For those of you familiar with Larry Niven's Ringworld or Microsoft's Halo, you will know what I'm talking about. Is there a way to make a continuous sun & moon to simulate the look of a Ringworld? The Minecraft terrain obviously isn't a ring but that's not what I'm asking for. Also, if you are familiar with the size of the Ringworld in Niven's novel, you will understand that the surface area of terrain is larger than anything Minecraft can generate:
"Ringworld has a habitable flat inner surface equivalent in area to approximately three million Earth-sized planets.
I state this because I know there are those bound to question the idea: "Minecraft is flat, bro. It's not a ring."
Okay yeah it's flat, but Ringworld is huge enough that you wouldn't notice anything wrong with the environment if Minecraft were to be set on it. The only thing that would let you know you were even on a Ringworld, and not a planet is that big thing in the sky.
I'm not familiar with changing or editing pictures for the game, but maybe someone can take up the project?
edit:
Now that I think about it I don't think it would be possible but some input would still be nice. :sad.gif:
Yea I was thinking of this too! i think it would be possible just would involve a little more than just the sun/moon images.
The stars in the sky should still rotate, but there should also be a static "Arch" image that would be more visible at night. This would also include the sun since it doesn't move on a ring world.
You'd have to make shadow squares that move across the sun and cause day/night. Maybe they are like "clouds" but higher up. Also shadow squares that move around the Arch.
Someone should definately get working on this. I think in order for this mod to really work you'd want to make the land a lot shallower, have a lot more bedrock (Scrith), and place some ruins around (that's where you'd get most of your minerals from).
this could be done easily with just a simple texture mod, the moon could be replaced with one of the shadow sqaures and increased in size, and theres got to be a way to edit the sky box to have the arch in the backround, and if the shadow square is big enough the missing sun shouldnt be noticable.
That's hilarious to think of MC as a part of ring-world.
It would be impossible to make a good looking ringworld background as a sun/moon texture edit because of their flat nature. The only way to do it would be to alter the skybox that contains the stars, and even that might not make it curve correctly. Heck, I don't even know if anyone has managed to change the stars period.
You'll need to get a modder to do this, because a straight up texture artist probably won't be able to. Good luck.

Ya I'm familiar with Ringworld, and I think Halo is a rip-off of it. I dunno how the current day/night system works, but I think it should be possible, for Notch or an expert modder, to do it. I think that not only can it be done, the shadow squares can be made to look like the real things with simple sprites, since the scales of the thing make it an abstraction to the eye anyway.
As for the arch, you could line it north/south and call north Spinward, and have it be a skybox, a high resolution skybox to make it look as if the world was actually curving upward, blocks and all. It would make since, the bedrock/adminium layer could have a texture change to the sleek grey slightly translucent look of scrith, and the void could be thought of as space. I guess the spongy layer on the underside would be something to question about, except in newly generated worlds where there is no hole in the bedrock.
If only I knew how to mod I might make the attempt. Normally I try to avoid mods, but this particular mod is well worth an exception :biggrin.gif:
If someone creates this Mod I totally want in, from the beginning of me playing this I thought, wouldn't it be awesome to set this on a ringworld or a dyson sphere.
sorry to burst all your bubbles but the idea of a skybox wouldnt work because the sky itself is hardcoded meaning there is a bit of code somewhere saying 'make sky blue' so there isnt a changeable picture. the stars are also hardcoded but the only idea i can think of is make the sun a picture of the ringworld in shadow and the moon a picture of the ringworld in sun light. this still wouldnt work because you would have to resize the sun and moon to link up...which is hardcoded
Too bad this thread is so old... maybe things have changed by now?
A Ringworld sky would be such a kick!
What about changing the time settings using commands? Like, time frozen at high noon for half the day, then at midnight for the rest? With that and the right skybox modded texture, it might work. Any modders interested in a challenge?

Looks like it's your lucky day (although 6 and a bit years late). Someone is working on a ring world skybox: https://www.reddit.com/r/Minecraft/comments/5p7y20/wip_3d_ring_world_skybox/
Too many hours in this game, I tell ya.
someone doesnt know about optifine or mods.
