You take your MC version, you download latest excore avaible for that version, latest JEI avaible for that version and latest FEI avaible for that version. Done.
I wish.
I'm trying to replace TMI, which didn't require Forge. In those days, I downloaded TMI, and used it. That's it.
Using FEI, here's what I really have to do :
Download Forge. Pray it works.
Download JEI, and hope it's as up to date with both Forge and all your suggested mods.
Download FEI, and hope it's up to date with JEI.
Download Excore, and hope it's up to date.
Download LLOR, which I have no idea what it even is, but whatever.
Download CEI, again, which I have no idea what it is, OR download More Overlays. Confusion has, at this point, turned to madness.
To get FEI to work properly -- according to other users -- you then have to manually go into the FEI config file and change the user assignment.
It's not clear if that overrides the next set of instructions, which is to set up a number of console commands to get the "custom permissions" to work.
If you do any of those steps out of the right sequence, the whole thing collapses. If the dev behind JEI doesn't keep up, the whole thing collapses. If you struggle, like so many do, to get Forge to behave, the whole thing collapses. If every single component isn't at the right version level, the whole thing collapses. (To be honest, I have triple-checked, and have ensured that everything IS to the right version, and it still won't work.)
I'm sure to a coder this is all very elementary, but to someone who simply (1) downloaded TMI and (2) used it 30 seconds later, this entire FEI exercise is like being forced to take an advanced course in programming.
There must be a way to get a simple TMI-style in-game inventory mod to work without all this struggle.
Again, if this is simple to you, that's great. I'm just not that smart.

First, you do not need CEI or LLOR. They are optional.
Second, no, there's ABSOLUTELY nothing to change in config. Seriously. Yes, you can go and hack permissions with some tools, but you shouldn't. Where did you even find this information?
Third, in some way, it's made for users already using forge. But it is not hard to install. And you don't need to launch MC each time. Just install forge and drop everything in mods folder.
(JAR modification actually seems harder for me).

Over at the TMI thread, and elsewhere on Reddit, people are saying they have to manually go into the config file and change the user assignments.
TMI ran through Magic Launcher, which doesn't need forge. Just point to the zip, and you're done. No jar mod, no Forge. Easy-peasy.
In any event, I can't get it to work. I'm not making this up to bother you, it's a real problem. The rollout of FEI just seems overcooked and needlessly overcomplicated, when compared to TMI. TMI didn't need Forge, it didn't rely on some third party's mod to lay over, and it didn't need additional mods installed in order to function.

Well, not everybody uses magic launcher... Like me, i'm using native one.
Also, there are launchers that allow to install FEI in one click. Take curse for example, create new profile (with forge), find FEI and click install. Done.
I'll never be leaving forge. Installation is NOT complicated*. Yes, i agree, quite a bit of dependencies (2). But there are mods that require a lot more other mods.
The reason why i require JEI, is purely for others authors' respect and to not confuse users. That's it! Techinally, i don't need JEI at all, but i won't copy somebody's else's code.
Look, if installing TMI is easier for you, use TMI. Some will find TMI easier to install, some FEI. While, TMI is more targetted towards vanilla, JEI&FEI towards already modded environment.
*- Here's the thing. If you think installing forge is HARD, go tell them, not me. If actually dropping 3 jars in mods folder is hard... I have nothing to say.
Took forever to trace it to your mod, sheesh, either way, your excore thing is flooding with errors about a missing image due to you ****ing up the url path, here:

This log message was added with new forge version (it was not logging it before). It will be fixed in next excore version.
And no, it's not due to breaking url path... It's due to something a bit more complex...
Well, now you got me curious, what caused it then ? I mentioned it as a potential error on your side because before coming here, when i was trying to find the culprit, I searched for the said error and it came up with a couple of pastebin's and posts from other users with similar errors in thier logs.

Well, you know, in vanilla, you can create .mcmeta files (by adding it to texture file name), specifying additional data (animation, blur...) for texture's rendering.
Because texture is on the web (and no .png.mcmeta file exists), when MC tries to look it up, it can't find it and throws this exception into the log.

TMI hasn't been updated in over a year. That's why people are searching for alternatives. Alas, FEI is not it.
I explained the process, and it's a bit more complicated than "dropping 3 jars in mods folder." You're being given valuable feedback here, and you're choosing to double down. You want to treat me like an idiot, go right ahead, but being petulant about an overly complicated installation process won't win you any fans. This is why you're the only guy posting in your own thread.
Also, since videos are a bit outdated, you do not have to install CEI and LLOR.
People having done this on camera in 3 minutes prooves that it works and there's nothing complicated.
There simply are people that tend to overcomplicate things.

Jeez, modders are a repulsive bunch.
No i don't want to. I want to understand what's going wrong for you, why it is going wrong and fix it.
...and how did even somebody think of in config user assignment?
If you could please provide the source of that information, i would be thankful. I do not want misleading (and overcomplicated) information to stay, as it misleads some users, like you.
-Fixed compatibility with new APIs. Closes #41.
-Bug & crash fixes. Fixed #30, fixed #31, fixed #40, fixed #42, fixed #45 and a ton more reported on curse and curseforge!
Note: with next release Excore (and all it's code) will be relicensed from CC-BY-NC-ND to CC-BY-NC.

This is weird. You shouldn't do anything. There's no even such thing as user assignment.

And i cannot fix it, because all the formatting gets otherwise deleted.
