Features:
-Configurable hotkey to toggle information display on/off
-Choose which information to display via a configuration file
-Display absolute speed normalized so that 1.0 is maximum walking speed
-Display normalized ground speed
-Displays speed along each axis as well as which direction you're traveling in on that axis
-Displays the stored momentum of the minecart you're riding
-See your X/Y/Z position in the game
-See your player's rotation (0 = North)
-Configurable hotkeys to speed up and slow down the minecart you're traveling in
-Does not change gameplay in any way while the display is off
Installation Instructions:
1. Download and install 303's Mod Loader HERE.
2. Download SpeedTest using the link above.
3. Backup your minecraft.jar. To find your minecraft.bin open Windows Explorer and type the following into the address bar: %appdata%\.minecraft\bin
4. Using 7zip, WinRAR, or the archiver of your choice, open minecraft.jar (no need to unpack/decrompress) and drag the mod_SpeedTest.class from the download zip into your minecraft.jar.
5. Delete the META-INF folder in minecraft.jar. You should have done this already when installing 303's Mod Loader.
6. [OPTIONAL] Create a text file named SpeedTest.properties in %appdata%\.minecraft\mods\SpeedTest\ Use this file to modify the hotkeys and display properties. You can copy and paste these defaults into the file and change them as you please:
SpeedUp = W
SlowDown = S
Display = R
ShowSpeed = Yes
ShowGroundSpeed = Yes
ShowMomentum = Yes
ShowAxisSpeed = Yes
ShowPosition = Yes
ShowRotation = Yes
7. Play!
Usage:
-Press the "Display" key (Default: R) to enable the on screen information display.
-While riding a cart press the key bound to "SpeedUp" (Default: W) to increase your cart's speed by 25%. Press "SpeedDown" (Default: D) to decrease your cart's speed by 25%. The on screen display must be turned on for this to work. Pressing either key in a stopped cart does nothing. These keys should also work on a boat and anything else the player can ride.
Description:
I made this after playing with Minecart Mania and wishing there was a way to see my minecart's current speed and momentum. It's great for determining where to place boosters and taking a closer look at minecart physics.
The speed readouts are normalized so that 1.0 is your normal walking speed. This means that a minecart at max speed is roughly 3.39x as fast as walking.
Whenever a minecart gains speed, either through collision, a booster, or a mod, the game adds the gained speed to a speed variable. When the speed reaches a certain point it will no longer travel any faster. However, that speed variable will keep increasing. When a cart is slowed due to friction, collision, Minecart Mania's brakes, etc, that speed is deducted from the speed variable even if it exceeds the top speed. This means a cart basically gains momentum or stored energy once it passes top speed. The momentum readout will tell you how much of this momentum you have. Don't be surprised to see large numbers; speed gains and losses are multiplicative.
I made this for my own sake and thought I'd release it just in case anyone else might find it handy. If anyone has any ideas for more useful information to display, reply to the thread.

12/01 00:51 - I'm a moron and broke both my download links before. Fixed.
11/29 18:47 - Added source link.
I posted the source next to the download link above. It's commented and shows examples of using keybinds, loading options from a config file, and displaying a message on the screen. Thanks for all three of those examples goes to 303.
