Welcome to the discussion thread for Chisels & Bits (C&B) and Flat Colored Blocks (FCB).
First, if you have issues or ideas about the mods please refer to the issue tracks linked for each mod respectively this makes keeping track of ideas and issues much easier and if you create an issue you won't get lost in the shuffle.
Second, I don't intend on back-porting either mod to 1.7.10 or earlier so please do not ask.
With that said I hope that people will share their experiences and constructions with everyone, I'd love to hear what everyone has thought of using the mod so far as well as well as see some of the cool things that you have made. Feel free to share your creations and discuss the mod in general.
Both C&B and FCB both require Forge, the minimum required forge varies from build to build, I simply suggest using the latest recommended available for your version of MC.
This mod adds several chisels, a wrench and ways to copy designs and store bits. These tools enable you to create new custom decorative blocks and designs to decorate your bases and improve the flexibility of your building style.
A mod that generates a selection of simple colored blocks for use in building and creative projects. Highly configurable with settings to adjust number of hues, values, and saturation, as well as min/max ranges.
I really like the engraved glyph designs and the en-laid colored patterns in the black/white surfaces...
I've put in for a request to forge so I can do per face light... so that in the future FCB will have glowing bits without high block light ( small amounts of bits don't cause a lot of light by default ), I think those would look really cool glowing in the dark.
On the topic of engravings, here's a trick I'm proud of: Minestrappolation 4 blocks with their patterns, cores, etc. replaced with various gems from Biomes o' Plenty to create 'glowing cracks'. With the new support of light-emitting blocks in Chisels and Bits, since these are just the outer faces, one could conceivably 'hollow out' a chiseled block and fill it with glowstone to impart lighting to the finished project.
Those gems have a really nice bright texture looks pretty good when paired with the dark brick. I have tried similar things with a few other blocks I've seen but those probably look better then any of the combinations I've done so far.
I guess that is mostly because I've stuck with the vanilla blocks.
I've been trying to think of a good way to add placement modes without changing the existing break/place behavior that the mod currently uses. So far the only idea I have is a new item that is basically the reverse of a chisel, so it would have modes and place instead of break. I have mixed opinions however since that would mean placing with a the Left Mouse button.
will you add soon a multipart integration for 1.8.8 [by Amadornes]so we can make stuff like stairs etc.
Once the mod is out and ready I'll check into adding support for it, however you should be able to make stairs with just C&B, I've done carpeted stairs with wool and wood and things like stone stairs ( see below )
Some fancy new improvements for both mods coming soon,
FCB is getting transparent, and glowing blocks, so of course that's more bits to play with as well...
Mean while C&B is getting improvements to how it renders Translucent faces, if your you have ever tried to build a long pane of stained glass with C&B you probably were a bit sad because the edges between Blocks showed up... Well not anymore this means we can make really nice windows
Along with that improvement is more accurate sound for chiseled blocks ( uses the type of block ) and some memory/cpu optimizations.
I have a few more improvements planned for C&B as well so look forward to that.

Lookin' neat! I look forward to seeing what sorts of window designs folks make. In response to the 'glowing blocks':
I bet these totems I made will look a lot better when they've got a glowing face and a glowstone core to emit light. I wonder if I can figure out a good way to match colors from block-bits with FCB equivalents. .
Match Colors? What are you trying to do, find colors that work with other mod blocks? or something else?
The forge PR for lit faces was accepted so that feature will probably be in the next version of C&B as well ( 1.8.8 only ) Of course I've always been a fan of glow in the dark stuff.. so I'm pretty excited for that.
Figure out what color a 'bit' from a mod block is, so I could match its color (and thereby shading/pattern) in a transparent or luminescent way with FCB. Anyhow, that's cool!
Hmm might be worth an optional item or client side command in FCB, could sample what your looking at and give you the closest shade number.. I'm not sure if it would be that useful tho in the grand scheme.
Something more useful might be something that lets you search shades by rgb/hsv sometimes finding the next shade from a color your using to use as an shadow or highlight can be a bit tricky.
I don't want to be too technical with the mod... but if it removes the guess work it might be helpful.
In the end such features probably do not belong in the mod, really want to keep the feeling it has at the moment and I think these types of things might ruin that to a degree.
Two pictures demoing the new glowing Faces in C&B, the blocks are from FCB - Other light emitting blocks will glow in the dark as well, like glowstone. Really looking forward to seeing some builds using these new features, I hope I have a build out before the weekend so everyone can try them.
Awwwww, yessssssssssss. That right there is my jam. My JAM. Embedded glowing runes is exactly the kinda stuff I am looking forward to making. Are those going to work in 1.8 or just 1.8.8?
Just 1.8.8 I'm afraid, It requires an addition from one of the latest builds of forge ( on 1.8.8 )
That's fair. I'm gonna scope out mods to use alongside it on a 1.8.8 instance, then.
EDIT: I tend to mostly use the vanilla + FCB when I'm making custom 'furniture' and such with C&B anyway. Plus, not fussing with all the other mods installed should be relaxing.
Think I'm almost to the point where I'm going to be ready to do a new release, http://imgur.com/a/CMzg9
Wrapped up the majority of the changes today, just need to test things thoroughly and do the final builds tomorrow.
Notes on the pictures,
the first shows multiple levels of transparency ( this is not the default ).
second shows FCB blocks with light emission disabled ( this is not the default ).
Third shows C&B working with FCB blocks with lighting emission disabled. ( if any one asks, that's the Version of C&B not MC )
Its important to me that the mods can be used purely cosmetically in packs that consider light sources a source of difficulty so I went the extra mile to keep everything in line with that.
Of course everything should work normally with light emission enabled as expected.
I had originally planned on continuing my 1.8 support until forge came out of beta but several of the new features cannot be back ported and some of the changes use new forge code, so for this release I'm focusing on 1.8.8 only.
I did however back-port the bug fixes from C&B 1.7 to 1.8 and released it as C&B 1.6.1 hopefully if your not on 1.8.8 yet you will be soon.
With that C&B 1.7 for 1.8.8 and C&B 1.6.1 for 1.8, and FCB 1.2 for 1.8.8 are now available.
I hope everyone enjoys the new features, if anyone runs into any bugs please post them on the tracker, and if its a crash don't forget the log.
Released a small update for C&B today, mostly it was to fix the two possible crashes I found over the weekend. ( on both 1.8 and 1.8.8 versions )
However it also included a few new features in the 1.8.8 version: Grid snapped chisel modes, Rotation of patterns/chiseled blocks in your hands, and some optimizations.
I've added the idea to my list however I can't really promise anything at this point, its a growing list and I keep changing my mind about what might or might not make it into the mod, and designing custom rails might be too restrictive to be functional ( collision / mine craft travel seem pretty finicky. )
Do you think you'd be able to port the new chiseling modes in 1.8.8 (1/2, 1/4, 1/8) to 1.8? I'm still sentimental about 1.8 considering few mods have moved up to 1.8.8, some of which I use for cosmetic purposes with C&B.

As of July 2019, I'm stepping away from these projects, read more on the github.
