I'm using this thread to help organize the development of a mod to a mod of Minecraft. Essentially, the goal of this project is to put buildings into Millénaire that has a theme of the culture from the Islamic world as it roughly existed around the year 1100 AD (give or take several centuries). Essentially this is the Arab equivalent of the Norman villages as they existed during the same time period as exists currently in the Millénaire mod.
The ultimate goal of this project is to either hack into or get support from Kinniken to allow alternate cultures to be installed into the baseline mod. Preliminary steps along the way will be to create building files for some of the standard types of buildings (town halls, farms, markets, barracks, etc.) and to create perhaps a couple of different add-on village types using these buildings as custom add-ons to Millénaire.
If you are interested in participating with this process, please reply to this thread and at least help us out by testing this new village as we get it put together. Building ideas with an Arabic architecture theme are always appreciated. If you don't know how to make the building files for Millénaire we will also gladly provide some technical assistance towards that end. Links to photos of Arabic architecture, especially to more mundane buildings like homes, farms, bakeries and other ordinary buildings rather than mosques and palaces would be appreciated. Yes, we will be building mosques and palaces with this group so that won't be neglected, but it shouldn't be the only buildings available either.
For starters, we are collaboratively building "model buildings" for use within the village on an SMP server with the following address:
86.0.136.164:25565
Please, use this server only if you are interested in helping out with this project. It is being donated by one of the project participants although we might end up moving elsewhere if demand is high enough or circumstances change.
Additionally, communcation with many of those participating with the development of this project can be found by using the esper.net IRC servers using the channel #millenaire. Feel free to join us there if you have any questions about this project or for that matter anything related to Millénaire or even Minecraft in general.
An example of one of the buildings from that server can be seen here:
Basic building philosophies that should be followed:
Use largely Sandstone as a building material.
Planks are fine, but be sparing with it acknowledging that wood is a relatively scarce material in deserts.
Most roofs ought to be flat-topped for simple buildings.
Other style guidelines may be added on top of these, but in general try to give an "arabic" feel to the buildings.
I'm still not convinced, but I'm always in to help.
What we need is some way for villages to survive on sand, (for desert biomes that the Arabic villages would naturally build in)Maybe we could just completely replace wood with sandstone. We also need some coding genius to figure out in the first place how we can have village types dependant on biome types.
any ideas?
How exactly would we start?
Would love to help as I stated in the millenaire thread :>
The easiest way to start is to get into Minecraft and actually build some houses the "old fashioned" way one block at a time within Minecraft. We can either cooperatively work on a common SMP server, or we can exchange world save files if you want to go that route. After we get that going, let's start creating the *.png files that are needed to give building instructions to the village wives.
We will start in baby steps, and if we want to get into the biome issue or doing some other fancy kind of support, we will get to that eventually. For now, let's just make the village and then deal with the other issues as we get to them.
Any suggestion for an SMP server to work together on would be appreciated.
Could I request that we make this thread for more cultures than just Arabic? As I said in the main thread, I'd be quite interested in a Japanese version of the mod, which I'd be quite content to get a bulk of work done on in future, as they've always had a fascinating culture to me. I'll also contribute to the Arabic side, as I've been working on starting modding, so I can attempt to create extra items that would fit into their theme.
I'm game for additional cultures, and Japanese sounds kind of fun too. There is a need to try and keep some focus, which concentrating on just the Arabic buildings might be able to accomplish for the time being. If you are asking for my advise, help us out with the Arab buildings and then we can work together on the Japanese when the time comes... but you are certainly free to go on your own direction here too.
I've been dabbling with java programming and creating mods myself, where I think hacking into Millenaire wouldn't be too hard. Kinniken hasn't obfuscated the code, so decompiling isn't all that hard to figure out what he did if we want to extend it. I've thought about adding additional villager types anyway, so adding additional support for other cultures doesn't seem like it would be all that hard.
As a general roadmap, I'd suggest we go the following:
Create some basic buildings
Organize the new buildings into village files
Set up some basic trade networks between village types
Create some skins to replace the Norman villagers
Add additional villager types into Millenaire via Java
Dig deeper and try to add multi-cultural support (assuming Kinniken hasn't beat us to the punch first)
All of this is going to take time and it is something that I certainly want to do with the cooperation of Kinniken. In terms of creating the building files and villages themselves, the ability to add that into the game was already provided by Kinniken, so all we are doing here is essentially hooking into the existing API for that. I'm sure there will be additional roadblocks and problems we will encounter along the way, so we can certainly work together on this.
Hey guys, I will gladly help with this mod, I can't do textures or mod or anything, but I can build the homes and well, actually I can do the textures for the people. Tell me how I can help and I will!

CAN YOU GUYS TELL ME WHAT I CAN DO? -THANKS
ALSO: I suggest calling this mod Millén Cultures? I think it is catchy.
i don't really know any, but i could already start the textures. so which items are we gonna add?
See, this is why we need a server, so many people can easily discuss which items we need or how we're gonna add them.
Oh, and if people don't mind, I'd really like to take care of the textures, having lots of items made by different artists may look out of place.
Oh, and I'm sorry IceMoose, wait a few days till stuff falls into place and we get a clear grip on what's happening.
I sort of like the name. It also translates roughly into "thousand cultures", as Millénaire means "Millenium" in English. The "Arab Culture" theme was just a starting point to get all of this going in the first place. After running it through Google Translate (I'm not a native French speaker), "thousand cultures" translates into "mille cultures" in French. I could live with that name, and it gets rid of the accent mark (as it really does in French BTW). What do you think of that name?
if cultur-specific names (and maybe even behaviours) would go into text files, with including them also in the configuration files, new cultures could be added without changing the code-base of the mod. Thus working on the different cultures could be done without clogging up Kinnikens time.
Along the roadmap, we might as well simply replace the existing bitmap textures until multi-culture themes are properly incorporated. The text files, including the speech texts, could easily be done in Arabic just as they are done with French. I think we ought to stick with "Latinized" Arabic for the time being, as using Arabic Script isn't supported in Minecraft yet.
I'm viewing this as a patch on Millénaire, at least for the time being. If it gets incorporated into the main mod, I don't have a problem with that. I like "Millén Cultures" because it ties in strongly with the name "Millénaire" and avoids being perceived strictly as "that Arab patch thingy".
I am not looking at making this a completely independent mod.
I think that's the plan, yeah.
I love this idea and I'll be there to support this project as much as I can! Hopefully we can get a decent start on this within the next few weeks so that we can amaze Kinniken when he gets back from his vacation! :biggrin.gif:
"Mille Cultures" and "Millén Cultures" both sound good to me. The first one gets rid of the accent mark so it's easier to type and judging from a post above it's proper French, yet the second one rolls off the tongue much more nicely! Either way,
I might dig up some images and maybe create a building or two for this later today, but as I have the attention span of a two-year-old I'm not making any promises! =P

I'll see you there.
Edit: I can't get on, do yoiu need to be whitelisted?
No, I'm on without being whitelisted
odd

Million in Arabic is pronounced Million, and written مليون
