This is all in response to GreyAcumen's post above and King's post from a few pages ago. I'm not quoting them because they are way long, and this post is prolly gonna be way long as it is. I've provided links for reference's sake.
With regards to the portal storms:
I totally understand what Grey's getting at. While I personally think the conflict is cool, the Aether is expansive enough that there are bound to be people who desperately want to play in the Aether, but would spend every moment cursing the day the portal storms were thought up.
I really like the idea, but I support Grey's opinion that the storms shouldn't be in the Aether. It is too big a change from the original idea for everyone to like it. An optional module would be cool, though.
Even if the storms are removed, it would still be within the themes of the game to include the block-by-block Aether purification/Nether corruption that I suggested last page, as it is a fully player-controlled way of expressing the Nether/Aether conflict.
I also support that all nether materials should be removed from the Aether by default.
Having a portal effect onscreen as you fall is, in my opinion, a good idea as well. It evens out the fact that you can't dig up in the Nether and it leaves the question of dimensional or not dimensional fully up to the player
The Aechor Plant:
So there is a plant native to the Nether but thrives in the Aether and is the preferred food of the Moas? I'm not seeing it. We all know the only tasty thing to ever crawl out of the Nether is the zombie pigmen :tongue.gif:
I know people disagree, but I personally feel that Aechor plants fit in quite well with the Aether themes and doesn't need any further explanation.
The Moas / Airship:
I agree with GreyAcumen here. Moas do not look built for extensive flying. I'm not talking from science or physics, they just look too much like flightless birds, real and fictional, to get away with unlimited flight with a passenger. As such, it would make more sense to have them be able to flap a couple of times and then glide to the next island.
I'm opposed to the stat differences from breeding as well. I'd like it simple and aesthetic only. I do like the leashes however, and I think that it's much more convenient to keep them in your inventory than have them follow you around.
I also like the airship. It's a good way to keep unlimited flight temporarily out of reach. It's also not too much of a technological step because its primary component is organic.
I do feel that it should be unlimited though, just fueled by something magical like ambrosium. Maybe even floatsand.
If there are Nether portal storms in the Aether, shouldn't there be Aether portal storms in the Nether? Why would the valkyries only be on the defensive, and ghasts (and pigmen) only be on the ofensive. It would be much more of a "war" if both sides attacked and defended.
OMG...so cool....ALL PEOPLE POSTING PLEASE PAY 5 DIAMONDS!
How about instead of 5 diamonds we each pay 50 cents. If almost every person on this thread did that we might get quite a bit of money raised. :happy.gif:
Imagine, if these content makers received a nickle... a nickle... for every view this thread gets.
Yes, because Ghasts look oh-so capable of prolonged flight, unlike the Moas.
Oh, wait...
I specifically stated that I wasn't going off of physics or realism. It's not that they look like they can't fly, it's that they look like ostriches, chocobos, and, wait for it, moas. None of those can fly effectively. This draws a logical association that moas in-game cannot fly effectively. Minecraft is a game largely based off of logical associations (crafting recipes, etc)
I'm just suggesting that either they adjust the moas flying effectiveness to reflect this association, or to change the appearance of the moas to throw off this association. If they, like you, think I'm dead wrong they can ignore the suggestion.
btw, I see no logical reason that what is essentially a tentacled balloon cannot fly.
Quick question, will this mod be compatible with ejhopkins' WildGrass mod?
This mod looks absolutely amazing in my opinion. GreyAcumen, if you don't like it, make something better. The modders are obviously putting a lot of their own time into this, they're not getting paid (donations don't count) to make it, they're doing it because they want to. If you don't like the end product, don't download it.

