Any Mac friends having trouble installing forge on your minecraft_server.jar files? Check out my script that lets you do it easily with one simple click! For more info look here http://www.minecraft...-click-install/
You are WAY overcomplicating things. You can do it with zero terminal.
Download "The Unarchiver"
Find the minecraft.jar
Rightclick the minecraft.jar and select "open with "The Unarchiver"
It will create a folder called minecraft.
Move all of the mod folders into the new minecraft folder, delete META-INF
move the old .jar somewhere else as a backup.
Then rename the modified folder minecraft.jar and select use .jar in the window that pops up.
Edit:300 posts W00t!
x100....thank you...it worked :')

MY friends actually realize that real life has better graphics than any game, and that gameplay is infinitely better. Thus they all play Minecraft.
no mater what mod i instal it gets to the home screen like the start up logo and then crashes no mater what mod or how i do it
i am on the latest minecraft and the latest java and even the latest mac software so no probe there help!!!!! plz i want mods i had them on 1.2.6 but cant get them now
you're a victim of non-updated mods. the game has changed, that one line of code the mod you love was looking for has moved (terrible analogy, but my point might be clear?) simply put, if the mod you want to load isn't compatible with the latest version of the game, be patient, the update will come...

I've been experiencing the same problem. I'm running OS 10.6.5 and have the lastest version of java and MC.
The mods that I have gotten to work are Simple Maps, AO (Better Light) and Better Grass (I'm also using the Faithful 32 x 32 texture pack). I have tried using Modloader through mincrafter but I get stuck on the Mojang Specification Logo.
It seems as though mods that require ModLoader Don't work for me.
Help would be much appreciated.

as I see it, mods in minecraft are horrendously messy, and any attempt to put more than 2 or 3 mods into the game is met with the "black screen" and/or CTD almost immediately. mod support is NEEDED! oh well, i'll be happy with the few i have. hopefully we don't have a crippling update soon.

DISCLAIMER: Don't blame me if you lose your saved worlds, I am warning you now, they will be gone. Also, it is very hard to give technical advice to someone's game when you don't know what sort of modifications they have done in the past. The only way I know to give 100% advice is to a brand new installation of the beta game (that is the way I do my tutorials and add my mods). If you have worlds you have been working on for weeks or months, don't follow this tutorial. Backing up your worlds is beyond the scope of this message and you should look elsewhere. The main purpose of this post is to help people that have been trying various methods to get mods to work and have maybe done a mish-mash of their .jar files, which no longer allow them to even run the game without any mods.
You guys that are getting the black screens, are you using a brand new version of Minecraft downloaded from the website? Have you previously tried running patchers or un-archiving your minecraft.jars and could possibly have made an error when zipping or compressing it back up?
The very first step to ensure that ANY mod will work is to work with a clean slate.
PEOPLE WITH SAVED WORLDS AND THINGS YOU DON'T WANT TO LOSE - DO NOT FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS, EVERYTHING WILL BE GONE!!!!
Otherwise, if you are ready to start with a clean slate do this:
go into your ~user/library/application support/ folder and drag your /minecraft/ folder into the trash.
THIS WILL DELETE ALL OF YOUR MINECRAFT JAR FILES AND SAVED WORLDS!!!
Now, log into the minecraft website and download a *NEW* Minecraft.zip file.
Unzip it and Drag the Minecraft icon to your APPLICATIONS folder.
If you get a message saying that "minecraft already exists, do you want to overwrite" select yes.
If you installed minecraft into its own sub-folder (like in my tutorial) drag your newly unzipped minecraft into applications/minecraft/ and then select "yes" to overwrite.
Run the Minecraft application - If done correctly your User Name and Password will be blank. If they are not blank, then you did not flush out your old minecraft already installed on your system.
Log in with user and pass and then get to the main title screen, then close the program.
You should now have BRAND NEW "~user/library/application support/minecraft" files.
I am pretty certain that you should be able to add mods now if you do one at a time and follow the instructions.
Hope this helps you!!
Edit: some grammar

Someone else with more knowledge of these errors can correct me if i am wrong, but I believe this is telling you which files are either corrupted, changed, or causing errors with the program that no longer allow Minecraft to function in a normal way.

Cool, I am glad that worked out for you. The main reason I like to make sure everything is cleared out is because someone could have a corrupted save file that could be causing an issue. No use in re-doing 95% of the install if the problem is in the last 5%!
On the other hand I guess you could just drag your saves to the desktop, then re-do everything and when it is all back up and running just drag the saves back into the MC folder.

Okay Mac guys.
If you're running snow leopard, heres you're tut-
First, download the mod.
Read the instructions, i.e where to place everything.
Go to /Library/ Application Support/minecraft
open up the bin.
right clock minecraft.jar and open with you're unarchiver of choice.
place any of the class files in there, as directed by the mod's instructions.
delete the folder META-INF
press command+a, right click any file, and press compress.
find the new file, Archive.zip
right click and cut.
paste it in the bin
save minecraft.jar somewhere safe.
rename archive.zip minecraft.jar When prompted, click use .jar.
if you need to place any files in the resources, do it. (it will say in the mod instructions)
Open minecraft and play. remember to backup saves and all, just in case.
I you get a black screen, go the back into the minecraft folder and delete the file "version". This will download a clean minecraft.jar when you play.
Any question, feel free to PM/comment
