I was playing around with Terragen, and realized that I could use exported height maps to create maps for Minecraft by using the import heightmap option in Omen. But I had to do quite a bit of Photoshopping and experimenting to get the exported heightmap to have the right height in the right places. The curve option is really useful.
Terragen makes it a lot easier than Photoshopping all the way through
First map I generated using this method. I was thinking about the Catskill Mountains:
EDIT#2:
I discovered earthsculptor, a terrain editing tool slightly similar to the above, except you can DIRECTLY manipulate the terrain. With a bit of alternating with Photoshop and stealing a section of the Mandelbrot set, I managed to create a fjord map.
I couldn't figure Terragen out for the life of me but I found a program called "World Machine" and it's pretty simple. Adjust a few sliders, hit a button a few times for some randomness and you get a nice heightmap.
Omen edits .dat server files, and I don't know how to convert.

That's a nice find, I think I'll go play with that as well.

Is it okay if you make me a map?
I can try. What do you want?

Um. Something similar to that. Maybe just grassy hills and a mountain near the edge. Only needs like 1 or 2 mountains by the edges. And lakes. I like water. :biggrin.gif:

Height map: http://img695.imageshack.us/img695/1578/testterra0.png
This method allows you to make much more realistic maps with far more control than using Omen.
I might make some different maps if I have time. If you want this map, just ask.
EDIT:
I found out World Machine works much better for terrain editing:

I still had to use Photoshop to get the curves right for the right water level and maximum heights. I also did some Omen editing to get the snow capped mountains. I was too lazy to stone the sides.

Substitute name by your login and slot by the number of the map (0-4).
BTW, nice idea :smile.gif:

You should teach me how to use Terragen2.
maybe next time you could try snow-caps.
You can try it out yourselves.
Also, with a bit of fancy Omen editing, I can easily transform the grassy mountains into rocky, snow capped ones.

Try to upload it with this: viewtopic.php?id=2508
Or just upload the .dat to www.gigasize.com or another upload site.

This is in my public server, not so fittingly titled: Chariot's Flatgrass Server.
