In other news, this has taken a little while longer than I thought, but will have something out in the next few hours. xau's patcher is very exciting.
Yah, I've put off learning java for years... now there's a legitimate reason I might want to learn it... still fighting with myself over it. Between Xau's patcher and some ideas I've had... I've actually wanted to start learning it even though as a general rule i'm not fond of how java does classes and syntax/naming (old school c/perl programmer and shell scripter by trade.)
OK, OP updated with the new version and the instructions. Hopefully everything works, as this is my first time futzing with the patcher. Let me know if you get problems. I STRONGLY ADVISE BACKING UP BEFORE YOU USE THIS.
Also, hopefully nobody is too disappointed to see some of the bells and whistles disappear - they will be back once I know I'm doing the rest of this right.

What should I back up? All my Minecraft files or solely my saves?
Just minecraft.jar under the bin directory. Technically the patcher saves a version but I can't be sure I didn't mess it up somehow.
EDIT: Disregard this, figured it out. I had forgotten about the properties file. No errors for now, thanks for this great mod MrMessiah!
I figured out creating the mods/SimpleMap folder myself, and placing the overlay.png and mmcolors.png there. However, I still get this weird text at the top:
For a horrible moment there I thought I put the wrong version of the mod in the patcher. Er, dunno. Really wierd. Something's going wrong when it starts up, but it's clearly working as it has colour in the map and the overlay's loaded. What it's printing there is the path to where the graphic files are. Why it's printing that, I don't know. What do you get when you turn showCoords on?
I had the mods/Simplemap folder in the .minecraft folder.
But overall, I raged, backed up and using the .07 version, since it still has the press M to get rid of it.
Major problem: this is not compatible with the HD Texture Fix!
It won't work if run after the HD texture fix, but if you run this first the HD texture fix will patch over this one without problems.
I can also confirm this definitely works in linux.
Cheers
I still can't get it to work. When I patch over with the HD Texture Fix, suddenly the BetterGrass and Simplemap disappears.
That is because you are starting over with the original again when you run the HD texture patch - copy the simplemap-patched jar file and run the HD patch on that one.
I'm having an issue, I was also having it with Zaneris' version so hopefully I can get this resolved. After installation, I click "Login" and then the window just goes black and that's the end of it. What I have tried is reinstalling/redownloading minecraft, the minimap mod and neither have worked. I have even tried getting a minecraft.jar with the mod installed correctly and functioning from a someone else and still no luck. I also ensured that the META-INF folder is deleted.
But from the instructions i have a question: Is there any way for me to just copy the files onto my .jar file so that i don't have to reinstall my texture pack/mods when i install it?
To those having problems with this and HQ textures or other texture packs I think the problem is that when you run mine you're applying the mod to the wrong jar file and thats why those mods disappear afterwards.
When you run my patcher you have to select minecraft.jar in the top box, and it will ask you whether to overwrite minecraft.original.jar. If you say yes here, mine will install OK.

That's the same error I got, if you already patched it with the HD fix start over;
-original .jar
-patch with Simple map
-patch with HD fix
-play
(yes, I resisted the temptation to use the ???profit joke, I wish others would do the same.)
Edit: Got same error after patching this way from a clean jar file.

u make a vid on how to do it?
i tried with the minecraft patcher but in the second box wen i click on minecraft.jar again it doesnt let me choose the simple map on options help?
I love this mod.. and I have a suggestion for it- if possible.
Currently you cannot view whatever is below the ground.. which is all well and good.. however if it is possible you should include a cave mode.. or some sort of slice method that shows the area where you are currently standing.
For example.. you are standing on a cobblestone point in the center of a 3x3 room with walls that are made of dirt, and the flooring below you covered in cobblestone.. you are one block off the floor (standing on the cobblestone point in the center of the room), your map would make a horizontal slice of the area like so:
[] [] []
[] []
[] [] []
When you lower yourself to the cobblestone floor.. your mini-map then adjusts and goes a layer down on the slice, and shows the area relative to your new height:
What I guess I'm trying to say is.. where Z equals depth, let Z be the layer slice in a cave mode.
Once I've got it stable again, some kind of cave mode is next on the horizon. In keeping with the ethos of keeping it non-cheaty however, I will be making sure that it can't be used to spy behind walls.
I'm currently re-doing all of the chat stuff from 0.7, which is technically going to be in its own plugin, but once it's there will let me bind keys to toggle the map on and off again. I will have another go at the patcher to make it more crystal clear how to install this, especially when it comes to not deleting other mods at the same time. For the people that are doing it right, it seems to be working though, which is good.
Experiencing an odd glitch with this, says error: overlay not found when playing, but that's an error (though I would like to know what's wrong there, it's not my main conern). However, the sound, is the problem, it takes all sound effects/music, and plays it many times really fast for each small sound, creating a horrible type of echo-effect. Any ideas?
EDIT: Sound problem gone, Overlay problem persisting.

Edit edit:
Nope, back to this.
What the **** is this.
It can't find the overlay.png which should be in .minecraft/mods/SimpleMap . Did you extract it there?

I am using Windows 7 so I think I'm fine there.
Any help would be appreciated.
