Minecraft code changes are not as bad now as they once were. I've played Minecraft since alpha, and it has recently been a long time between updates compared to years ago. It's been 1.8 for a year and a half. That's an amazing improvement for modders' workloads, except that many modders had already left by then. I think that 1.9 may be the last official update (ever? at least for another year or two)...
Is Highlands compatible with your Geographicraft mod? If it is, then there's no need to re-implement the functionality. It seems like it might be able to make a world with HL and BoP biomes happy with each other too. At least, similar capability was in Climate Control.
I saw the hau thicket. From playing with the old Highlands, I was frustrated by how hard it was to move around the world then. I would be hesitant to introduce biomes that can only be moved through by destroying blocks. Can you post a screenshot of your willow? I would be interested in making one.
I'm going to set up my minecraft modding environment again and look things over. This isn't a promise but I will probably fix a few things when I recompile for 1.8.9, including thornbushes.
Mojang has already announced some of the changes for 1.10, though the name of it is Far-Future update, so you are probably right that it will be quite a ways away lol.
Glad you're going to at least shore up your 1.8.9 update before you throw in your hat. Hopefully someone will step up like Fabricator did before and keep it alive. Don't feel bad though, life happens to us all

I love the way you made the Willow leaves hang down,though I think the trees should be fuller. I also like the look of the Hau Thickets, but the limbs should randomly not connect on a side, so that it looks more like natural vines and not like scaffolding.
I finally got around to trying this mod and simply love it. Sorry to hear that it may not be continued for much longer but from what I see it looks like a mostly complete mod with a few exceptions. If the bugs could be fixed for 1.8 and a 1.8.9 version released it would be great; especially since I hate the latest direction taken in 1.9.
Here is a few of my observations I would love to see fixed. Leaf decay issue for Palm and Eucalyptus trees (sometimes partially with Spruce in the Alps but that could be because leaves go so far above last log). I noticed that in Swamp and Grey Mountain biomes there are trees with no leaves and I'm not sure if this is by design. This fits perfectly in the grey mountain biome and looks fabulous but somewhat odd in the swamp since there is plenty of water; maybe the Willow above would look great here. The final thing I would love to see is the thorn bushes, stairs and slabs completed to round it off. If it helps I experienced the leaf decay issue using Forge 1.8 11.14.1.1371 (this is for mod compatibility) and Java 1.8.0_74.

I was wondering if in future versions there could be a config to disable thorn bushes altogether? They make it so annoying when trying to ride horses while exploring to say the least. I also ran into a problem that I couldn't find a fix for; I tried to generate a new world in default generation and it still used Highlands generation for some unknown reason. I was wondering if there were any suggestions on where to sort this out. I almost exclusively use Highlands but sometimes when trying a specific seed for extreme survival it helps to just use default. By the way, this is in the 1.8 version. I would love to be solely in the 1.8.9 version but there are so many mods that haven't updated and don't work in 1.8.9 yet (and may not ever). I looked around but couldn't find an updated 1.8 version that contained those above mentioned fixes and hoping it was just an oversight that it wasn't posted. If not I understand since I know you are just trying to push through a few things before taking an extended sabbatical. That does tend to be my luck; find something great when the author is heading out the door. Above all thank you for the great mod you released that I still can enjoy.

As Robjinvogel said, this crash is the result of a biome being set to an ID that is too high. (maximum is 255). Highlands is configurable, you are able to set the biome IDs through the config file located in .minecraft/config/Highlands.cfg. Check if BoP has a similar config for its biomes and see if any are the same as Highlands biomes, vanilla biomes, or out of range.
I recently upgraded to 1.8.9 of the Highlands mod along with BOP and a few other smaller mods. While playing I have realized that I was getting a lot more Highlands biomes (which isn't a bad thing!) However, there were no BOP biomes spawning. After some tinkering with the mods, I pulled out Highlands and played with just BOP, and had no issues having BOP biomes spawning. I figured that I should bring this issue up with you. I've tried changing more of the Biomes IDs and had no luck even then. I'd really like to keep Highlands in my mod pack, but It's frustrating that I cannot get the two of them to work together. If you have any suggestions i'd greatly appreciated! Thank you :)!
But in this case, the Biome IDs are probably ok and it seems to be a Biome Handler ID that is out of bounds, right?
This is the first line of code in the stack trace. The array out of bounds is the biome array, with a max of 255. I don't believe there is anything wrong with the biome handlers.

