Release!
Most runes from the old mod have been implemented as a separate download (classic dusts pack). Visual effects are missing, but everything else should work as expected.
Changelog and instructions are in the OP. I await your bug reports and comments.
I am a bit confused as to what to do with the classic runes pack. it is a collection of files, but nowhere in it does it say where to put them, or what to do. I tryed both the .py executable, and the bat, but i have no idea what they did.

I have added dust pouches and a "glow" to runes when they are active.
With this release, I have also changed both mods to "beta" on curse, which hopefully means they will sync better across the different curse sites + launcher

1) for the "invalid pattern" message: make sure the pattern is correct.
things to watch out for, especially if you place the pattern using the book or command:
Make sure you have enough dust of the correct types in your inventory
look out for blocks like tall grass or snow (or any other blocks) that could be in the way - check the amount of space required for the rune
make sure there are no other dusts placed within 2 blocks of the pattern. dusts separated by a single block are counted as part of the same pattern
2) Information about runes is found in the tooltip of the Runic Dictionary. if you press shift, the tooltip will expand to show information about the required dusts, sacrifice, etc.

Strange... For the pattern, some runes have a purple "placeholder" dust, which must be replaced with a dust of your choice (this changes the effect or makes it more powerful. note that for classic runes, only the classic dusts may be used). For the sacrifices, make sure the items are *on* a dust block - the center of the rune of fire is an empty block

Is there a way to add your own runes?
You can export and share patterns with the /rw_export command (and they can be placed via /rw_import). If you know how to mod, it should be easy enough to add runes and dusts. If you don't, feel free to post suggestions (preferably with a link to the exported pattern JSON) - when I'm happy wiht the state of the main mod and classic pack, I will probably make a "community" pack.
will u backport classic runes and dusts too 1.7.10 ???
No. That would require much more work than i'm willing to put in for an EOL version.

New releases today, quite a few fixes and tweaks to the main mod (see github or curseforge for changelog). I'm also pleased to confirm that these releases work on both 1.9.4 and 1.10, thanks to the hard work of the Forge developers.

I doubt I'll implement them. I think it was only used for the rune of the mountain (I'll figure out another way of marking that area). I agree that it looked pretty cool for decoration, but for that purpose, chisel & bits (a new mod) does it way better than I could

Progress report:
I have now implemented all* runes that were available ingame as of the latest version of the original Runic Dusts mod (v1.3.2_CORE and v1.6.2_DEFAULT-RUNES for MC 1.5.2). I will now have a look at what I can do about inscriptions, but I want to have a stable release by the end of the month (even if inscriptions are not in).
* excluding the runes that no longer have a use (spawner reassignment) and those related to inscriptions

How about a community pack where players can suggest ideas for runes?

how are we supposed to know what the required sacrifice is?
Hold shift when looking at the tooltip of the Runic Dictionary with the appropriate rune selected. (the next version will add a prompt for that)

I haven't gotten around to using this mod, but does it include/do you have plans to include the original mod's hammer & chisel?
Because while Runic Dust may not have used it for much, it would have a lot of possibilities for user-created stuff
