I want to modify the models and textures of sandstone and it's variants (smooth, chisseled, etc) with my own custom models. I tried doing this with this code:
This however gave me an error, saying that the block's name was already registered and therefor it could not be overridden. Therefor my question is, how can I change the textures and models of a block that already exists?
I'm not sure where you'd put the files in a mod (I have no experience with Forge, I just replace the files inside the jar using the same folder structure as the vanilla assets), though you could include a resource pack which only includes new textures/models and other ones can still be used with your mod (assuming that changing textures/models isn't the only reason you want to mod the game, then you only need a resource pack).

This can easily be done with a resource pack in vanilla:

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
