I wanted to try to make a texture pack for Minecraft and after giving up on my first idea due to biomes I've created something a little different. The following is a preview of my attempt to give Minecraft a Dwarf Fortress style spin. I'm having some trouble finding a balance between accuracy to DF and playable graphics but I think it looks good so far. There's a lot of choices to be made for style because of how each game displays blocks. For example the dirt, stone and log textures were all solid colours at one point but I added some highlights to them to add some texture hopefully without breaking away from the original style.
Can't forget the all important map view:
Any feedback is appreciated. Once I get a little further along with the changes I want to make I'll share the texture pack with everyone.
I've tried using the full characters for some tiles where it only has the one version. Things like ore, ladders and redstone are direct versions of the tile set in DF. Here's an example of me finding iron:
The problem comes with the stone, dirt and grass. Generally those have a different appearance in on the same level or on the level above. The also have varying tiles that are shown. I tried mimicking that somewhat by placing several grass tiles on one block. I went with the grid look on stuff like stone and dirt as well since the tiles are normally too simple to give an texture to the blocks. Originally the trees were just all one colour to match DF logs. I'm going to play around with some options and see what people like.
Here's a fresh set of images from what I've been working on tonight. First off, I've been playing around with the stone and dirt textures a bit.
or
Not sure which one I prefer. Think about trying a brown on black texture for the dirt but I find the contrast is what makes the green on black grass look cool. Here's a few more shots of things I've been adding.
Furrowed grounds and moist soil.
Shrubs and wild plants.
Some chest variations.
Examples of some ores underground.
Redstone powder and torches; off and on.
Love to hear what everyone else think of the dirt option. I feel like I'll need to branch this into a couple of texture sets. One for the default colour and black background and one with more creative use of colour but less accurate.
More work done! Thanks for the feedback mikenter. I'm fairly close to being done with terrain. There's only a few blocks that I haven't figured out what to do with yet; glass, TNT, brick, music box. I also need to work on the Nether blocks since I haven't been down there yet. Anyways here's some of the new stuff.
Craftbench
Rails
Furnaces and big chest
Cloth and small chest
I'm having a weird problem with my colour palette that's making it hard to keep the colours consistent. Every time I use the eyedropper it ends up picking up a simalar colour but not quite the same. It's getting really frustrating. Still, I'm enjoying working on this a lot and I hope a few people are looking forward to using this. :smile.gif:
I shall be leashing it, and taking it for a walk across someone's crops. If they glassed the top, I shall destroy, and then walk.
By day, innocent Cobblestone manufacturer. By night, malicious pig-walker.
Well I'm almost ready to release this. I've started to experiment with some of the other texture files that I can replace. All of the blocks are done. There's a few I'm thinking about modifying; the craftbench isn't quite where I want it. I'm also going to rework some of the colours as it didn't remain as consistent as I had hoped.

Once I've cleaned up a few works in progress I'll upload the first version for everyone to try out. I'm looking forward to some more feedback :smile.gif:
Wow. This is really fantastic work! I personally love Dwarf Fortress and have had much Fun with it. From the looks of this your texture pack will probably become a staple of my Minecrafts.
Thanks for the kind words. You motivated me to push to get it uploaded sometime tonight. Here's a picture of the new sun I made to tide you over. Thank god Toady added that new clock to adventure mode so I could figure out what it looks like. :biggrin.gif:
Hey again. It's that time already. Here is the first version of my Minecraft Dwarf Fortress texture pack. It's not supposed to be entirely accurate to the game but I tried to keep it consistent where I could. I hope everyone enjoys playing with it as I enjoyed working on it.
I still have a lot planned for this pack but terrain textures are 90% complete. I still need to come up with an idea for the bookcase and the wheat. I also noticed I had forgotten about glass since I don't use it very often. My next version will probably feature more on the items, gui and delve a little deeper into mob textures.
Speaking of which, there is a bit of a surprise in this upload. I'll let everyone figure it out but it's a style I'm experimenting with and it's scared me beyond belief twice already. :biggrin.gif:
@EDIBLE - Hehe I thought of that too especially with water counting down 7 layers. I tried modifying the water texture in my terrain.png but nothing ended up happening in game. Not sure if water can be modified right now.
@Khift - Try playing the pack. Maybe I already have... :biggrin.gif:
I'm probably going to work on the remaining texture squares soon before moving on to a complete overhaul of the mobs and items. Already have some good ideas for the UI files.
I love it! I read your thread on the Bay12 forums, and your link took me right back to my home forum; how nice!
You should make the lava an ASCII character, too. I wouldn't even care that it couldn't be animated. I have a dwarf skin, too, so I think I'll have quite a time with this!
Hmm, that's a good idea. I'll look into how Dwarf Fortress represents the moisture vs temperature curve and see if I can combine the two into something that looks good. The new cloth blocks gave me a little more work to do. :smile.gif:

I personally like this one more.
This pack is looking to shape up into something really awesome so I need to post to stay in tune with it :biggrin.gif:

I'm looking forward to this, I love dwarf fort but it's been awhile since I played it.

It'd be pretty funny if you could have magma and water show numbers from 1-7.
It's legally required. The FBI will show up if you don't. You've been warned.
