a very useful system, and the MU is attempting to branch into other areas.
The point about the united voice is that it doesn't come across that way. What usually happens is that everyone shares similar opinions, but each voices then separately, on often not very clearly. This means that a lot of people's opinions get skipped over due to the sheer number of them. However, if, instead of a jumble of opinions scattered around (which does happen, I've seen it), we present a single, well-written response, listing pros and cons, as well as suggestions and alternatives, we are far more likely to be listened to. The TAU recently had a dispute with the admins of this forum about the restructuring of the Mapping and Modding sections. There was also a time a while ago when a new rule change in the Texture Packs section caused a lot of uproar. The latter was dealt with without the TAU, the former with. The earlier dispute took several days to reach a conclusion, whereas the more recent one, with the TAU's help, reached some semblance of a conclusion within a matter of hours. It's simply a matter of organisation. Besides, we're not forcing anyone to donate. All we ask if you sign up is to participate in voting from time to time, which could be as little as five minutes of time a month. Perhaps less.
The admins don't actually get any special privileges. They are just the ones willing to give up more of their time to help organise the Union. If we held a vote, it's quite likely we'd end up with people as admins who either don't want to or can't spare the time to do it. However, that does not mean that we won't listen to the members when deciding who should be an admin. If members have specific issues with a certain admin, then we will take that into serious account. We will also listen to the members when voting for new admins.
Looks great! I am surprised, honestly at the resistance to the MU. The TAU has proven successful, and we are just trying to help out the modding community to have the same success in areas.
We do not require donations, they are entirely optional.
While appreciated, they are NOT mandatory.
That being said, congratulations Proloe, I'll have to take the bronze logo and pop it onto my banner. :smile.gif:
Also, I think that I have a proposal for the logos that might make everyone happy:
Just using the letter in the different gradelevel [e.g. gold, solver, etc]. It seems to represent the union well, and is not complicated.
What do you think?
I'll get back more feedback and alter the OP of the TAU to link here tonight after bio lab. :smile.gif:
I think the logos work well as just the letters. It's quite sleek. I think one of the problems we're having with the MU is the lack of members. The TAU started up with a few members already, but the MU doesn't have any. We need people to join to get this kicked off. As was said before, you can't have a Union with just one member.

^^^^^ This ^^^^^
Also, I am not sure why there is not a positive community response to this, considering the overwhelmingly positive affinity to the TAU. Perhaps you can extend your feelers to the mod community by replying to their threads and in the response including a link and invitation here? I can recruit the TAU to assist, if you think it will help.
I'll probably mention it in passing to a few modders. I don't really want to go around telling people they must join.
I didn't really mean as a forced induction [no, not a turbocharger :sad.gif: ] I meant as a friendly invitation to at least check out the site and see what it is we are trying to accomplish. I don't want to tell you what to do, after all, this is your union. :smile.gif:
Oh, I know. I just don't want to seem like we're desperate. However, we do need members. I'll mention it in a few threads or PMs if I happen to be posting there anyway.
Since no one has the balls to apply I'l go first!

I would join this wee thing you've got goin here but my mod isn't released yet so i can't =P
Also, you can only have 1 picture in your sig and to be honest, i'd rather have my dragons than a union symbol that doesn't do very much xD
You can, if you see my signature, edit the logo into an existing image.
Also, welcome to SuicidalCooki3! First member to make a proper application!
A released mod is not necessarily required. If you have a mod in the works, and can show that it has made some progress, that may be enough. A released mod is preferred, though.
In the MODDING community most people don't worry about people stealing there coded because of one of two reasons: it's very easy to find the copyer that it's basically look at a beginners mod (tho not all do this) and second most peoples code is nearly identical only the art differs.
This has not been a success at any means :sad.gif: sorry fOr the truth
It's not really about theft of work, though that can be part of the Union. The Union is mostly about having a united voice when stating suggestions or concerns to Notch or the admins of the forum. Notch, for example, is not likely to listen to a few people saying around these forums that the HD Patcher should be included in the vanilla game. However, if a large group presented a formal suggestion directly to Notch, with a list of reasons why the HD Patcher should be included, and a list of people who voted for the movement, he's more likely to listen, wouldn't you agree?
Save the signature to somewhere on your hard drive, open it with Paint.NET or GIMP or another image editing program that supports transparency (you'll need this for the logo). The first two I quoted are free. Then save the logo, and simply copy and paste it over your signature. You can resize it to fit. Upload the resulting image to imageshack.us and use it as your signature. Sorry if this sounds long winded.

That said, duty calls, and I must sleep.
Good luck on this union!
