Apparently a mod giving the user the ability to do what they wish with all of the recipies was considered too powerfull.
What I don't get though is why bother deleting the topic? Then everyone wonders what the heck happened. Why not just lock it leaving a message at the end saying that the mod overstepped what mods are allowed to do, and was shut down? That way people know just WTF happened.
If your going to allow modifications, you should allow mods in any area the people wish... Just as long as it doesn't harm the user or the user's computer. ( don't know how it really could harm the user themself but hey what evs)
It seems to me that everything here is just conjecture.

All game-play/class file(minecraft.jar only) changing mods are illegal. Threads will be deleted if found. That is what happened.
Do we have any references saying that all threads for mods which change the minecraft.jar file will be deleted? I'm pretty sure we don't. If that were the case, then about a quarter to half of the threads on the first page of this section would cease to exist. In his blog, he states that they are very gray area legally, not outright illegal, but not outright legal at the same time. Gray. Neutral. He says he frowns on them as well in the blog, but doesn't say why. He goes into more detail when asked about it on Twitter with the reasoning pretty much being that they modify the game in an unsupported way and because they break with updates. (Gotten from this thread: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=49256) I really don't think that Notch would squash creativity like this in a game about creativity just because he's uneasy about the means of modding the game.

Again, do we have a reference for this? I looked around and didn't find anything by either a mod or the mod's creator stating anything about the thread removal, but I could have missed it. If so, a link would be nice to avoid any conjecture and needless blaming and finger pointing. Until we get the official word from somebody, I have to say that it's all just conjecture.

It's still heinous to disallow content mods, fixes, and balancing in a game that's already content starved, broken, and horrendously unbalanced.
Content starved, broken, and horrendously unbalanced? You are aware that the game is currently in the alpha stage, and as such is still under a good deal of development, yes? Personally, I don't feel that it's any of these things, but you're entitled to your opinion. While I do agree with you that it's terrible to disallow a mod because of something that it introduces to the game, I still maintain that we don't know for a fact yet that is what happened.
Sorry if I come off as a jerk in this at all. It's almost five in the morning and I'm trying to stay awake while constantly checking my email to make sure I don't miss any messages from my teacher about my final class assignment. Well, not miss. More like literally trying to stay right on top of my work.
That post was more of a theory than fact. Though being able to manipulate how much of something spawns and how often, might be seen as less of a power, when being able to control the recipies, can result in one coal being crafted into one hundred diamonds, or some similar recipie.
If you want proof that the topic was deleted, go to OSMS, (link in my sig), go to my second post, which is now an archive for past mods. Just look for the link called "Custom Crafting Recipies". I didn't change it when I moved it from the first post to the second, but it gave me the same message someone else said they got trying to use any of the links to the thread.
no, the mod literally named CustomCraftingRecipes. I think it was deleted becuase the name of the thread had the word 'hack' in it, so they deleted it. changing 'hack' to 'mod' wouldve saved the thread. stupid mods going 'herp da derp it says hack in teh name -clicks delete button- herpaderp'
