Okay, I KNOW Hawks and falcons and Owls and Eagles aren't added yet but SOMEBODY will add them soon I'm sure and they are a very popular suggestion. Anyway, WHEN these animals are modded in, I have a plan here for an authentic Falconry sim that could be added rather easily. This will probably need to be a project.
I spent a great deal of time studying Falconry/Hawking, raising birds of prey like hawks, falcons, eagles and owls. The way you primarily train them is by putting them on a string, tied around the foot called a Jess.
The Jess could be simulated by either a fishing rod or the more likely modding the string to be usable as a leash of sorts.
Keeping the spirit of the sport, I reccomend modding the string.
You would then feed the animal treats every time it makes a kill, in this you would need to keep it on the leash, then when it makes a kill right click to reel it in and give it a treat by throwing one out of your inventory. MEAT not BREAD. In real falconry, this would go on for several weeks, in this game, the animal may need to make three successful kills on the leash before you can release it as a tamed bird.
Also, to add to the realism, hawks, falcons and owls and even EAGLES should be tamable.
Hawks are stronger than falcons, and can pick up bigger prey. Hawks can also turn faster in nature but that is not useful here. Basically, Hawks should have more durability than falcons.
Falcons fly a LOT faster than hawks, the Peregrine falcon can dive at two hundred MPH. Falcons tend to eat pigeons as a more primary food source, while hawks go for rabbits and only pigeons if land animals are not present enough to suit them.
Owls are awake at night and (Great Horned Owls) are much larger (Also a little slower than hawks) than most hawks or falcons. They tend to go for rabbits, mice, foxes depending on size. They can be more temperamental and obviously need more food.
Eagles need a LOT of food, but can fly with good power behind their wings. Eagles can catch fish and medium sized game. They fly roughly the same speed as the hawks. They prefer fish as their treats.
To make the treats, I reccomend enabling the player to craft bite size pieces of pork and fish. Hawks and falcons and the like have been trained to take down large game in the past by harrassing the animal while the hunter comes and slaughters it with a sword. I think this should be done with the aid of a new craftable item called the "Falconer's Gauntlet" which is simply a leather gauntlet that a falconer would wear to set their bird on their arm. While the glove is on, the bird can perch on you and you can right click a target to attack/hunt.
Another item that should be craftable is the Falcon's hood. This is a hood that one places on their bird that makes them stay still and perch, believing it is night allegedly. Also, a birdcage or nesting place for storage of birds. This way the player can have more than one bird.
And lastly, a whistle may be crafted to call the bird to the player, or right clicking the (Bird free) gauntlet could be made to call your bird to you.

This is a plan for a full Falconry/Hawking system that I believe would be amazing. But then again I'm an ornithologist on and off. Comments?

I CONCUR! owls are awsome it would be so cool in mine craft if you could have pet owls to kill stuff for you (follow thread mode enabled!)and there shod different types of owls barn owls spotted owls etc.
I feel like a Falconry system could add a new layer of depth to Minecraft, especially if the mod could later enable a player to have multiple birds in the air, imagine, these could be ANTI-GHAST MACHINES!

As stated, this is an authentic Falconry sim, or it will be if I can get help since at the moment I barely understand anything about programming. What I need at least I know CAN be done. That's the good news.
What needs modding.
First, a Jess is needed. That is the string/rope that goes around the foot of the bird. This should be simple, the string needs to be made to act like the fishing rod, keep the bird from going out of range, and enable reeling in the bird by rightclicking without breaking the string.
Second
This is actually the CRITICAL part.
I need a way to CREATE AND program the birds. They need to naturally hunt when untamed. Then, after three kills on the jess the birds will become tame. (Ideally they should form names over their heads that could be chosen by the player, but more likely they will be random or nameless.) The different types at first should demonstrate individual traits akin to what I have discussed earlier.
Third
These birds need to act differently when tame. Flying about in the general area until the player is attacked and then retaliating or remaining in the air untill called upon.
Fourth
Here I have a pair of options. A falconry gauntlet would be the tool used to allow a bird to perch on the player's arm. It also would allow the player to right click a target while the bird is perched and send the bird out to attack. Now, when the bird is in the air, would you call the bird to you with the right click, or would right clicking sic the bird on another enemy/switch it between attack and observation mode, or do nothing and calling the bird back would be handled with a whistle that would also need to be added in order to call the bird back? Personally, I would love to see birds controlled several at a time, so a whistle to call birds close may be best and the gauntlet would be used to change between offensive and defensive mode. If the player dies, the birds should probably return to their cages if they are placed, or go wild. Need input.
Fifth
This is simpler than the rest. Birdcages to contain the birds. Not entirely accurate since the cages may need to be bigger to be regulation, but for these purposes it should be fine.

Birdcage. This is basically a bed for birds, when in this they will automatically have falconry hoods on. However, they will need to be fed regardless and MAY need to be taken out occassionally to be happy depending on modding aid. Birds of prey eat meat, eagles especially eat fish.
Okay, INPUT!

amazed how in depth my plans have become for this. I need a couple birdbrains on this forum, nobody seems to like raising birds... :sad.gif:

Desperate for aid. Slight exaggerations of ease MAY be used to net assistance. Don't judge me! :tongue.gif:

Welllaaa i dont really seem to get the point of these creatures being added but insted of requesting a new mod why dont you request some one to change the bird textures from mo crature (which already has birds) to owls falcons etc.?

Well, the point of it is to create an authentic system of raising and training birds of prey. One COULD use the existing birds as a base, and I believe it would be very ideal to do so. The problem is I'm trying to get the birds to be incorporated as a game mechanic moreso than anything else. Having birds of prey is easy enough, but I really feel like they could have a very good role if they could be realically caught and trained. I am biased however, since I spent a few years trying to get a falconry permit before discovering the terrain here is very unideal and there are no falconers here to train me for my permit. Multiplayer could use this too one day, and I think siccing your hardearned birds on the enemy could be a great deal of fun!

I have just conceived a thought. Multiple types of ADDITIONAL birds could be added over time, for example a Phoenix in the Nether that would be a trainable enemy? Anyway it was a thought. I will keep forming this until a fellow bird nut sees it and happens to be good at modding, unlike me.

Another thought, the number of birds that could be kept would naturally be limited to the amount of meat a player would have to feed them with.
