It doesn't work. It would be cool if it did, but my save files are destroyed (class files are intact, but corrupted I think) and it won't know if you are connected to a internet or not.
Someone got onto my account...
Anyways, I do need help. The instructions aren't clear enough.
The Minecraft update next week will have McRegion support, but the format is slightly different, so you'll need to unpack your save files for them to be converted correctly.
Before installing this mod, I was averagely running on fast at normal render distance, which would give me some lag now and then, But now after installing this mod, I can run at far render distance on fancy mode and only have rare, small amounts of lag.
After installing this (along with Optimine) I went down from 210 fps to aroun 30-70fps. AND I HAVE NEVER BEEN HAPPIER!!!!!!!!!! When running my game before these mods, i was getting MAJOR lag spikes EVERY time a chunk was updated. So much to the point where riding a minecart was unbearable. The only problem I had with this mod is that it no longer make MCedit work (because MCedit saves chunks in the default manner). I had to reinstall minecraft and lost all of my worlds except one. (The only one that actually mattered). I don't blame you though. I love these mods and I hope makes them default or something or other.

I start out each morning with a nice, hot cup o' Minecraft!

Try it without Optimine, Optimine usually *reduces* performance for people that were getting >100FPS.
Thank you so much! I started today out with 15 FPS fast graphics and far render, now with this and optimine installed, I have 30 FPS on Far render, and fast graphics!
I am not computer savvy, and that is never more apparant than now. I have been playing Minecraft in-browser until now, when I am playing on a laptop. It is likely this will be a main mode of use for Minecraft playing, so I'd like it to work well. Playing just tonight, I am encountering ridiculous amounts of lag on a multiplayer server, and less--but still significant--lag on singleplayer modes. I have seen this modification and looked into it in an attempt to apply it, but alas, I cannot.
You see, I have tried to download Minecraft onto this computer from Minecraft.net, however all I get is an application. There are no files located on my computer, so I can't modify it. Like I said, I know not what I do. Any help?
Q: What is the #1 cause of Minecraft lag? A: Chunk updates.
This mod optimizes how chunks are stored on the disk, meaning pauses to load or save a chunk as you move around a world become much shorter and less noticeable.
The improvement is most noticeable on systems with slow disks, such as laptops. I have also had reports that it decreases memory usage of SMP servers.
Highlights:
[*:23g6nlcx]Speed. Less jerkiness as you move around. Load, save, and delete worlds faster.
[*:23g6nlcx]Backwards compatible. Old worlds load and are converted on-the-fly to the region format.
[*:23g6nlcx]Backup friendly. The number of files decreases by 500-1000x, so compressing an entire world is much faster.
Back up your saves directory. I'm pretty sure it won't break anything, but you don't want to lose any of your work.
Instructions:
1) Locate your minecraft.jar file. On Windows, it's in %APPDATA%/.minecraft/bin
2) Create a backup of minecraft.jar
3) Open minecraft.jar in an archive editor (WinRar/7-Zip/etc) 4) Delete the META-INF folder.
5) Copy the files from the downloaded zip file into the jar file (overwriting nk.class).
6) Run Minecraft and test!
Server instructions: Do the same thing on minecraft_server.jar, but don't delete the META-INF folder, and use the mcregion server download.
To put all the old chunks into region files, do something like this:
Technical details: 90% of chunks are smaller than 4KB, and 99% are smaller than 8KB. This stores them efficiently in a single file. For a more complete description, see viewtopic.php?f=25&t=120160&p=1803041#p1803041
NOTES:
This will make a new folder "regions/" in your world directory, containing the new chunk clusters. This folder can be safely deleted if you want to revert. Any changes made to the world while using this mod will be lost, but your inventory and position will persist.
CHANGELOG:
v5 2011.01.06: Directly use Deflate streams instead of GZIP for improved speed.
v4 2011.01.02: SMP support, offline conversion utility.
v3 2010.12.30: Fix deleting worlds with regions
v2 2010.12.30:
- Fix saving and misc other bugs
- Don't use memory mapped files
- Debug output
v1 2010.12.29: First version
If you find this mod helpful, a donation towards further optimizations and my college expenses would be appreciated.
Awe-some...
Except for one thing.
You see: people like me are braindead with computers.
We have no idea how to "Open minecraft.jar in an archive editor" or know what the META-INF folder is. Maybe a video or something will help.
Submitted a patch to Scaevolus which improves load time and adds an asynchronous IO queue. The async queue adds a risk of data loss because of the way the game shuts down and is NOT INTENDED FOR SINGLE PLAYER.
Seeing as how @notch is adopting this code I will look into fixing the integration with 1.3 so that it's safe for single player.

mean? Sorry if that is a stupid question.
Somebody uninstalled the the mod without using the RegionTool to unpack their saves. That's what happens when you do that.
You do realise they are made by the same person.

To me, this mod is :Diamond:.
java -jar RegionTool.jar pack World
So my world that was almost 1,000,000 files and 2.66 GB (2,857,623,898 bytes)
went to 3.90 GB (4,194,676,736 bytes) 1,057 Files, 0 Folders
Did I do something wrong? I thought it was suppose to get very small :smile.gif:
