Depending on the plugin you probably can also message a server moderator and ask them to give you permission / to temporarily disable the plugin. Generally they're willing if you ask and tell them what specifically you want to download.
So evidently Mojang changed the way the launcher versions work, redownloading them when it would have been legal before. I've updated the installation instructions based off of the info provided by BlackR / Artemis00 (thanks!)
Close the launcher
Copy the .minecraft/versions/1.x.x folder to .minecraft/versions/1.x.x.wdl
Go into folder 1.x.x.wdl.
Rename 1.x.x.jar to 1.x.x.wdl.jar
Rename 1.x.x.json to 1.x.x.wdl.json
Open 1.x.x.wdl.json with a text editor of your choice.
Change the "id" value to "1.x.x.wdl" (the name used elsewhere).
Scroll to the bottom of the JSON file and delete the entire "downloads" block near the bottom. (new!)
Open 1.x.x.wdl.jar with 7-zip or another archive manager.
Delete the META-INF from within 1.x.x.wdl.jar (this folder is used to check if the jar has been modified).
Copy all of the files from within the World Downloader zip file into the jar, overwriting files and merging folders if prompted.
Restart the launcher, "edit profile" (or make a new profile) and "use version" 1.x.x.wdl.

If your creative world is named the same thing as the server you connected to, it's likely that things will get overwritten. However, the mod is supposed to display a warning and give the option to backup the world if you've previously downloaded it. But it looks like that check doesn't occur if there is a world there but you've never downloaded to it. I never actually considered the case where you're connected to a server with the same name as a (separate) single player world.
World Downloader does generate some automatic backups, so you might be able to find the world in one of them. These backups are saved in the world folder (%appdata%/.minecraft/saves), along with the world, and by default they're zip folders. However, the backups are generally only saved after the download is finished, so it might not be there (the case where the world's modified before backup is supposed to be handled with that other screen, but here it doesn't seem to happen).
If it's not in any of those backups, there's a chance that windows' previous versions has it saved. I don't think that's too likely though...
Sorry about that, and I'll fix it so that it doesn't overwrite other worlds without warning now - it shouldn't be too hard. Hopefully you'll be able to recover your world.

It depends on how you're hosting the server. If you're running it on your computer, you can just copy the world to the new server and then edit server.properties to use it - you may need to rename the folders for other dimensions, though. If you're using an external server host, I don't actually know how to do it but depending on the host there may be a way to upload the world.
However, there isn't an in-mod way to upload the world; it's only capable of downloading.

Do you have a bunch of chests on your test server? If so, can you get a screenshot of their configuration? This is definitely a different bug than the one previously reported.
EDIT: Also, that crash report should also have a "-- Block entity being ticked --" section further down; can you post that too? And can you get a screenshot of the area with that block, please?

I've just released 1.9a-beta1, which is a version compatible with Minecraft 1.9. Everything from the current 1.8d beta is included; in addition a few other changes have been made:
Fixed a threading issue with the save progress GUI that sometimes caused a crash
The player is now warned when they may be overwriting a world with the same name as the server, not just when overwriting a world that was previously downloaded
This version might be unstable, so if you encounter any bugs, please post here or on the GitHub issue tracker.

This mod doesn't use forge, since forge lacks (or lacked last time I checked) a way to hook directly into specific packets, which I need to do.
If you want to use the mod with forge, you have to use the liteloader version, which unfortunately isn't out for 1.8.9. You might be able to get away with using 1.8 forge and the 1.8 liteloader version, depending on your mods.
I'm having sound issues when using the WDL 1.9 beta. Regular 1.9 minecraft plays all sound effects OK and i've not used WDL for several years so I don't know if this bug is new to 1.9 or existed in 1.8
With WDL some sound effects don't play like: placing blocks, all mob sounds and picking items up. Some play OK, e.g. breaking/punching blocks.
I've tried replacing the openAL dll files but they appear to be generated when launching WDL in the folder \.minecraft\versions\1.9.WDL\1.9WDL-natives.xyz\*
I'm using windows 8.1 with the onboard RealtekHD sound. Should I mess around reinstalling sound drivers or not?... regular 1.9 minecraft works OK without WDL
