Due to limitations of the MC server, anything higher than 1024 doesn't work correctly. But it is possible for the server software to load a map that's 2048 high.
CONSLUSION:
Every size up to 2^26 is possible for the official server.
Also, the gzipped map can be up to 1MB, I think.
I thought of a nice way to use a huuuuueg map with a custom server: send a blank (0x00 padded) gzipped map to the clients, then have a metric crapload of lag sending all the single block edits.
Someone should try this :tongue.gif:

<Quatroking> Minecraft is a dozen of puppies and kittens smashed into cubes, then mixed up with a few ounces of pure liquid rainbow and after that it spends two hours in the oven. Ready to be played by another drooling ten-year old
I want a 1024x1024x512 map, flat grass, with a flood barrier
Please and thank you :smile.gif:

The Freefall server has a map that's 64x64 by a crapload of height.
I only use the Official server when I host.
