False, you can reduce that: there's 2 setBlock methods, one with 2 additional integers, first is meta and second is flag. By default flag is 3, but by changing this flag value, you can get it to not update lighting.
Also another thing that takes long, is that flag 3 synchronizes each block update with client. Changing that to 2, makes it that it does not synchronizes each block. Now in the end of explosion, all you have to do is to sync modified chunks.

Also, cool mod... Following it from when you posted it... We finally have good replacement for ICBM...
Well, it's not an ICBM replacement, not even close, but that's exactly the goal. I don't think I'll be able to let the missiles (if I get them to work) fly in a bow shaped path, but I can make something simular...hehehe
Also, there are still tons of features I have planned since I started this project, but still never started them (I'm looking at you, FA and napalm)
any lag that occurs now is due to vanilla updating of lighting when blocks are removed, so there is no way for me to reduce that

Even if it is not replacement yet, it's on its way ...
yep, I did that yesterday after posting my end, and removed that source of lag, it does result in odd floating water, but otherwise the blasts are now much faster. the limiting factor now is the client block update packets, if I remove too many blocks per tick, the client lags from the block changes.
edit:
I can do ballistic missile simulation (would actually give me a use for my university education!), I may be able to find time to help with that if you want.
To get the mobs, install the resource pack on the github, or use the Pokécube Mobs mod below.
Sounds, Textures and additional Pokemobs can be added by also using the following mod:

What!? If I use 100, it is much, much smaller, but I am still using the very first code (the second one you sent me has a faulty thread :p) anyways, I'm gonna try the even newer version.

Hello there! Did you ever wonder if there's a mod which combines explosives with technic (RIP ICBM)? If so, then this mod is for you!

Forget what I said about it not being an ICBM replacement, missiles now work correctly!!

:3 Please consider voting for how missiles should look like
And i voted... Config!
Between techne - low and wavefront.
Because people with good computers will love wavefront missiles. Some of them will prefer blocky stile, and there are still people with not very good computers. So both models should be avaible.
Doing techne - high in this case will not make sense, as rendering a lot of cubes may take more performance then rendering wavefront.

I changed the scaling back to 1/r^2 from 1/r^3, hence the massive difference in strength.

They are not avalible yet, but thanks to Rodol Phito, the rotation works correctly. Expect them in the next update
Awesome!
