You're probably having trouble with installation, just download your desired version from files.minecraftforge.net, unzip the files into an empty folder, shift right click the folder, open command line, then run "gradlew setupDecompWorkspace eclipse" in cmd. After a few moments, it will be ready. Point eclipse to the eclipse folder in the folder with gradlew.

I figure I can copy/pase reverse engineer the code I need, the mod I have in mind is just another bow and arrow.
don't be rude, you should have expected that answer with the question you asked. if your modding for 1.8 videos will be pretty lack luster as forge is in beta and you shouldn't really attempt modding for it yet. if its for 1.7.10, YouTube is littered with them, i hear mr crayfish's tutorials are quite good which you can view the first episode
Are there any updated tutorials that can walk me through the steps of making a mod for people who have no clue how to make a mod?
Seriously the second link on google is a video on how to do it.
You'll need to learn Java before you attempt modding.
