IIRC you now want to do something along the lines of
world.setBlock(x, y, z, blockid, metadata, 2);
The 2 at the end is a flag that says how things should be notified. Changing it to a 3 will result in it notifying the surrounding blocks, IIRC. The MCP comments for world.setBlock(int x, int y, int z, int bid, int meta, int flag) should show the way.
I completely overlooked that. ._.
Rookie mistake on my behalf.

It was working in 1.5, but now with the 1.5.1 update it seems to have changed.
I don't understand what is going on.
When I place my block I want it to check if there is an air space beneath it, if there is it will set it with my metadata.
I replaced it with .setBlock() for testing purposes and it worked. Just not with metadata.
If you need any more information I will share.

If you are updating your mod, just simply change .setBlockMetadataWithNotify() to .setBlock().