Highlands does mess with the rarity of certain biomes, making the "rare" vanilla biomes such as Mesa generate as normal biomes rather than in the separate hard-coded way they generate in vanilla. If BoP also does this or uses some other way to tweak biome rarity, one of the two could potentially overwrite the other. I just took a look and it should have a line to only load the custom gen layers in Highlands world type but currently it always loads them. I put a change up on Github just now for that.

Seeing that you are pretty new here, I am going to welcome you: "Hello there!" and assume that you are quite new to using mods and editing configs.
If you have MoC, I guess you'll need something like Custom Mob Spawner or Just Another Spawner to get your mobs to spawn correctly in non-Vanilla biomes.
This could be configured in the CMS or JAS config files. You may need some extra information about the biomes for this, which can be found using Not Enough Items' biome ID dump tool.
If you need any more information, first Google. If you can't find any answers, ask me.

In the past I've had to delete CMS's config file after installing another mod that adds mobs or biomes to get CMS to sort itself out. You can MOVE the CMS config to another location (this is now your backup) and just let CMS act as if it was installed last and allowed to recreate a config file. Usually this fixes the issue but I haven't used it in awhile. If it doesn't work or creates any new issues you can always just replaced the new config with the old one you moved since this usually fixes most issues and is the easiest to try. Good luck.

Partially; I was getting some bugs in the Highlands worldtype. It's on my ridiculously long list of urgent things to do .

Mojang has already announced some of the changes for 1.10, though the name of it is Far-Future update, so you are probably right that it will be quite a ways away lol.
Glad you're going to at least shore up your 1.8.9 update before you throw in your hat. Hopefully someone will step up like Fabricator did before and keep it alive. Don't feel bad though, life happens to us all
That's the nice thing about the hau thicket: the way I envision it, if you just wanted to cross it instead of living there, you could just walk on top of the crust of leaf blocks. You don't need to build a drained corridor to cross the ocean without a boat, do you? My example hau bushes are the last two screenshots below.
The willow is the first three screenshots below, and here's the MCEdit model again too. The model includes one demonstration tree with branch shapes and canopy trailer examples, a minimum and maximum tuft, and one finished tree. It would have vertical strings of pale leavers for foliage (perhaps two strings per foliage block), grayish bark and yellow wood. People think of weeping willow as a swamp tree, but it totally isn't.
I love the way you made the Willow leaves hang down,though I think the trees should be fuller. I also like the look of the Hau Thickets, but the limbs should randomly not connect on a side, so that it looks more like natural vines and not like scaffolding.
I finally got around to trying this mod and simply love it. Sorry to hear that it may not be continued for much longer but from what I see it looks like a mostly complete mod with a few exceptions. If the bugs could be fixed for 1.8 and a 1.8.9 version released it would be great; especially since I hate the latest direction taken in 1.9.
Here is a few of my observations I would love to see fixed. Leaf decay issue for Palm and Eucalyptus trees (sometimes partially with Spruce in the Alps but that could be because leaves go so far above last log). I noticed that in Swamp and Grey Mountain biomes there are trees with no leaves and I'm not sure if this is by design. This fits perfectly in the grey mountain biome and looks fabulous but somewhat odd in the swamp since there is plenty of water; maybe the Willow above would look great here. The final thing I would love to see is the thorn bushes, stairs and slabs completed to round it off. If it helps I experienced the leaf decay issue using Forge 1.8 11.14.1.1371 (this is for mod compatibility) and Java 1.8.0_74.

