This is a LiteLoader mod for Minecraft 1.9.4 and up based on a feature in Not Enough Items. It is designed to show a yellow "X" or transparent square over blocks where the light level will allow mobs to spawn during the night but not during the day (i.e., above ground in the overworld) and a red "X" or transparent square over blocks where mobs can spawn at any time. This mod requires LiteLoader 1.9.4 or newer to run. Download it here.
By default, you press "L" to toggle the overlay, though this can be adjusted in the controls settings of Minecraft.
I have decided to give up on trying to make this mod work for 1.9.0, but am continuing development for all newer versions.
As of now, the 1.10 and 1.10.2 versions of the mod have been combined into one file listed for 1.10.2 that's compatible with both. Just place it in your mods folder (not the versioned subfolder) to have either version of LiteLoader load it. If it's not working, run the LiteLoader installer again to get the latest version of LiteLoader for your current version of Minecraft

Yeah, that's what I mean -- I wrote the description when I was tired, so that's understandable, but I'm kicking myself for not noticing it any time between then and now. Fixed in the original post

I have the latest version of Liteloader for Minecraft 1.10.2, the snapshot release. I am using this in partnership with forge.
For some reason, Liteloader will not load this mod. I cannot understand why. I dropped the zip into my mods folder. It doesn't look like it throws an error message or anything. It's simply ignored. Any tips?

Mumfrey never changes the name of the installer, despite updating liteloader. To make sure that you have the latest version of liteloader, go to .minecraft\libraries\com\mumfrey\liteloader\1.10.2-SNAPSHOT and delete the jar. Then run a profile with only liteloader 1.10.2 to force minecraft to download the latest version of it to that same spot. If you only want to run liteloader (not forge), then you should be all set. If you want to use forge, then copy the new jar that was downloaded when you ran liteloader 1.10.2 by itself to your mods folder to replace the one that's already there, as I think it's the same jar that appears when you hit "extract" in the installer. If you've followed up through this point, then you've successfully done it the hard way.
The easy way is to redownload the installer from the jenkins build site and hit extract (for use with forge) or install (for standalone use). Just copy the newly extracted mod to your mod folder as you've already done before and you should be golden.
I've tested version 1.0.0 with the 1.10.r1 functionality on the latest snapshot release since Mumfrey added compatibility between 1.10 and 1.10.2 versions of liteloader, and it works for me. As far as testing it with forge, I wish I could, but my pc can hardly handle liteloader, and would die if I installed anything more extensive.
Other than that, I'm not sure what could be causing your issues.

Yay! I got it working. Thanks for the awesome mod, Shadow Hawk.
Turns out the issue wasn't with Liteloader or Forge, but somehow a broken download link. When I originally downloaded the mod, it was a Zip file, instead of the '.litemod'. I redownloaded again from the link above, and got the correct '.litemod' file.

Everything is working now.
What browser are you using? Some browsers don't like the .litemod extension for files, especially since they can somehow tell that the internal structure is that of a zip file, just renamed to .litemod since liteloader will only load valid mods with that extension. The easiest fix is to change the file extension yourself from .zip to .litemod -- you'll get a warning saying it might be unusable, but you can ignore it

I already have, and it's been up on curseforge for a while. I've been meaning to go through and update the pages for all my mods to reflect this, but I guess I missed this one. In the meantime, just click the "view all 4 downloads" button
EDIT: The page has been updated, and you should be able to get it from here now.

This is a super helpful mod. Any chance to get an option for a square overlay instead of an X? Sometimes the X can be hard to see. Perhaps there could also be an option to increase the render distance?
It'd be a little tricky for me to figure out how to do this, but I could certainly try. As far as the render distance, I can't make any guarantees, but I will warn you that if I succeed at making that a setting, it will most likely destroy your FPS. Any changes won't be out any time soon, since I forgot my coding laptop when I came to visit family for the holidays.

Perhaps just render a filled square instead of lines?
My FPS runs pretty high, so I feel like I could tweak the render setting to be out a bit farther. But I can understand how this would affect others. It would certainly need to be a setting and keep things as they are as the default.
Thanks for taking a look, and I hope you're having a happy holiday with your family

I've actually figured out how to change the render style (and had already decided to have it as a transparent full block overlay on top) and even got transparency working so you can still see where you're going. What's got me stuck currently is having the intensity of the overlay as a slider option, and I've not yet looked at render distance

Ah, my apologies. So you have rendering figured out, it's more about user interface. Good luck! Thanks for taking the time to think about it.

Sorry, should have mentioned the toggle is "L." I've updated it in the original post

This is an epic mod. Quality of life increase is amazing.
Question: Do you mean the yellow X is where they can spawn at night? Your post says during the day.

Such a great mod, thanks again for this. Makes staring at F3 and wandering around a thing of the past!
Real useful, thanks!

Yeah, I know. I didn't know much about what liteloader files were. If they had a certain formatting or anything.
I downloaded the mod the first time with Windows Edge. The second time I downloaded it, I was using Chrome.
Is there any plan to update this to 1.11?