I think discussing flight distance for Moas should wait until the mods been out for a while - getting a feel for the aether and seeing how necessary they are to survive is important to making a decision here. If the flight seems off after playing it, we can always talk about it then.
I like the idea of airships - I don't think they should wear out, but rather should work like a furnace - you put a fuel source in, and the ship burns it until the fuel runs out, at which point it starts to drop and you lose control. Working in things like burning the fuel faster while ascending might be good, but ultimately that's a detail that could be a pain to code and isn't necessary.
Of course, it might be a long time yet before we really need to worry about any of that, since it's not hard to imagine this mod being in development for several more months, especially if new ideas that are worth serious consideration keep popping up.
"I could either see you really hating this idea, or being "okay" with it."
I cannot stress enough how poor of a design philosophy that is. Ranging from loathe to "just okay" means that the average is in the ball park of "rather dislike."
If this was just a pet project for you to have fun with, I'd understand. If you want to withdraw it from the public and make it your private toy, I'd understand. (Though there would still be a fair bit of anger from your "teasing" if that were to ever happen, just saying.) But the Aether has arisen from a community concept and is a project for the community, a project to expand the Minecraft game in ways that enhance what Minecraft is already about: A sense of directionless adventure, exploration and wonder at the landscapes, and building fantastic (in all meanings of the word) structures.
I appreciate what you guys are doing. I really do. A lot of hard work is going into this. But the Aether collab's nature is not the same as some private lolmod. Don't just throw in whatever you think YOU will find fun. Please, please, PLEASE think of the community first on the content that is put in. Don't add things that a majority of people will dislike or hate. If you want it so badly, save it for an optional secondary mod.
Personally? I despise the idea solely because of the ghasts. Combat, that's fine. Blowing my stuff up? That's not. Creepers? They're preventable. With Creepers, it's called situational awareness. It's about making sure you can't be cornered. You can prevent them blowing stuff up. Random ghasts that target the actual landscape? You can't kill them fast enough. Something is going to get blown up. I don't care how "infinitely" far Minecraft or the Aether can stretch, I don't want a cratered ruin around my home or starting location. Or anywhere near either for that matter.

Don't add explosions that can't be prevented.
I honestly think the work you have done is brilliant. I'm sorry if this has already been asked, but do you know if texture packs will be compatible with your mod? (For example, ability to re-texture what you've added to something of a higher resolution).
i was just wandering, is there a way to donate? and if so would it increase the producton speed? for each of you. and when you thought of this, were you 3 on :RedShroom:,s or smoking ???
I dunno how many times this has probably been posted but, Notch will DEFINATELY consider adding this to the game before the game is "complete" so work hard and all will be well :biggrin.gif:
You guys are epicly awesome.

If you want me to see a message or reply to it, quote me, don't just add a new reply in a "slow thread" hoping I will. Thanks
I'm sensing a major feature creep already in this mod. It's not a good thing to have more unique mobs in the Aether than in the Overworld...
It's not my fault Notch isn't adding more content. The surface world is incomplete, there are still way more features to be added before it's in a "finished" state. What you will be playing in the Aether is a finished state, not an unfinished one like the surface.
Ive been following this mod for ages so I can't wait till release, I however dont support the leashes... I think the pokeball idea is much better but then again, if you switched it back it would take up more time so... I don't know what I want...

Check out WxSand. It's a reactions game and can VERY easily be modded.

