Added a minor update. Changed the middle block to netherstone.
The mod seems to be broken. If you can fix it for me it would be greatly appreciated. I am a extreme noob at java. (C++ is mah thang) [Source Code] - Most recent source available
Requirements:
- ModLoader (Risugami's Mod Loader 4 / Download Page)
- Basic knowledge on how to install addons/mods.
- DELETE THE META-INF FOLDER IN YOUR MINECRAFT.JAR!
Recipe:
It may be to easy, but if you have a suggestion for a better recipe, that isn't too hard; let me see it!

I have stopped releasing the source code, but you can use this as some sort of a starting.

Me - Staring at code for 10 minutes and then I found out what to do.
This is my first mod. I'm a beginner at java, a lot of it was confusing, but it came out right.
But it looks a little too easy. I'd make it flint and coal instead since flint is less common than gravel, and coal is the standin for charcoal in real black powder.
I think a great addition would be to cook wood blocks to make coal (you cook wood to make charcoal, so it makes sense).
That would eliminate the crazy mad rush to find coal first, you'd have more options.
Thanks peekpeekpeekpeek, I will look into that, and I have no knowledge about the furnace. For now, I added a netherstone block to the middle to make the process a tad more difficult.
There are two different deterrents, cost vs difficulty.
Cost is value of the item used in a craft. How many does it take, how rare is the item.
So using Flint or Coal is more expensive than sand and gravel.
Difficulty is how many steps were required before you could obtain an item. For instance gunpowder to a beginning player is very difficult to obtain because it requires killing mobs. I think the point of "easy" gunpowder it to make it feasible to use TNT without building an elaborate mob trap, but not so easy as to make it as common as dirt.
I think requiring anything from Nether is too difficult. A good idea would be to use Red Dust since a large number of players find it nearly useless otherwise. Maybe combine Red Dust and Coal to make gunpowder?

I added a couple more crafting recipes. The easier method you use, the less gunpowder you receive.
Zombie pigmen will organize into well-coordinated search and destroy teams with weapons open, and creepers will develop the ability to determine certain eigenvalues of the voxel-based matrix that is the minecraft world.
Is it possible to have a version with only the flint and coal recipe? It's the most logical to me, and i don't really want the others. Thanks for working on this anyhow

Why were you getting your hopes up? Set a low bar, and you won't be disappointed.

**** THE PEOPLE WHO INVENTED OBFUSCATION. **** THEM WITH KNIVES.
like making TNT, but gunpowder.
Also, the idea is gunpower is a fine dust, but it is flammable like coal, so obvious choice is +
but making it a larger recipe means its still not easy to obtain.

maybe add one flint in the center.

= 16 Gunpowder
= sulfur (lightstone dust)
= charcoal
= closest in game representation I could find to potassium nitrate via oversimplified potash
I also use:
= 4 Gunpowder
In which case magical redstone pixie dust is used as an oxidizer instead of make-believe sulfur, resulting in a reduced explosive effect.
I find this provides a good balance between opportunity cost and availability, while not being grossly overpowered. Hope it helps
