So, as soon as I'm able, I'm going to use LearnToMod to eventually find out how to make a mod, and I plan on trying (Trying is the keyword here.) to revive MineUp. In case you don't know, MineUp is a mod which changes the usual "dimensions" formula a bit, and makes it so there's no longer bedrock at the bottom of the world. Instead, it's Obsidian, and digging through it will bring you to the Nether, with no loading screen at all. Similarly, building/flying upward will bring you to the abandoned Skylands dimension, again, with no loading screen at all! The islands from the Skylands are just... there! There isn't even shadows of the islands on the ground, and being in the Skylands makes stars appear in the sky, regardless of time of day, and makes more stars visible of it's night! It's an amazing mod concept that sadly hasn't been revived. I've heard that people have tried to revive MineUp in the past to no avail, as it's a hard mod to recreate in new Minecraft versions, but I want to give it a shot, if the original creator allows it, of course.
At some point in Minecraft Beta, the creator of MineUp, and the creator of GravityCraft worked together and merged their mods into one. We won't be speaking about GravityCraft just yet, but I'll get to it. Anyway, so, MineUp by itself would change new worlds, and it would do it regardless of world setting (It was Minecraft Beta, so there were no alternate world settings anyway). Although this is fine, it would conflict with some mods today. GravityCraft, on the other hand, when combined with MineUp, changed the world settings altogether. Some settings were combined into this whole new interface, which would take wayyy too long to explain here, so here is a video CaveManFilms made many years ago, explaining this feature. (Go to 0:43 for the world options I'm talking about)
Have you watched it yet? If you didn't, anything I'm about to say won't make sense. So, you saw how you could modify world layers to be upside-down to work with GravityCraft, add more layers, change layer height, etc. etc.? Well I plan on doing that kind of thing too, and making it it's own World Setting, like the SuperFlat, or the Amplified! That's where GravityCraft comes in. If I can get permission from its creator, Ivorius, I plan on recreating that too, in the future. But instead of making them a combination of one mod, I'll have them seperate mods that work together, that way people can download GravityCraft if MineUp won't work for various mods they have installed, and vice versa.
Ok, now let's get on the topic of What I would add to MineUp.
Let's say you have a mod like the Aether II mod, that adds a new Sky Dimension known as the Aether, or some other mod that adds a new version of the Nether, and you have MineUp. Wouldn't it be cool to make it so you reach the Aether if you build up enough? I plan on adding that feature! (It will be hard, but more on that later.) Of course, this might destroy the difficulty of getting to the Aether, or the fun of having the original Skylands up there, but that's where the World Layer thing comes in. In the World Layers menu, when adding World Layers, you'll be able to choose what you want this new layer to be, whether it's the Overworld, Skylands, or the Aether. Now let's talk about the difficulty of creating this mess. I know zilch about modding. I know absolutely nothing. That's why It will take forever to create. That's why I'm learning, though. Once I learn how to make mods, and I make a few myself, I'll try my hardest to make this a reality. I can't make promises, as some stuff will be either incredibly hard to program, or impossible, like adding the Aether to MineUp and making it work right, but I'll try! Wish me luck!
It's really nice to see someone trying to revive this mod. I tried to do this by myself but I didn't have the knowledge to do so back then.
It also seems to appear that the community doesn't care about this at all. so many views but no reply at all, strange.
Its not that the community doesn't care, it's that like me everyone feels there's no hope of this( or GravityCraft ) ever getting revived. Like said in the OP: Reviving this has been attempted before and all those attempts led to the one trying just giving up from the sheer workload.
No one bothers to reply because they don't want to waste time getting excited for a port of a mod that has a track record of getting dropped right after getting picked up again.
Some of the stuff mentioned is easier than others. For example, having obsidian instead of bedrock and falling through to nether is quite doable.
The problem is when people who are new to modding get too ambitious. We regularly find people who don't even know Java trying to do things like "create a revised combat system" and such. You gotta cover the basics as even creating a custom block takes some work and knowledge and that is well supported by forge and tutorials. So if you don't see a lot of people rushing to help port a gravity mod it is because that is a really advanced type of mod.
So my suggestion is to try to revive the old mod one bit at a time, starting with the easiest stuff and working towards the more complex. Also, if you don't get obsessed with matching the previous mod exactly, but are instead more flexible with the concepts, then you'll have an easier time. For example, it is really easy to have the dimension change if you build up high enough. However, if you wanted fancy visual effects where you could see the other dimension before you're actually in it that would be advanced.
So I recommend starting with simply making teleport to nether and skyland work automatically based on depth/height. Then I would probably replace the bedrock with obsidian. Then I would probably work on the skyland dimension (or maybe have your mod work with another mod that already has a cool sklyand-type dimension) to get it how I like it. Then once you get really comfortable as a modder you can look at gravity.
Also the workload is the main issue. Do you know how extremely difficult it is to port a mod using base class edits to not use them, let alone update it to a recent version of the game in the process? I may not be a good coder by any means but I do know some java and what I know is more then enough to say anyone attempting to port this will spend more then a month at the mininum doing so unless they happen to be very good coders( like ichun ).. and all the good coders have their own mods to worry about
All that combined will make it so even new coders won't be able to update it for years unless they have no life and can dedicate all their time to learning.
Long story short: Im one of the mods biggest fans so if someone who knows what their doing picks it up then yes, ill be pretty dang excited. Other then that im not getting my hopes up just to get burned again and I can gurantee im not to only one.
As much as I want to do this, I don't think I can. I don't even know why I made this post. I should've known how lazy I am. I'm too lazy to even watch tutorials. What is wrong with me?
I apologize for giving false hope. I just wish others would be willing.

Hey, I just got an idea. Maybe the both of us can start learning how to mod, and we can work together on MineUp! Like my original plans are, we can make other, smaller mods to get used to modding, but I think I'd be more motivated to learn modding if I learned with someone. You seem to be the only person I've seen who loves the mod as much as I do. I have no life (Well, I have a YouTube channel, but it's on hiatus), and I can dedicate time to learning. Why I haven't yet, though, I have no clue. What do you say?

Im busy a lot of the time due to IRL stuff but can try I suppose. Word of warning im pretty lazy too xD
I did have an idea for at least a inverted world type though, just not sure how you would go about coding the nether under the world without massive lag. That was the original mods main issue. My inverted idea was to make "upside down"
versions of the vanilla blocks/items. They would basically be the same thing except with a flipped texture and certain things would work inverted, like water/lava flowing up, sand/gravel falling up, etc. Making inverted blocks/items is the easy part.. the hard part is making a dimension or world for them.

Or simply port the world layer/inverted world features and add compatibility for this mod similar to the original Mine Up: https://minecraft.curseforge.com/projects/up-and-down-and-all-around
