If you've ever tried to make a Minecraft video, you've probably run into the numerous problems of costuming ingame. The skin server can take forever to update and you have to reboot your client just to check, and usernames are always getting snapped up while you wait a month to change one on yet another purchased account.
Not anymore.
Features
With the Wardrobe Mod, you can configure a vast array of different costumes, each with different (or identical!) usernames and skins. You can give them Alex's small arms, you can have them only change your username or only change your skin, and you can even adjust or disable the particle effect of changing costume to really nail down the look you want.
This mod also comes in two versions, one client-side only which can be used on any 1.8 server and one server-side to help everyone know what's going on in your filming sessions.
Instructions
First things first, go into your config file and find the wardrobemoda or wardrobemodb file (depending on whether you're using the Client or Server version, respectively).
Under Costumes, you build up your collection. Each costume has a reference name, a username, and three booleans controlling whether it has small arms, changes your username, and changes your skin.
Then, you need to include the skins for the costumes in your texture pack. Inside the assets folder of your resource pack, add a new folder named either wardrobemoda or wardrobemodb (same as the config file) and give it a skins folder too. Inside the skins folder, dump all of the skins for your costumes. Remember that each skin file must be named in correspondence with the reference name of the costume used in the config file. If the costume is set to not change your skin, you don't need a skin for it in your resource pack. Also remember that everyone playing on the same server with the Server version of the mod will need the same skins to see the same thing.
With that done, your wardrobe is now ready to go. Hop ingame and type /wardrobe list to see all the available costumes in the wardrobe. To alter your particle settings, type /wardrobe particles <true/false> to turn them on/off and /wardrobe particles <particle name> to change what kind of particle is displayed when a costume is changed. Lastly, use /wardrobe set <costume reference name> <optional target or all> to apply costumes to yourself or others, and similarly /wardrobe clear <optional target or all> to remove them.
That's all there is to it! Enjoy

Alright, I'm trying to set up the mod, and I can't figure out the file structure for the texture pack. Does the "skins" folder go inside the "wardrobemoda"/"wardrobemodb" folder, or inside the "assets" folder? I'd appreciate some screenshots of how you set it up if you can.
wardrobemoda/wardrobemodb goes inside the assets folder, and the skins folder goes inside of them.
So it's: resource pack -> assets -> wardrobemoda -> skins -> skin files
Okay, so I have that set up properly, but I'm getting a broken texture when I use the command. So far as I know, I've set the config file up properly, and the resource pack is in place. What can I do to troubleshoot why textures aren't showing up?Okay, I solved that. I'd accidentally capitalized the "skins" folder. I'm assuming these need to be 1.8-format skin files? I've also noticed that trying to use a two-word name for a costume doesn't work. Did I mess up with that?I'm Sherlock Holmes today or something. I managed to get the skins working by reformatting them to 1.8 dimensions, and renamed them to one word names. Other than some of the fiddly bits of making them look right, I'm set!
That being said, thanks for the help!
I'm trying to get this to work so my daughter can use her own skin on my account. I'm on Mac OS 10.9.5, Minecraft 1.8.8, Forge 11.15.0.1655. She made a couple of skins and I put them in resource packs > assets > wardrobemoda > skins . I added them to the config file. Using /wardrobe list works just fine and her skins show up in the list. However, when I try to /wardrobe set skinname, I see the particle effect but the skin changes to something black with pink arms, shaped like Steve not Alex. Both skins I try end up displaying like this, even though the skins themselves look nothing like this. It's as if the mod isn't really finding the skin files. Any ideas?
Having the same issue as Lolkja. Really want this to work. Just don't get what I'm doing wrong. I've carefully followed all the instructions. I'm at a complete loss as to why this isn't working.
UPDATE: Okay, discovered that I typoed on the name of one of the folders in the resource pack. That helped, as some of the skins are working. Some still result in the no-texture appearance. Carefully going over everything to find the issue.
They are definitely 1.8 skins. Overlays included.
Same here. I adapted and tweaked these skins myself in GIMP, using the 1.8 templates as a guide.
I'm not sure why it worked, but renaming the problem skin and it's reference in the config file slightly seems to have fixed it. Not sure why the old name presented a problem. It was just four characters long and was definitely spelled correctly in the config file.
It's a fantastic mod, and will be very useful for video making! Thanks!
Did you need to include the .png extension anywhere? Is the mod picky about case?
I thought of both, but neither proved to be the case. File names and references were in lowercase. And none of the other skins needed the extension.
Welp, I've discovered a couple of issues with the mod. It doesn't play well with the More Player Models mod. Animations and poses won't work if you've got an Wardrobe mod skin applied.
Also, I've been having an issue where my skin shape keeps randomly reverting back to Alex, even though it's a skin for the Steve shape, and has been set as such on my account. I tried loading a costume that was just to change the shape back to Steve, but no dice. It had worked earlier, but this time, it just didn't work. Changing to one of the other costumes that featured actual skins *did* fix the shape, though.
It's a neat idea, and I look forward to trying it out again at some point. It's possible that the two mods work just fine individually, and break each other when installed together. Worth looking into.
Finally got it to work. I changed the filenames of the skins to something longer than 4 characters. Not sure why it would matter, but my daughter is happy.
