Finally updated for 1.2_02! There's an additional step in the installation, though, because Notch is a jerk who hates good-looking games. The default terrain.png no longer includes the relevant textures, but fortunately for you, I've uploaded them:
If you want to use this mod with the default texture pack, you will need to extract terrain.png from minecraft.jar, copy that image into the blank space beneath the ore block tiles, and then put it back into minecraft.jar.
Most other texture packs (and certainly any texture pack worth using!) includes side and bottom textures already; if it doesn't (or if you use the default textures without completing the above step) you will see pink squares on the sides and bottom of your ore blocks, and should go smack the pack creator around the face for cutting corners. Download!
Install like any other mod. Open minecraft.jar with a program that supports .7z, delete the META-INF folder, and replace the relevant class files with the ones in the download.
Yah notch screwed up when he updated and took the pretty out of the gem blocks. Unless he is going to make a "decor block, or Smelted block" that will have different preferably tougher qualities about it.

You can go ahead and move at the speed of light, But i will move at the speed of darkness.
I am sad because when I try and use this mod I just get a black screen when I load up Minecraft =(
I blame Windows Vista!
I followed your instructions exactly (I've never bothered with any mods before except this one). I opened up the minecraft.jar, deleted the Meta-INF folder, then dropped in the new e.class

This hasn't been updated to the new patch, I think.
The reason it hasn't been updated is because nobody has posted an updated obfuscation map. The one I found that claimed to work with 1.2.3_04 was only up-to-date as of _03.
That's because there wasn't really any changes in SSP's code. _04 is pretty much the same thing as _03. So if it says it's updated to _03, it will work with _04.
Oh, okay then. I was just going off of what I understood. I'll believe you if you say it's not working, since I really have no clue.
To be fair, I'm only going off of what I understand myself. I'm not a programmer. I restarted it from scratch just now, starting with the class file from 1.2.3_04 to be safe, and I managed to get a version that doesn't crash, but the textures aren't working. I don't have a clue why it doesn't work anymore. My honest best guess is that Notch hates me.
It's not that Notch hates any of us. He doesn't even choose what gets obfsucated into what. He mearly makes the code, then reuns it through an obfsucator.
If your having trouble getting it to work, I'd go ask Risugami, 303, or Ayutashi for help. They seem to be pretty good at modding. If not them then try Shockah, KingBDogz, or ScottyDoesKnow, since those three have plenty of mods that do some complex things.

good job!
Very good work. i thought this was gone forever
i will download this now, and you shall take this:
This will be very useful to me. Are you aware of any conflicts with any other mods? Namely, the 'ambient occlusion' and 'minimap' mods by MrMessiah.
Many thanks indeed.
As long as it doesn't involve e.class, there should be no problems.
