I have no experience with creating scripts or mods with java so I'm putting this out there as an idea to see what the modding community can come up with. I have no intention to abuse the mod, but had in mind to see if it were possible to make it usable with bukkit for a small community server. (20 players in size.)
Now, in Pern there is a cycle of deadly rainfall that devours living tissue exposed to it. Plants and trees evolved on the planet to avoid being destroyed, but the "threadfall" is predicted by the positions and cycles of the moon. Sometimes it falls out of synch and is difficult to track but generally it's predictable much like rainfall might be.
Now my question is, would it be possible to make the rainfall act as "threadfall" would on rare occassion? Killing exposed creatures and humans (players) if they are not in secured shelter? (I.e. cobblestone/smoothstone/under a tree-lumber built homes)
And if so, is there anyone that is willing to make this a bukkit mod for a small multiplayer community? I know it sounds crazy but it goes with a theme I had been working on for a while now and honestly, I couldn't beat my way out of a plastic bag with java.
I'm also on the hunt for a dragon mod that might fit the Pernese theme. And for those that are curious as to what the heck Pern is. Here.
Actually, my mate and I will be working on a SMP Pern mod soon. We are waiting until after the final release of the game. Hopefully adapting the Mojang dragon to Pernese dragons will make life easier. We (upon completion) will be running a whitelist server for Dragonrider fans. Willing to hear any ideas anyone might have for content. We are planning, dragons, runner beasts, wherrys, a few cannon plants, thread, pre-fab weyrs and Crafthalls, player built Holds and more.
I will be making an accurate map of the southern part of the northern continent and the southern continent.
One big concern is making sure that people will be willing to do some of the menial work in order to have a fully fleshed out feel to it. I have a feeling that everyone will want to be a dragonrider, but if they are what is the point? I think that with a automated hold population, and you start as a peasant, earn the title of Lord Holder and get a one use "hold wand" or some such, Benden would be populated by Admin and mods, and we would fly searches for the reestablishment of the other weyrs to defend against the coming threadfall. Dragon rider status would be earned. If your reach a certain Hold Lord level you are offered a choice of entering a Crafthall or getting put on a list for the search or remaining Lord Holder.
Lord Holders would have a bonus skillset, Crafters would have a different bonus skill set and Dragonriders would...well be dragonriders. HOlders would have to tithe...maybe. I wouldn't want problems because of this, but it is key to the storyline. Crafters would "discover" new tech over time. Also once the threadfall began, in order to maintain Dragonrider status, you would have to kill X number of thread.
Thread would destroy any non stone, ore or dirt block it touched, and if it hit any grassy or farmed dirt it would make it bare earth.
Also between would be cool, but I don't know how well it would work. I was thinking that the nether could become the Red Star...IDK.
I'm not sure how well it would work though. Any ideas for in game progression that resembles cannon, or for content are welcome.
Also if anyone would like to collab on this when we start, Pm me.

I know it's been like... seven years... but did you or anyone else make progress with a Pern mod/map?
