Here is a picture, i hope you don't mind i wanted to take a look at it in-game so i could give a better thought on it... people would probably like this if they like the original look of minecraft cause it's that bright green like original is just at a higher res. it doesn't look bad but if someone was going for realistic you could achieve better results when dealing with a 128x128 texture imo.
but to me that really does look like an original minecraft look color wise, i think people would enjoy it.
so just think of that picture as just a little teaser shot people can glance at, but i was wondering a little off topic but how big would the palette/canvas be for a 256x256 texture pack... i want to see what that would look like on grass.
and what is an easy program that is sort of light weight for doing this kind of texture work?
-gimp and ps
Ah I see, well that I wouldn't know since I use adobe software for pretty much anything I do when it comes to design, and art. The only other program I can think of that can do some of the stuff photoshop can is corel. The most light weight I can think of is MS paint for pixel art, but working at sizes like the one I'm currently working on will be dreadful. Unfortunately I believe they're are no light weight programs that can pull off excellent textures since it depends on the ability of the person using it that determines the quality. I can do some pretty amazing stuff on ms paint, but I prefer not to because it's time consuming.
I'm currently using photoshop cs4 to create these images. And yes the canvas is huge but that's how big 128x128 tilesets will be. Here's a teaser and proof of what I've done so far.
I'll post more as I go, but for now here's all I got. Critique early so I can change it to the likings of others.
Edit: All textures make a seamless pattern so far.
The dirt doesn't look dirt-like enough - right now it looks more like a hardened rock wall with several man-made scratches etched in. Needs to look more soft and broken up.
What I had in mind for that was like cliff face type terrain. Since most of the time when you see dirt in minecraft is when it's part of a big cliff or hill. However I will make alternate dirt for those who don't like rough dirt. :smile.gif:
I think if you are doing a "realistic" pack i would not have so much of a vibrant green for grass and what not, since this is going to be a 128x128 pack you can see a good amount of detail in the grass and if you have vibrant colors it might come out more surreal looking than real...
like look at the picture i posted above, that grass was just pulled from google images, i don't know the source so i will not be releasing that by any means just wanted to show how the quality would turn out.
lol are you a user at fkn0wned?
also, where can I find a template to make 128x128 textures, and where can I find the HD texture fix if that is needed?
There are no available templates at the moment for they are too huge to upload to a image site. However, making one is fairly easy. All you need to do is create a 2048x2048 image, make a box with an outline that is 128x128 then copy and paste it across the document.
