I LOVE this mod. I had tried to get a similar effect with texture editing, but without changing the code the best I could do was increasing the amount of hang-over that grass does on the edge texture.
This adds so much more depth to the game giving the feeling of rolling hilly fields with dirt ledges and cliffs rather than random dirt stripes everywhere.
I really really hope Notch implements this as a feature in the game. This needs to be the default setting.
i did everything the instructions said, except i see no difference, i edited the alpha one... and yes i tried starting a new game, the hills are just the same... looks cool though!
You added the files/deleted the mojang things in the minecraft.jar located in: .minecraft/bin/, right?
Editing the minecraft.jar from minecraft.net won't do anything.
Just wanted to say thanks all for the response to this mod. A few people have already said they found it by it cropping up in someone's screenshots which is awesome. I am currently trying to get it working a little nicer in snow and will put some instructions in the zip next time.
Not sure why that'd be, maybe an old version in your browser cache? Who knows. Making mods this way is like operating in the dark and the black screen is Minecraft's way of telling me I've replaced a leg with an arm.
I seem to be having a similar issue with my game. Running WIn 7 64-bit and using the EXE client, whenever I make this change and try to create a new world, the game loads part of the world and then the screen goes black and I have to close the game. When I return to the game, the newly created world shows a size of 0.0mb.
It works fine when I run it with an existing world, but whenever I try to create a new one, it breaks the game. Tried applying the mod three different times, once with the Jar / Zip extension change, and twice with WinRar. Same results both times.

That seems to just occasionally happen, at least it did to me both before and after applying this mod.

i have a suggestion to make smooth stone use the three sides of diamonds and diamond the smoothstone, allowing a custom texture to show cliffs as the side of the of the smooth stone cave floors and celings as the top and bottom

You mean like use the diamond block skin slots for smooth stone, so it can look different as a cliff wall than a cave? That would be nice, so caves can look different from cliffs, and no one really uses diamond blocks anyway.
Also, would it be possible to put textures in the empty slots and have them be read? That would allow for more complex textures without using slots of other blocks.

Sounds pretty awesome to me. It'd allow for a lot more complex textures, which I'd definitely like to see.

I would be ok with this.
Grass mod is sexy and having actual looking cliffs and such would be amazing.
Can someone give me a .jar with it installed that works, whenever I try running it, it just gives me a black screen. I've tried with the zip trick and 7-zip.

Notch has explicitly asked to not distribute modified versions of the game, sorry. If you're still getting black screens its either the wrong version of the jar to start with (delete it, let the game redownload it) or you're forgetting to delete the files in the META-INF folder of the jar.
At the moment it doesn't work with snow because I couldn't work out how snow works but I think Ive got it now so I'll do a new version in the next few days.
The cave textures thing for smoothstone... its awkward. I ~could~ make it work, (and I wouldn't necessarily need to touch the diamond block texture slots to do it, there are enough "free" texture spots), but whichever way you did it what it'd mean then is that there'd be a whole bunch of texture packs that were broken by it, (or at least, looked really wierd). Wheras this fits with any textures that are out there. I kind of want to work within the boundaries of what works for everyone.

Indeed! :biggrin.gif:
Well, I will give it a few more tries later on... but I doubt the results will change. Anyone know why this might be happening?
