Runes of Wizardry is all about placing patterns of Arcane Dust to create Runes with various effects.
It intends to be a full reimplementation of the old Runic Dusts mod.
The main mod (Runes of Wizardry) adds the basic framework, as well as decorative dusts. Other dusts and runes are supplied as separate packs. The Classic Dusts Pack implements the runes and dusts from the Runic Dusts Mod.
Most classic runes are currently implemented, with the exceptions in the TODO list below.
Dusts are placed via right-click in a 4x4 pattern per block
Dusts are removed via right-click with an empty hand. Right-clicking with the dust broom removes a full block at once.
The Runic Dictionary has basic documentation about all registered runes in the form of a tooltip (details when holding shift). The selected rune may be selected by left or right-clicking in the air with the Dictionary, and shift-right-click on a block with it will attempt to place the currently selected rune.
Runes are activated by right-clicking them with the Runic Staff after having dropped the appropriate sacrifice on the pattern.
Dust pouches can be used to store an almost infinite amount of dust of a single type. To insert dust in a pouch, place it in a crafting grid with the dust.
patterns may be saved to a JSON file with the /rw_export command, and placed from JSON or a registered rune with /rw_import
Crafting: (Recipes are temporary)
Arcane Dye (allows to change the color of chalk dust) - Dyes can be of any color and center is chalk dust)
Chalk Dust:
Pestle:
Other dusts: use NEI/JEI to get the recipes for now
Would it be possible to get a backport of the 1.8 version to 1.7.10 so those of us who are still waiting for many, many, many mods to update can still use this mod?

New release! The most important changes include
a crude color picker in the Arcane Dye GUI,
dust blocks & tweaks to recipes
Tweaks to colors
dust gets broken by water (like redstone wire)
(see changelog in OP for details)
Next planned features: Runes & documentation

I've been thinking about it, and while some basic functionality should be possible to backport, other would be very painful... Also, time to work on this is quite scarce, and a partial backport could greatly delay the implementation of new features (i.e runes...)

Honestly I'm sure that most of us would be happy with just the 16 different colors of decorative dust. I know I would!
Glad to see this is coming back, but if I might make a request...
I always hated having to place huge dust patterns by hand, constantly referencing some guide, especially when I was on the go. Could you add a way (when you get rituals working) to take a pattern of dust on the ground and put it into an item, like a magic scroll, that is one time use to place the pattern down instantly? That or make the scroll reusable but it takes dust from your inventory instead of destroying the pattern used to make it.

That should be possible.
On the current status of development:
This is finals season for me, so I didn't have much time in the last few weeks, but I might have a bit more soon-ish.
I made a guide book using guide-api, it's not super great but it works.
I am currently trying to implement pattern finding and matching for runes, but it's complicated.
Waiting on Guide-API and NEI to update to 1.8.8
Other than that, I am thinking of adding dust pouches (that can store an infinite amount of a single type of dust) but I'm not sure if it would be useful or how to handle that. is this something that would be used?
For runes/patterns, I currently have it set so patterns may have gaps of at most 1 block between connected dust blocks. This allows patterns to be made of multiple distant sections, but will force players to place runes at least 2 blocks apart. I can easily change it to disallow gaps. Which is better? (see below)
With the current setting (X is a placed dust "block" with a 4x4 pattern and O is air)

Good to see this coming back. Also, posting because mobile version of this site doesn't let me just sub to a thread without posting.
this needs to hopefully work a lot like witchery, but for 1.8. if you add rituals, make a in game book that tells you how to do them.
can't wait to see some great artworks using the dust

Turns out I felt it made more sense to try and backport basic features to 1.7.10, which gives us a new release!
Technically, you get all 16^6 (or 2^24) (16,777,216) possible colors
YOU ADDED FULL RGB SUPPORT THE ART DEGREE I HAVE IS SINGING YOUR PRAISES RIGHT NOW!
that was in even before the dusts were placable
To be fair, the last time I actually played this mod was back in 1.6.4
Fixed a few bugs today, try the new release (1.7.10-0.3.1)
This was absolutely one of my favorite mods way back when. It's great to see it in development again.
Glad to see this is coming back, but if I might make a request...

XXOXX
XXOXX
is a single pattern
XXOOXXX
XXOOXXO
is two different patterns,
XX and XXX
XX XXO
What effects?
1.8.9 update!
Most systems are now working (still no ingame documentation ) (see OP for changelog)
Over the next few weeks, I'll try to remake as much as possible of the old dusts/runes as a separate mod (I want to keep this as modular as possible).
Thank you for this. The simplicity of the original was part of what attracted me to it in the first place.
Status update:
Things are a bit crazy for me right now, but I've managed to add the following:
Core:
Classic dusts pack:
TODO: actually add the effects - this might take a while, but I will make a release as soon as the easier ones are ready
awesome!
