I don't see Notch ever implementing this, but he has expressed interest in maybe allowing worlds to no longer be locked into being 128 blocks tall. There are ways to have server maps be much taller, but really we need Notch to remove that limit. With it removed (or at least increased a fair bit) you could use something like the Biome Terrain Mod to alter how the game generates maps by fiddling with the resource and cave settings. Alternatively, the ability to move between maps (ie Normal to Nether and back currently) means you could have separate worlds act as proxy layers, again using the BTM to generate separate maps with separate conditions.
Others have pointed out some issues with implementation, but one that stuck out to me was "the massive amount of mobs" which would only matter if Notch upped the limit on mob spawns. According to the wiki, up to 200 hostiles and 15 neutrals can be spawned around a player at any given time, no more. On a server with more than one person logged in, I'm pretty sure that limit applies per player (ie 3 players logged in = 600 hostiles / 45 neutrals potentially spawning). They can't initially spawn with 24 blocks of a player, will spawn in a 144x144 block area (9x9 chunks) around a player, and will despawn if further than 4 chunks (1 chunk = 16x16 blocks, so 64 blocks in a given direction) from a player.
looks like it would be awesome, however, there are a few major problems:
1: the map folder size for one of these things would be enormous, even with the new map compression update.
2: your minecraft would lag intensely for all the terrain it would have to generate at once. for some ppl, their minecraft lags enough generating the amount of terrain thats already shown. imagine 9 times that much space
Actually, It would not lag the game as much as you think,if you look in the code you can see that there is support for the generation of vertical chunks, aka, chunks that are only generated through moving up and down the y axis.
Minecraft would literately be made out of large cubes (i.e. 32*32*32 chunks maybe) made from even smaller cubes (blocks) instead of a 16*16*64 prism generated every few steps.
Do you understand? I am tired and I may be babbling.
With yMod, this should be relatively possible. I can see it happening with some alteration to the terrain generation code. It's pretty easy to generate 1024 height with yMod and if you give 100 y blocks to each layer, it should be more than enough. In fact, you could give 50 to each layer and leave about 200 for the sky, perhaps.
Maybe a SPace/Galaxi Layer? No sun, no Blue Sky, just the look into the endless depth with stars. With floating landscapes representing ateroids or planets. Maybe?
And we dont need 9 layers. 4 are already enough, dont you think?
Fairly impossible as a mod.
Notch wanted to do it himself, but the lighting engine (YES, EVEN THE NEW ONE -- IT IS JUST A CHANGE IN THE RENDERING) makes it damn-near impossible even then.
A modder would have to completely rewrite both the chunk system (to incorporate vertical chunks) AND the lighting system, so it won't explode. If you're going to do all that, you might as well just make it infinite, as he intended to anyway.

Ehhhmmm....but the ymod (almost the same as vertical chunks) already exists and its fully functional.....
The game will sure lag a lot more than now.....but, I have a 4 years old CPU and I have a minium of 40fps(when generating the map).....I dont see why you say that its "damn-near impossible" with the actual lighting engine??....
I think, the unique thing that is missing and will be hard to code......are the layers.....but everything about the extended chunks has already been done....

Does anybody remember the handheld torch that Notch couldn't do?
He's damn brilliant, and he DID build the foundation of Minecraft, but sometimes the modders can outdo him on one specific task.

In the sky layers, it is always daytime, as you are now high enough that the sun's rays can always reach you.
geometry/physics fail. day/night cycles are caused by earth's rotation, going higher won't make it infinite daylight.
If you go high enough, you reach space, where, unless another object blocks it out, the sun will not be subject to day/night cycles.
Also, I think it's funny that you decided to talk about the impossibility of infinite daylight rather than the impossibility of floating islands in the sky.
The guy who is making Minecraft Revamped is using an idea like this, but he plans on making the worlds completely infinite... maybe take some of these ideas over to him?
The Lowest Layer: There is very little other than lava down here.
So, How are we going to get around in here? If the Sub Nether is the EXACT same as the Nether Nether, then it will kill water. And I don't think Chainmail Armor or a Minecart will be able to get THAT deep. And, the diamonds will as soon as they are mined. Maybe something more valuable should be down there. Maybe or (Yes, That means Lava Diamonds) Which can mine anything supa-fast, have duoblediamond durability and Autosmelt objects it mines (If you mine Sand you would get Glass, If you mine Gold Ore you would get a Gold Ingot, etc), the sword does 6 damage and lights hit mobs on fire, and an armor can be made that is fireproof and lava resistant.

NoobButt123: "I THNK THER SHLD BE BUTTS IN MYNCRAFT."
Well, you'd have to carefully use things like gravel and sand to build passages down and then use blocks to make tunnels in the lava. Very difficult and dangerous, but very awesome.
Also, I don't really take minecraft: revamped seriously and I doubt he's going to do half the stuff he promised.
