Description
Normally, if you make any changes to the files in the resources directory,
Minecraft will re-download the default sounds and overwrite your custom files.
This mod allows you to stop that from happening.
Compatibility
Compatible with Minecraft Beta v1.2(_01)
oh god I just made what is essentially this exact same thing haha
Still, thank you. I'll link to it from my quack pack!
Great minds think alike? lol I actually made it last night for v1.1.2, but I knew Notch was going to be updating the resource update system, so I figured I'd wait until the update.
This only seems to work with the down loadable client, but regardless this is a huge relief for anyone who wants to use sound mods. I'll definitely be linking to this from my topic.

Whoops! I use the downloadable client, so I didn't think to test the online client. I don't know of any way to mod the online client (it's a security issue, any modifications to the client aren't allowed).

It's alright, I'll gladly take re-downloading the client whenever it's updated over having the sounds replaced every time I start the game up.
Unfortunately, when I follow these instructions I get a version of Minecraft that doesn't overwrite my modified sound files, but that also doesn't play sounds at all.
Minecraft has stopped running because it encountered a problem.

To keep Minecraft from overwriting your sound files, you need to create a file (not folder) named DO_NOT_UPDATE inside the resources folder.
For example, on Windows 7, you would create the file: DO_NOT_UPDATE in C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\.minecraft\resources\
Also, it doesn't matter what the file is (or what's in it), so long as the file is named DO_NOT_UPDATE.
Hope that makes a little more sense. (Probably not, lol.)
As far as Minecraft crashing, please make sure you follow the directions exactly. I think most of the problems are caused by the mod being install incorrectly, but I'm going to do some testing and see if there's something I messed up.
I'm confused by the "Drag the bf.class file into the open archive" part. By open archive... you mean the minecraft.jar file that I have open in WinRAR? I'm confused because obviously bf.class is already in there... ?
[EDIT] I get it! I get it! I didn't know you meant the bf.class from your download... because I didn't know there WAS a download. I thought the link at the bottom that said "Download: MediaFire" was telling me to download something called MediaFire... maybe change that to "Download: Sound Mod Enabler from MediaFire" ?
Now it's just plain not working for me. I followed your instructions (deleted the META-INF folder and copied the bf.class from your download into the minecraft.jar file) but my custom sound won't work.
I just wanted to test it, so I threw together an explosion sound for the TNT. I copied all the original sound files to a separate folder just to be safe, deleted the resource/newsound/random/explosion.ogg file and replaced it with mine (also called explosion.ogg, of course) but when I start up Minecraft and set off some TNT, it makes the original crappy explosion sound.
Am I missing something?
[EDIT] Also, I did create a text file titled "DO_NOT_UPDATE.txt" and put it in the resources folder with all the sound files.
[EDIT2] I just spent 10 minutes running in circles and FINALLY found a chicken/duck to test out that Quack Pack from dorino1, and to no avail - it doesn't work either, still getting those lovely clucking sounds.
- listen to explode.ogg, it's the old one
- replace it with my explode.ogg & listen to it, yup it's mine
- start up the game, hear the old sound
- close the game, listen to explode.ogg, it's back to the old sound
So it's definitely overwriting my sound every time I start the game up.
YES! It worked! I love you, dorino, and your duck sounds.
I remember older versions of windows having a "File" option under the "New >" tab when you right click in a window, but it's not there now (I run Windows 7) so that's why I was confused by "create a file", I was wondering, what kind of file?
But yes, removing the file extension simple told windows that it is an unknown file type, therefore it is a "file" called DO_NOT_UPDATE, problem solved!
So... does that mean that if there's an update for Minecraft I won't get it though?
I think Jyrroe was asking if the mod would stop Minecraft from being updated. The only thing this mod does is stop the current version of Minecraft from overwriting the stuff in the resource folder. When an updated is released, Minecraft will update like normal and you'll have to reinstall the mod, as dorino1 posted.
Awesome. Thanks to the both of you, Minecraft is getting better and better in this forum site. =D
I'm surfing for some more mods, any recommendations? I've already been through multiple retexturing mods and some new sound mods, I'm finding some things like the mini-map maker, cartographer, MC Classic level editor...

Hey.

There's your problem, right there. The file needs to be named "DO_NOT_UPDATE" exactly, no extension or anything.
[EDIT] Just for fun I tried making a shortcut to the .txt folder (also called DO_NOT_UPDATE of course) but still nothing.