In addition to the out-of-the-box functionality (no more going to Github to compile), there are several bug fixes, to leaf decay, thorn bushes, and ocean temples! Sorry but no stairs and slabs yet.
OcAMD, the dead trees are by design. In the swamp, trees can die from flooding by rotting their roots. At least around where I live there are many dead trees in wetlands. Willows will probably not be biome-specific but grow near water in most temperate biomes.

i found a strange bug when i create world i find a lot of strange holes and something that looks like explosion particles on the 1.8.9 version
I was wondering if in future versions there could be a config to disable thorn bushes altogether? They make it so annoying when trying to ride horses while exploring to say the least. I also ran into a problem that I couldn't find a fix for; I tried to generate a new world in default generation and it still used Highlands generation for some unknown reason. I was wondering if there were any suggestions on where to sort this out. I almost exclusively use Highlands but sometimes when trying a specific seed for extreme survival it helps to just use default. By the way, this is in the 1.8 version. I would love to be solely in the 1.8.9 version but there are so many mods that haven't updated and don't work in 1.8.9 yet (and may not ever). I looked around but couldn't find an updated 1.8 version that contained those above mentioned fixes and hoping it was just an oversight that it wasn't posted. If not I understand since I know you are just trying to push through a few things before taking an extended sabbatical. That does tend to be my luck; find something great when the author is heading out the door. Above all thank you for the great mod you released that I still can enjoy.

As Robjinvogel said, this crash is the result of a biome being set to an ID that is too high. (maximum is 255). Highlands is configurable, you are able to set the biome IDs through the config file located in .minecraft/config/Highlands.cfg. Check if BoP has a similar config for its biomes and see if any are the same as Highlands biomes, vanilla biomes, or out of range.

I recently upgraded to 1.8.9 of the Highlands mod along with BOP and a few other smaller mods. While playing I have realized that I was getting a lot more Highlands biomes (which isn't a bad thing!) However, there were no BOP biomes spawning. After some tinkering with the mods, I pulled out Highlands and played with just BOP, and had no issues having BOP biomes spawning. I figured that I should bring this issue up with you. I've tried changing more of the Biomes IDs and had no luck even then. I'd really like to keep Highlands in my mod pack, but It's frustrating that I cannot get the two of them to work together. If you have any suggestions i'd greatly appreciated! Thank you :)!
This is the first line of code in the stack trace. The array out of bounds is the biome array, with a max of 255. I don't believe there is anything wrong with the biome handlers.

Highlands does mess with the rarity of certain biomes, making the "rare" vanilla biomes such as Mesa generate as normal biomes rather than in the separate hard-coded way they generate in vanilla. If BoP also does this or uses some other way to tweak biome rarity, one of the two could potentially overwrite the other. I just took a look and it should have a line to only load the custom gen layers in Highlands world type but currently it always loads them. I put a change up on Github just now for that.
How does one make it so vanilla mobs and possibly MoC mobs spawn in Highlands biomes? Right now my Highlands biomes are completely empty

We've have been running CMS to get the MoC creatures spawning everywhere in vanilla environments.
The issue seems to be that no matter how I adjust the biome config file in the CMS folder, we can't seem to get any mobs (both Vanilla or MoC) to spawn in the Highlands biomes when CMS is running.
When CMS is not running the highlands biomes are spawning horses / cracked zombies, a few cows.
We've tried using the prefix set to true and false and adjusting the biome name accordingly in the biome entity config file
From our understanding adding a biome for a particular mob should read:
SDJ64 | Highlands_Redwood Forest
or
SDJ64 | Redwood Forest
In the past I've had to delete CMS's config file after installing another mod that adds mobs or biomes to get CMS to sort itself out. You can MOVE the CMS config to another location (this is now your backup) and just let CMS act as if it was installed last and allowed to recreate a config file. Usually this fixes the issue but I haven't used it in awhile. If it doesn't work or creates any new issues you can always just replaced the new config with the old one you moved since this usually fixes most issues and is the easiest to try. Good luck.
