I've downloaded the patcher, ran it exactly as instructed. Now when I start up my world, it looks exactly the same. No minimap, grass looks normal, same chunky light. What am I doing wrong?
You did check the checkboxes? If yes, could you post the patchlog?

Not working atm, and will not get updated in the near future, sorry.
Please include a description of the mod in the first post and move the changelog to the bottom. I didn't use this mod for a long time due to this. Changelog at the bottom too, it's good practice.
I was trying to decide this last night. You've convinced me. Moving it to the bottom.
(You may have noticed I'm trying to improve the OP a bit because this has kind of taken off a bit the last couple of weeks)
Light-emitting blocks are far too dark with BetterLight. I've also noticed a very visible difference in overall brightness of the light that torches and other blocks give off, BetterLight being quite a bit darker.
Please increase the brightness of the light sources (INCLUDING their source), or allow us to install either AO or BL.
Yeah, it's kinda even more dark now, and it halves my framerate to ~15, but it looks great! :tongue.gif:
Haha "this sucks. It sucks SO GOOD" ;p The darkness is pretty extreme, with the old AO it was based around a dimming level of 10% per occluding block, this is more like 50% per occluding block which is damn close to my ridiculous "ramp everything up as high as it will go" testing levels. It will be toned down though.
Last night I finished chopping the new renderer around so that I can add in changes easier and selectively turn bits of it on or off. Its looking like BetterGrass won't require BetterLight next release. (It'll still use the new renderer, just not all the BetterLight stuff will be turned on unless you ask for it).
Hit a little snag with one of the things I wanted to do for the next release, so I'm going to need to think about it some more. One of the big optimisations is not as straightforward as I thought it would be, but its The Right Thing to do, so I'll just have to work through it. Still looking at a release this week.
Awesome mod here. Can you see what you can do about performance. Minecraft normally runs great. I am on a high end system Core i7 OC 3.4Ghz, Nvidia GTX 275, 12 GB RAM. This lighting mod, while it looks awesome, introduces a lot of jittering in the framerate while walking around and the game is loading/rendering new geometry. Meaning it doesn't feel smooth anymore. Its not so bad that I need to turn the mod off, but its still annoying.
since i dont think i have posted here and i have been using this alot, thought i would say it is a very awesome mod. with the capabilities of better light are you looking at other graphical enhancements too?
Actually, while I'm here, I'd like to ask if a few things are possible, and how hard they would be:
Would it be possible for you to...
- Add a shine to water and certain materials like gold blocks and glass? (mipmaps, maybe)
- Create a fix for biome weather? (falling snow in snow areas, ect)
- Talk with the guy who made the Handheld Torchlight and get it incorporated into BetterLight?
Mr M how complex would it be to add fade in / fade out to changing light levels? If it doesn't cost too much performance, it would make sunrise/sunset, placing torches and handheld torches look a lot better
I love it. I used AO when I saw it in a let's play on YouTube, and I loved that; that same person updated in one of his videos that AO has been updated, I saw what it did, and I had to have it.
That being said, I agree with other people here on it being darker. I can live with that though as I usually play at night, so I can see everything fine anyhow. Only thing left is to make water tiles look just as sexy as the rest of them. (Maybe it's just me, but water tiles still look like the normal ones with the square lighting effects.) Not sure if it's something that can be fixed or not (or if it's anyone but me noticing that) but I thought it'd be worth it to throw it out there.
@Hiro: I'm not sure if that will happen, seeing as MrM's Mods have only been cosmetic changes so far. I don't know all that much, but I'm fairly certain you'd lose MP compatibility too.

Huh? I'm on a pretty low end system (1.86Ghz Core 2, ATI HD 4550), and I got ~25fps with BetterLight on, default resolution. If you're having performance problems with that, then there's more to it than the mod. There's definitely an FPS drop, though.

I ended up in this thread looking for the genius grass change. Am I right in understanding that one can't implement that without using some of these other things as well? I like minecraft's current lighting (mostly because I've learned how to recognize how dark a cave needs to be for monster spawns).
Lots of responses again, sorry if I miss your question
Performance/too dark - yep, fixes really really coming soon, promise. MASSIVE slowdown when the mod's enabled? Make sure you have "limit framerate" turned on in Minecraft options. Counterintuitive I know, but it absolutely EATS CPU time if you don't have this turned on. BetterGrass requires BetterLight - fixed already in my dev build Smoothifying day/night changes - no time soon, if at all. Not 100% sure I could stop it happening the way it currently does even if I wanted to. I agree it does look a bit incongruous with light smoothing on :sad.gif: Shiny water/metals/other enhancements - yes! I've wanted to do this for a while but never got round to it. Once I have betterlight kinda stable and performing well I will revisit this. I also want to do mipping on textures as well. Lots of textury stuff I want to hit. I *think* it's all possible, but sometimes these things turn out not to be. Handheld torch - that guy beat me to it, it was one of my "to do" things. :smile.gif: I think I have an idea for a possible improvement though... Biome weather - Wontfix. Just because, I'm sure Notch already has that lined up and I don't want to invest time in something that's going to appear down the line anyway.
Hey, I've only skimmed the thread so far, but after applying the new BetterLight stuff my Minecraft crashes after random times (like 5 seconds to 5+ minutes). When I check processes the memory is through the roof. I guess theres some kind of memory leak. I also got this problem when I'd use the BiomeTerrain mod along with your AO stuff. Do you know of a way to fix this?
In the meantime, is Handheld Torchlight mod compatible with MrMmods ?
Someone posted a youtube video of the two working together on Reddit, but I don't know if they did that the legit way or by hacking the two together. I think they should work together though, if it doesn't replace bk.class (RenderBlock in the MCP I think) it should work with BetterLight
When I try to install this the patcher stops at 7% and the log says 8 more... and stays there. The "readme" says that it now works with 1.2.2 si I presumed it would work for me too since I have 1.2.5. Is it a 1.2.6 version only now?
As far as I know, each patcher is made to work on a specific version of minecraft only. Update your minecraft (should happen automatically) and then apply the patch.

Yeah, don't get used to that, thats getting squished next release.
