"A lot of servers will turn to crap, because lava and water will be everywhere. "
Map editors can do that.
As long as you make OP choices carefully, that really isn't the issue.
Yeah, but it is a lot more difficult. If you can just place it, it could destroy a map in seconds.
I'm pretty sure that if he can do all the stuff hes done so far, could could make different levels of admin. You could config what levels have access to what commands, etc.
I've been told a few times before I should make other kinds of unbreakable blocks, but I am at a loss for how I can make them look different from normal blocks or otherwise differentiate them. At least the admins should be able to tell, even if it's invisible to the normal users...
How about a lighter/darker texture colour?
Darker! Darker! Every unbreakable block should just be a darker shade of its breakable version.
Also if it hasn't been asked, will grass actually be able to grow in shade if there is other grass around it? I hate when I have a grass "yard" with like a windowsill from my house creating 3 blocks of shade, making the grass under it die and be normal dirt.
Infection could be a doable game mode. For skin change, I'd just have to make everyone named "Zombie" in red and it will be clear. Zombies aren't allowed to chat, either.
I can already configure what levels have what commands and so on, I actually have four different user levels aside from normal (JTE is 200, ops are 100, helpers are 50, normal is 0, and muted is -10) I just haven't bothered to make / commands for changing them yet ... Ultimately I should hope that the server never needs to go down and I can just do EVERYTHING in-game, but that's easier said than done. The server requires a lot of maintenance to keep up so far.
I have been hosting my server publicly for the past few days, with my name in the title so you know it's mine, but it's been very distracting having to staff it myself because apparently everyone else is too stupid to be able to deal with griefers and reloading the map on their own... I should probably add a list of maps you can revert back to since the minute-ly saves are often not far enough back, but I'm starting to get lazy on all this and want to do more exciting things.
So if you want, come and see. It's up right now, even.

Yeah but imagine how awesome it would be to see them change into a Zombie. :biggrin.gif:
Anyway it'll all be good ^^
It would be pretty awesome to see it in working action.
Notch gets pissed off at me sometimes for undermining all my work. ... his work. yes.
I really want to put up a download for the server scripts here or something, if only for the sake of letting others see my beautiful code and make use of all the anti-hacks I've added in and such, but it's still not stable, it's not ready, I have so many more features to code, and then the source would be available to everyone and they'd all start making their own mods of it and such...
Wow, sounds like an amazing piece of software you've got going, although it really shouldn't be released publicly. I'm loving the features though, keep up the awesome work.
Notch gets pissed off at me sometimes for undermining all my work. ... his work. yes.
I like you JTE, but Notch has a very valid reason for being annoyed. Coding is a very small part of game creation, he worked on the idea and formulated how it would work and he built up the interest in the game, that's a huge part of it and he feels you've taken this and tried to copy it and are trying to ride off the community he built with his own skill and ability.
The code is yours, sure, but the idea and program it interacts with isn't. You're undermining his work because you're building what he has intended to build before him.
Coding is all I can do, all I know how to do, and I'm stuck in the position of doing this because I can't do the other parts myself. I have no skill or ability of my own in the fields of community interest, ideas and arts... or I might not be here in the first place.
The fact that I end up nothing more than a programming leech quite depresses me sometimes. And yet it moves...
I cannot even tell you how excited I am to hear about this. I have recently been considering trying to find a way to add some custom commands into the MC server for a LAN server I run, and this seems perfect! The fact that you've done it in Perl is fantastic, not only because it's my language of choice but also because it's a very interesting use for Perl. Please let me know when/if you release the server because I would be anxious to test it out locally (3 players). Also I'd love to poke around in the code if you wouldn't mind, I'm curious to see how you got it done and how easy it would be to modify. Great job!

All valid points, but practically any games spawn mods made from the community that loves it, never to undermine the developer's work, but to further the lifespan of the game somehow.
From what I read on the blog, there's gonna be an lua allowing extensive server modding to encourage us to make our own game modes. woot :biggrin.gif:

if it were not for notch JTE would not have made this, so notch should feel honored. if JTE just blindly released it then notch should get pissed, but he has not.
and even if JTE did blindly release it, notch legally couldnt do anything about it.

The reason Notch is angered by JTE's actions is because he is trying to leech the success of Minecraft (which he openly announced) and therefore instead of fairly competing by creating his own game in similar concept, he would like to work off the basis of Minecraft, feeding his appeal directly to the Minecraft community and in doing so "stealing" customers from Notch.
The server software JTE has created also undermines Notch's plans for server mods. Because of the way server mods operate (paid only customers usage, new game modes open for creation). Then this steals away customers too, by opening it up to free-players.
I'm all for custom servers during this period without the Lua scripting. But these operations should be shutdown immediately upon release of the Lua scripting. Which, unfortunately, includes this custom server.
We can't have people cracking the game and opening up exclusive features to free users. It's unjust and unfair on both Notch and the paid-users.
Yes we all complain about DRMs etc. But the reason they exist at all is to attempt (and fail at doing so) stopping Pirates. Minecraft doesn't have, and won't ever have a DRM. Which means Notch is relying on faith in humanity that they will not attempt to crack the game. And instead will support him by purchasing the game.
I'm only 16, no job. Therefore no sustained source of income. But I've bought the game and it hasn't forced me to live in a box on the street or anything drastic like that. I'm sure if you ask your parents or grandparents to spare a little cash ($15 isn't really that much compared to retail games, which I'm sure you have bought at some point) then they will buy you the game.
I'm getting off the point though now. Just, remember, it's Notch's game and he should retain control over it. If it's his wishes to not have people making hacks for it. Then you shouldn't.
That being said there isn't a way to stop you, but if you attempt to advertise said hacks on here. We will remove them and ban you (after Lua scripting is implemented).
Edit: That's not to say we will ban you immediately. You can advertise the SERVER itself. But not a download for the software or making additional game modes created with the custom server available to free players. I wanted to make that a little clearer.
Sorry JTE, it's the way things have to be. Kudos to you though for your hard work in creating this.
The really "fun" thing about all this is the fact you'll probably have to re-code some compatibility things when the next Minecraft client/minecraft-server.bin is released so it'll be rendered moot on the next client anyway, if work on it continues to go on after that point (when Lua support is added) then yeah
It could be used, if piped right to deliver lava to a location.
Also prone to accidents.

Former #minecraft channel operator.
No I mean hardware wise.
That said, if I were Notch, I'd be pissed off at how this undermined all my work.
