I decided to create a Mob Texture Pack. I'm posting here thinking that some might find it useful. Comments (constructive or otherwise) are welcome.
I created these specifically to be used with ExtraNoise's Quandary Pack and the Minecraft Texture Rotator Mod. Included is an original Creeper, as well as twelve Creepers based on the Quandary grass texture (so they change foliage along with the world.) I imagine that these will become less useful as our favorite texture pack designers complete finish their mob textures.
Done
[*:o5zn5h1f]Spider
[*:o5zn5h1f]Zombie
[*:o5zn5h1f]Skeleton
[*:o5zn5h1f]Creeper
[*:o5zn5h1f]Quandary Creepers
Design Goals
[*:o5zn5h1f]To improve original textures.
[*:o5zn5h1f]To create less "noisy" textures.
[*:o5zn5h1f]Embrace, not fight, the blocky style.
[*:o5zn5h1f]To maintain iconic elements of the original designs.
Installation
[*:o5zn5h1f]Navigate to \.minecraft\bin folder.
[*:o5zn5h1f]Open minecraft.jar with WinRAR (or other appropriate program.)
[*:o5zn5h1f]Navigate to \mob directory.
[*:o5zn5h1f]Copy these textures into that directory.
[*:o5zn5h1f]Navigate to \.minecraft\bin folder.
[*:o5zn5h1f]Open \Quandary_<month> folder.
[*:o5zn5h1f]Create folder called mob.
[*:o5zn5h1f]Copy creeper-<month>.png into the \mob directory.
[*:o5zn5h1f]Rename creeper-<month>.png to creeper.png.
[*:o5zn5h1f]Repeat for each of the twelve months.
OR
[*:o5zn5h1f]Download the "For Quandary" .zip file.
[*:o5zn5h1f]Navigate to \.minecraft\bin folder.
[*:o5zn5h1f]Extract "For Quandary" .zip file into this directory.
Great! I've been looking for a mob texture pack! Especially for Quandary! Great!
EDIT: Wow. That double-great thing was completely unintentional. *face-palm*

Thanks! Credit needs to go to ExtraNoise for the base textures. I just added a little shading and the creeper face.

Quandary was my inspiration. Because I love it! I added a *.zip file with proper directory structure, which should make installation less of a hassle, to the original post. (Hopefully it works.)
Haven't updated the .zip files yet. I'll do that when I have the other two farm mobs done. I also have some changes to the zombie and a very minor change to the spider in the pipes.
I do have a texture creating question and hopefully someone will know this... The spiders, when they're out during the day, do they still display the eyes from spider_eyes.png? I had assumed they only show up at night, when they are aggressive, but I'm having a helluva time tracking down that doesn't want to eat my face, to test this.
I was wondering that myself. I have no idea.
Also, a seasonal spider mob set would be awesome. I was going to do it myself, but then I realized I was too lazy.

Eyes are only there at night. I unintentionally tested this when i changed some textures and they are a seperate thing from the spider itself.

What would seasonal spiders look like? Might give it a go once the other mobs are done. I was thinking of giving the chicken's plumage that changes by the season.

The pig somehow looks like he has an old-man's face... Big eyebrows, huge mustache...
I dunno, I cannot unsee anymore.
My girlfriend agrees with you. I like it, though.

Wow, thanks! I finally have mobs to use with my favourite texture pack. Love the gray zombie.
Also I agree with Nurio, pig has old man face, looks hilarious imo.

Hrm, an ice crystal/snowflake spider for winter, a flowery spider for spring, some brightly colored tropical-looking spider for summer, and maybe a pumpkin spider for fall.
Those are all cartoony ideas, but that's the best I could imagine for 'seasonal' designs.
Just some variation in colors I guess, not exactly seasonal, but more alternates to spice up the spider texture with the changing seasons. Like Pai said, an ice-color spider for winter, maybe brightly colored ones for spring, that sort of thing. Purely for variety. I might have a go at it myself later today, I've got free time.

This is basically the best thing ever and now that I have bonemouse's permission, I will be officially including these works in the upcoming version 3 release.
You can't believe how delighted I am. Bonemouse is awesome.
(Also love the idea of other seasonal mobs. But not too ridiculous.)
This version includes new textures for chickens, cows, sheep, pigs, spiders (unchanged), zombies (updated), skeletons (unchanged), seasonal creepers (unchanged) and slimes.
Seasonal mobs are still in the works, as well as ghasts and zombie pigmen reskins for the Halloween update.
Here's a quick hack job of the pig I did for the pigmen that are coming in the Boo Update.
I had originally intended to do a less gruesome version of the zombie pigmen, but I guess it's changed now to just tribal ones? What are people's feelings on this? I'm torn. I like both versions.
Or maybe tusks for the pigmen. And a slightly redder hue?
For the ghast, not too sure. I like the leak version a little bit more, with the closed mouth. But it makes sense to have it agape. So probably do something in between.
EDIT: Just discovered that it's not two versions, but two different textures that get swapped.

Thanks for the suggestion. I will try that next time. But for now, I'm going to stick with horrible and non-unique style.
Glad you like it.

And I've just finished version 1.0.
You can get it on my blog: Punching Trees

EDIT: Maybe put them in suits?
Seriously though, any ideas for the Ghast?

This is the full release (direct link) which includes all the friendly mobs. Next release will be post-Halloween sometime.