you can either resize the blockimages from 16x16 to 32x32 (64x64/128x128/etc.) or make your own blockimages (maybe recolor your texturepack images and save them)
For example i got a John Smith - Doku Mix Texturepack.
I copied the images, opened them in a new 32x32 (64x64/etc.) file and recolored the sidegrass, topgrass and dirt like it looks in the screenshots.
Example:
overworld:
aether:
sadly i had to draw some of the block/item images myself, really a pain in the ass :s
actually i reckon you can use the tint thingy like redstone
if you have ever tried skrewing around with the red stone you would know what i mean
say if i put grey wires in the redstone bit of the terrain.png
when i open up minecraft and look at unpowered redstone wires it will loook entirly black execpt for the transperent bits
now if it powered it it woudent look grey it would look red depending on the grey you use.
so basicly you just have to use the same code that red stone uses so you can tint it to dark cyan or something
(happy 100th post to me!)
was it a triumph?
because it seems like you made a note here:"HUGE SUCCESS".
anyway,
congratualtions!
was it worth it?
despite your (un)violant behavior, the only thing you managed to break so far, is my heart.
why wont we just settle for that and we'll just call it a day.
we both know that isnt going to happen.
you chose this path, now i have a suprise for you.
deploying suprise in 5, 4, 3, 2, 1:
you got: cake!
its just behind that wall of fire the floating platform you are standing on is headed.
too bad.
i already madea room for the aether portal:
10x10x5, the entrance leads from my nether room (also 10x10x5) right from the portal! (behind it)
also, i made the 2 middle rows of the celing glass, and dug up a lot of dirt to get sunshine in it!
ill take some screenshot later.
in edvance: the reason i havent added much is because im planning to make the aether room colorful and decorative with aether blocks and plants and stuff, same like i did with my nether room (i made a netherrack staircase on each side of the 2 block pathway which is soul sand, and lighted them all up, and added lava flowing out from the sides of the portal, BEST THING EVER!)
P.S. w00t! im on page 200!
Something like this?
not quite, i made 2 different rooms.
once ill figure out how to get more FPS on my free version of fraps ill make a video.

Agreed. No sense in paring back the Aether just because the main surface world is still incomplete. I think it's wonderful that the dimension will be so fleshed out - I'm probably going to end up spending far more time in the Aether than on the surface.
While the name might be a little misleading (Aechor Plant), these mobs actually originate from the Nether. I'm quite keen on the idea of subtle stories within Minecraft, so I've been playing around with a few plots for the mod. There are two plains: the Nether, which is a network of desolate, fiery caverns filled with bloodstained Cobblestone and sticky Soulsand which lies beneath the very soil of our Minecraft world, and the Aether, which is a collection of floating plains and islands, all connected together to create an opposite dimension of the skies. As you already know, these two plains are completely opposite in almost every way. A subtle plot idea that I had was that the blocks, creatures and shadows of the Nether all have an urge to "Plague" and "Spread" to anything which is pure. In some rare areas of the Aether, you would find small patches of Netherrack and Soulsand which have been placed there by Nether creatures in effort to corrupt the surrounding environment. On these patches you'll find large, poisonous vegetation: otherwise known as Aechor Plants (I might change the name now, since it does really sound like a plant which originates from the Aether). I also plan to have rare "weather" events called "Portal Storms". Basically, dark shadows will start forming in that particular area and Nether portal blocks will appear in random locations. Ghasts and other planned flying Nether creatures will escape from the portals and destroy blocks in the area (still no direct damage, since these Ghasts will be another entity which only destroys blocks). In retaliation, warriors of the Aether called Valkyries will slowly fight off the flood of monsters and then the event will end. Another idea I had was that Glowstone actually originates from the Aether, and the only reason you find them in the Nether is because it is an effort of the Valkyries to "purify" the Nether (so in a way both areas are trying to take over the other). I could either see you really hating this idea, or being "okay" with it. I'm going to guess you dislike it, but I'm really in favor of it because I really feel that the player needs some more interaction with its environment. Being able to help Valkyries fight off indirect damaging (but still deadly) Ghasts in order to speed up the retaliation is a very good way to motivate the player to interact with such events.
I'm fully against this idea. Glowstone in the Nether was already there to begin with, so it's not a really balanced idea for that to be the equal of ugly Nether materials in the Aether. I suppose if you don't want the mobs destroying your blocks you could switch the game to peaceful (I never leave peaceful anyway) but having portals pop up in an area I might actually like would be a little bit annoying.
Maybe if more Aether materials spawned in places of the Nether, it would be more balanced. But I'm still not fond of the idea and I think the worlds should just stay separate for appearance's sake.

To tell the truth, i like this idea, sounds more interesting to fight off the Ghasts from the aether, a place id love to call home... then to do it in the nether, where id get over run by pigmen or something.., sounds better then playing on peaceful too, ive always played on normal/hard, and doing that in the aether sounds much better then doing it in the Nether/overworld.
EDIT:
It reminds me of RIFT, where there are invasions, that sounds really fun on MC.
