OK for everyone having problems with finding the stuff, the Alpha files are now located in:
C:\Users\YourName\AppData\Roaming\.minecraft\bin\minecraft.jar.
You may need to turn on Show Hidden Folders, but I would hope you already have.

lulz. Alright then I'll help. NO DO NOT DELETE YOUR SYSTEM FOLDER >.> If you don't know what it is, don't do it, learn about it so you can decide for yourself. The rzi error could be due to
1) Opening the temp folder in Run with the wrong slash (I forget which)
2) Having any instances of Java programs running
3) Try using 7zip or winZip

I made a back-up of Minecraft.Jar to be save. I screwed up by accidentally deleting it.. And my backup isnt working because it wont save as a .jar file, it saves as a winrar archive.. can anyone help?
I did the same thing while I was editing some terrain. I had to to just reinstall the game, luckily I had also backed up my worlds in another folder.
Will someone please help me? I got 7-zip and added the files from the Alpha pack (Brown & Bloom by DVan), to minecraft.jar, and then I went onto minecraft.net to try it out, and it's not working. I keep rechecking to see if the textures are there, and they are. BTW, in case this has something to do with it, I play minecraft on my browser instead of the downloaded version (because the downloaded version likes to give me errors)
You know the first time I tried this I made a stupid mistake which caused a problem... it took me a few minutes to figure out what I did. Chances are that if I made this mistake, other people have as well. I'll explain here quickly... it might help other people who have done the same stupid thing.
I tried to follow this procedure with the Zelda texture pack... I downloaded the file and dragged the replacement files into the minecraft.jar. I was very careful to copy everything into the proper folders etc.. that wasn't an issue. Everything seemed to work fine but when I fired up Minecraft... I got a solid black screen after the login and then it froze up.
When I took a closer look at the Zelda archive I noticed that there were also Photoshop .PSD files included in the archive for some of the textures... for example there was a "sun.png" file.. but below it was a "sun.psd". I'm guessing these are there so people can have the original to play with.. but I wasn't looking carefully enough when I did the install and I accidentally also copied those into minecraft.jar. I'm not a programmer or a Java expert.. so I couldn't exactly say why... but I can say that having those PSD's in the minecraft.jar WILL cause Minecraft to cough up blood and die. As soon as I redid it without those files in there... everything worked fine.
I've heard the term "HD" bandied about a bit, but I can't search it because it's too short. What's the difference between a regular texture and an HD texture? And does making a texture HD fix issues with gold blocks and bricks and stuffs?

Regular blocks are 16pixels x 16, "HD" blocks are just higher resolution (32pixels x 32)
hmm.. Im using 7-zip, about the same thing. I find the minecraft.jar files, right-click Pick 7-zip>Open Archive, I see the armor folder with several other folders and files. Open the armor folder, I see Chainmail and platemail only. No cloth or iron. I added armor files any way. It didnt work. I assume because the cloth files are some where else. I tryed looking around, I cant find them. I didnt extract any thing.
You just have to right click > 7zip > open archive
Nope, tried, 7-Zip when i tried nlocked adding the modded Jar file.
Also, i am having issues... I use the standalone client, and i did everything how it was (I re did the textures to Doku;s RPG pack, lol) and started up Minecraft, nothing changed, went back to the .jar file, and the changes where there, just not ingame.. started a new world, still, no changes, just wondering if i may have missed something, I did everything exactly as it was meant to be done, i even had to download WinRAR just for this :/ lol, but a very good zip program, best i've seen lol...
I use:
C:\Documents and Settings\CompName\Application Data\.minecraft\bin
And that gets the job done.
the CompName depends on your computer.
Thank you! C:
Ya, the minecraft jar in www.minecraft.net didn't work for me, seen this, tried the bin folder, rreplaced the jar, and now, minecraft is stuff (Or taking forever) with 'updating minecraft' [and below that it says] 'done loading'
You just have to right click > 7zip > open archive

So is there? Or is this all integrated into the coding and the graphics as lost as Atlantis, to all except Notch himself? :V
EDIT: NEVER MIND
For anyone having problems on Windows 7, go to www.minecraft.net/infdev, and let it load and stuff. Then, close the game and try the %Temp%\www.minecraft.net
I'm testing it now.

Same way as anyone else. The client is just a launcher for the game if it's offline.

Yeah, I'm having this same issue.
Let's make it a reality.
