I was looking to make my own custom mod. Obsidian tools ( I know overdone, but its my first one and I'm looking forward to putting out better mods). I want to be able to use the mod without waiting for these mod managers to update to the current versions.
The Mod Idea
I want to be able to take say 4 obsidian into a crafting table, then have that make shards and use the shards to make the obsidian tools. The sword could have high damage but somewhere similar to iron durability, maybe less. The pickaxe be really quick yet poor durability.
If you know how to do this can you help me out or if you know of a webpage that can help me in this, it would be greatly appreciated!
It can be done, but it's not worth the hassle, and it will NOT be compatible with any other mods, most likely.
Not really looking for it to be compatible. Just as a single mod to get my feet wet in coding. Nobody's posted any tutorials most likely do to the sheer problems it causes.
But the question is why? You can get great coding experience using Forge. All the decompiled Minecraft source code is visible in the Forge environment, so you can hook into it and examine it to your hearts content. And you can legally distribute whatever you make.

I think I'll give both a try. Everyone seems to be using it. I would then need to keep forge to run with the mod, correct?

I have a tutorial, but i don't recommend not using forge. I believe this is not using forge.

Yes, if you make a mod that uses forge, than anyone using the mod needs to have forge installed.
But like you say, everyone is using it, so nearly everyone that wants to use your mod will already have it installed
