Alright. I've been playing with the textures in minecraft for some time now, and when I heard about the upcoming contest, I decided to do a full pack.
I believe a defining feature of Minecraft is simplicity.
With that in mind, I attempted to draw every tile with only
4 colors, in a fashion similar to NES games. It was quite
challenging, and I hope you enjoy the results.
In rare cases items have only had their colors reduced,
when I felt the original picture was the best use of space
(eg: string). I tried to avoid this in general. The Zombie
Pigman was not altered due to it's complexity, range of
colors, and it's unsure future in the game. Likewise,
objects that don't appear in the game, such as chainmail and
sponge, were not altered.
Got to try it out myself. The appearance is an awesome reminder of the time I spent plunking away at my Super Game Boy(SNES). My only complaint is that stone looks rather ugly. Maybe a gray base instead of a red one?
This looks very good and kind of retro! =) I'm gonna download this :tongue.gif:
EDIT: is this 32x32? cause my minecraft crashes when i use this.
It shouldn't be crashing - let me try the zip in the dl...
Edit: I works fine for me off of the Download. Are you trying to place the folders in the .jar, or putting the zip in the texture pack folder?

I want it to look like iron rich granite, similar to the stone you see around central and south america, and the fertile crescent. I like the way dark reddy brown stone looks, but if there's a big demand I can make an alternative color pack; I would have to change all the ore blocks and the furnace.
Interesting pack, I wasn't sure about the color scheme for smooth stone at first, but it really does look nice along the hillsides, nice job on the items too. I also think the trees look great, really impressive for 4-bit. :biggrin.gif:
edit: Only thing I noticed out of place is the mossy stone, it normally has a cobble stone backdrop, not smooth stone.
edit again: Also, your Nether textures are most awesome.
My Nether portal pyramid now looks much more foreboding with your smooth stone texture too.
Here's another screenshot to contrast the hellish ones. With the better light and wild grass mods, btw.
After playing around with your pack some more I have some feedback for ya.
I personally found tree leaves to be far too dark, as such they don't blend with with the rest of the terrain. I also found dirt and stone/cobblestone similar in color, which is not much of a problem in bright light but more so in dark tunnels; so you might want to work on improving the readability of them.

Friend, this is some hardcore Original-Zelda-Stylez texturing you've got here. I LOVE it. Gonna check it out close-up and see if I can offer any feedback.
I love the overall feel of the thing. It's like the ******* love-child of Gameboy and MS Paint. You've done a good job translating the blocks over to 4-bittery, and I can tell what everything is just fine.
I think that, as with any super-low-res graphics pack, it gets hard to differentiate between a few things at a glance, and I know I had to really watch to get around my caves (Which tend to be narrow, spindly things to start).
All in all, I'd call this a great success, but it's a bit too simple for me to want to play it. I get caught up in making 16x textures look as flowy as I can, and all I wanna do is go in and shade this one. :tongue.gif:
Thanks for the feedback so far, everyone! I'm planning to do some fixes and tweak some colors, and I'll release a pack update when the next new item/block/mob is added. I hope to address everyone's criticism with it. After doing a lot of testing with the pack (I play the game with it over default - narcissistic no? :wink.gif:, I was pretty happy with the way things looked underground, I tried to transition the colors like so: rock->dirt->cobble, and made the cobble noticeably lighter so you could tell it's unnatural. The better light mod does make it darker (and I realize most people use it), so I'll at least look into it.
Right now I'm taking a break from working on the pack as I'm trying to learn java with online tutorials (a nightmare). I'll try and release an update shortly after notch's primemas update

Download the .zip here!
Some screens (slightly out of date; sand is softer, and the target reticule is different):

After counting the pixels it looks 16x16

Keep it up, though. It's a fantastic pack.
