From what I can tell, the beta 1.3 update only includes the smooth/gradient lighting aspect of BetterLight. The update does *not* appear to include ambient occlusion (where the inner corners of objects are shaded darker). My guess is Mojang didn't want to feature ambient occlusion until the light-shines-through-corners bug is fixed.
Personally, I think ambient occlusion is the best part of the BetterLight mod, and I'd like to be able to enable it again.

Ambient Occlusion is the same in the update as it was in the mod. A few extra lighting bugs maybe, but otherwise no different. Not sure how you managed not to pick up on that, did you actually try playing...?
Probably because the light in the corners is gone? And because it doesn't work the same on water as the mod did?

Hm... actually, I am seeing ambient occlusion on *some* objects. But, unless my memory is failing me, it seems to behave quite differently from before. I thought there used to be ambient occlusion effects within the 3D shapes of fences, for example, and I'm pretty darn sure ambient occlusion used to work on soil. Now, ambient occlusion only seems to work on solid cubes. If that's how it always was, then I apologize, but my first impression was that a lot of the ambient occlusion I was used to was missing.
Actually complaints I've heard (yes heard...from a voice...to me. Not in my head) were that BL made everything too dark, too many objects shaded from all sides, that kind of stuff. Realizing the way MC uses one light source, they accepted it.
Now it seems toned down a bunch. Maybe a happy medium?
BTW MrM...thanks for all your hard work on this mod. I'll try and read back again to see how you liked the change. (otherwise...I'll wait and see if you do or not :biggrin.gif:)

Anyway, I am getting the triangle shadows now even when I have no mods in 1.3_01. I get it on ice and when a shadow hits ice. Also I can see triangle lighting on sand when at a certain distance and angle.
But other than that everything else with the lighting is OK.

its not working for me. i patched gerudoku texture pack (it worked) then i tried patching grass and light it goes to 7% and stuffs up. ( on Minecraft Beta 1.3 )

If I'm not mistaken it's because he hasn't updated these mods for 1.3 yet.
anyone know when better grass is going to be updated.. i dont know anything about programing or i would try to fix it myself... i NEEd my bettergrass/simplemap ...

Perhaps doing a search of MrM's posts (by clicking his name) would tell you the fact that no one knows when there'll be an update, as he hasn't posted since the 19th (3 days before 1.3 came out)

I want an update for BetterGrass for 1.3 sooooo badly, this is one of the mods I CAN NOT play minecraft without.. it just doesn't look right! Feels like the game is incomplete..
Why Notch didn't add that as an option along with BetterLight lord only knows.. why Notch doesn't add all sorts of things lord only knows..

can you get a patch working for 1.3_01
