I put together a nifty little item last night. When you use it (right click) it will make a sound and swing your arm only if there is a diamond block within ten blocks of it (even if it is behind other blocks.)
Currently you craft it simply by:
Any suggestions on the recipe? I want it to incorporate the block you are looking for. (If you construct it with a diamond, it only responds to diamond)
Should you have to use it or should it work regardless?
How should I indicate (on the icon or recipe) what kind of block its searching for?
This does require ModLoader. It should play nice with just about anything else.
My goal eventually is to give it an animation that shows an indicator of how close the nearest block is (hence the wifi like symbol, more bars = closer).
My original intention was to do a sonar type beep indicating how close the object was. I don't know if I still care enough to do that.
I added it to my minecraft.jar and the item can be crafted, however when I tested it out by placing a diamond block on the ground, the arm would only swing on the right click if I aimed my cursor on the diamond block itself.
I then placed a couple iron ore blocks next to it, and it only allowed me to swing my arm with the sonar in it, if I hit it just a tad bit on the iron ore block that butts right up next to the diamond ore block.
This was tested standing within 2 blocks away from the diamond ore block.
It shoots a line out from your character in the direction you are looking (at the + sign) for ten blocks, if it encounters a diamond, it triggers. (Even if that block is completely covered by others).
I would definetly like somthing like this but mabye with a range of 20 blocks and somthing like the bars idea i hope you decide to continue this mod :smile.gif:
Ok, so it seems to be working a bit better now with version 2.
If I do manage to point it at a diamonds somewhere behind blocks it does seem to work, however it's a bit inprecise on where exactly on the diamond block it has to be pointed at with the cursor to make it sound off.
Also, (see image below), now the item crafted in the game is no longer one large sonar item, it now consists of many smaller sonar items in one item.
I play the game using a 64x texture pack so I don't know if that is what causes this issue, I craft other customized items and they don't replicate, they all show up as one item.
I would agree with the poster above that maybe it should be increased to about 20 distance instead of 10 maybe.

Sounds like an issue with the 64x64 textures, considering there are four replications. I don't know how other custom items avoid it. I may look into it at some point.

Although X-Ray has been in my arsenal since it came out, and I gave my thoughts on how powerful it was in that thread, I've only just now tried this mod out. I really hope you decide to continue working on this, because it's more or less in line with what I was thinking: a craftable item that allows you to find what you're looking for. If you can make it with the item you want to find, that would be grand. If it is at all possible to get it working with other things you can put in the ground (for example, the Minerals mod), that would be the keenest of beans.
Edit: Perhaps, in line with the imagery of the Sonar as it is now, the recipe could be something like this:

It seems to work as I intended.

Nope, but I don't see why it wouldn't work. The onus is on the client, as long as the server allows crafting it, it should work.
