I am no longer updating this mod. The source code is publicly available on Curse, so feel free to change/port/update as you see fit.
Have you ever wanted to build an evil lair, but found that even the best villain can't control Minecraft weather? Perhaps you're an industrious fellow looking for a way to farm zombie pigmen. Or maybe you're just an ordinary builder that's tired of your house being burned down? Well then, a lightning rod is just what you need!
Unlike their GregTech cousins, Don's lightning rods actually prevent lightning strikes by re-directing strikes in their coverage zone to the rod. The effective range of the rod can be increased by mounting it on iron bars, effectively making large lightning-free zones.
Usage:
Actually using a lightning rod is a bit more complex. Lighting is a fickle being, and capturing it requires a well-constructed rod and tower.
Construction rules:
Lightning needs a quick path to the ground. The best way to do this is stick your lightning rod on top of a tower. You can put your lighting rod on any opaque block. The higher the tower, the greater the rod's range will be. The protection area of a rod is a conic shape with the tip of the cone centered at the bottom of the rod. Iron is more conductive than air or wood, and is necessary to allow power to flow from a lightning rod to a bank block. Taller towers also make a powered lighting bank more effective. Any gaps in the tower will cause the effective coverage to end at that y-level. If you plan to put a lighting rod on top of a building, make sure to have a continuous section of opaque blocks under it.
Lightning bank usage:
Lighting banks collect the energy from lightning that hits the rod at the top of a tower. Each strike provides 5000RF of energy. The lightning bank itself has an internal buffer of 15000RF (both values are configurable). Lightning is a powerful force and will easily overload a lightning bank with a full buffer, so make sure to drain the bank after a strike. Energy can be drained from the sides of the bank. Make note that the bank block acts as a ground node, so any lighting strikes at or below its y-level won't be redirected to the tower.
Along with collecting energy, lightning banks have the ability to charge lightning rods to increase the chance of a lightning strike. Providing energy to the bottom of the bank will cause it to charge the lightning rod. This charge slowly builds up, and will eventually lead to a lightning strike. The time this takes depends on the height of the tower, with taller towers being quicker to strike. Note that a natural lighting strike during the charging period will cause the rod to discharge, starting the cycle over.
Can this please produce RF Energy? And download link not working.

I use 1.7.10 (Modded), so when I comment that I like a 1.8 mod, I will comment to downgrade to 1.7.10. I support no pics, no clicks. Suggestions that I think that are the best deserves a banner!
It is almost time to say goodbye to 1.7.10 because of the recent surge of big 1.9 mods.
Why MCreator sucks: jcm2606's file (doesn't open a new tab) He allows/welcomes anyone to link the file, so I put it here in my signature for people to know how MCreator functions. I thank jcm2606 (he's awesome) for creating the document/file and I'm just here to spread the word.
That's a enthusiastic maybe. I do want to get this out to those playing the 'bleeding edge' of forge, but it really depends on how much of a difference there is between 1.7 and 1.8. If it is possible I'll just maintain two versions, as many mods are still on 1.7.10.

Question: How often does lightning strikes in Minecraft?
Suggestion: 5,000 or 10,000 RF per strike?
And yes, please maintain two versions (1.7.10 and 1.8)

It will not be really hard, because:
1) Forge is not really different in 1.8 and 1.7.10, when you update, 95% of errors are in imports, so just shift+ctrl+o all classes.
2) Yes, xyz are now wrapped up in BlockPos, but for your mod it will not be big deal at all...
3) The only thing that may suck is rendering lightning rod in inventory, as there's no IItemRenderer anymore...
Theoretically, i think it would take you 5mins to update all, excluding lightning rod inventory rendering...

You'd be mostly right. 1 and 2 I figured out almost immediately. For some reason the .getBlock and setBlock methods have been removed from the world class; I'm assuming the getBlockState and setBlockState are there to replace them.
The hard part is figuring out how the new texture system works. I'm used to setting block textures in the block, but the getIcon method is gone now. Also, my models are in .obj format. While they worked great with AdvancedModelLoader in 1.7, there's no support for that format in 1.8. I actually have all the rod code working, only it's on an invisible rod.
Question: How often does lightning strikes in Minecraft?
It depends, really. Lightning strikes are subject to a random generator and can happen within seconds of each other or two minutes apart. I find a strike average of less than a minute to be common, though where it strikes is another matter. Even the tallest tower won't collect every lightning strike within the 9x9 chunk area centered on the player.
If you're really curious, look at this post. It might be old, but lightning hasn't changed much.
I was wondering if you would be thinking about adding some new weather/lightning related mechanics to go along with this mod. I think this mod has some great potential! i look forward to the future of this mod. Its really cool

The 1.8 version of this mod is almost complete. The only thing that's missing is the in-inventory texture. For some reason forge is finding the json item file, but is ignoring it when it comes to rendering the item. I don't know if that's fixable with the 1.8 knowledge base right now, so a beta download with working lightning rod block texture is available here:
I'm planning on moving the project to curse, so if you've been holding onto the download links they're going to change. It's easier for me to post files there than keep them in Dropbox.

Right now I've been updating OP's and files for two of my other mods, and the 1.8 version of this one. I finally got the texture correct for the lightning rod in inventory, so now 1.8 is up to speed with the 1.7 version. Tomorrow I'll submit the project to curse, so expect a big update to hit sometime over the weekend. That should include a device that collects electricity at the base of the iron tower, and allows power to be fed to it to attract lightning. I'm also considering making the device blow up if overloaded, to keep it from being too OP.
V2.0 with RF support is now out for 1.7.10. It adds a lightning bank block that can collect RF energy from strikes.
Things to know about the bank block:
The new lightning bank block will, when placed at the base of a tower, collect 5000RF of energy for each lightning strike on the rod.
The block only has a buffer of 15000RF.
If lighting strikes the rod, and the bank block's internal buffer is full, the bank block will overload end explode.
The bank block is grounded, so having him at the base of a tower removes the 5-block grounding requirement.
Energy may be drawn out of any side of the block, except the bottom.
Energy may be fed into the bottom of the bank block to charge it and increase the chance of a lighting strike (.1RF/t). The chance becomes greater as the lighting tower gets higher.
i have a suggestion, what if you can connect iron bars to the bank and each one will become electrified (for a cost of energy), and when any mob will touch it including you it will start burning (and it will turn back to normal bars), but if creepers or pigs will touch it... well, you know...
really the electrified bars will summon invisible lightning.
Hi would I be able to put a bank block on the top of a building/skyscraper and add iron bars on top and have the lightning rod still work even though its not technically touching the ground?
Hi would I be able to put a bank block on the top of a building/skyscraper and add iron bars on top and have the lightning rod still work even though its not technically touching the ground?
Yes. The bank block acts as a 'ground' in place of the 5-block minimum. The only problem is that the coverage area won't be large, as the iron bar tower won't be big. Though it will get hit eventually if you give it power.

Download link doesn't work :(. Please fix it.
Will you be updating to 1.8?
The energy idea is planned. Though the big question is: how much energy should be generated on a lightning strike? Too much and the mod becomes OP.
Also, apparently hyperlinks no longer work. Stupid forum update.

Fully-functional 1.8 version is now available. Next up: V2.0 with RF support.
V2.0 with RF support is now out for 1.7.10. It adds a lightning bank block that can collect RF energy from strikes.
Things to know about the bank block:

really the electrified bars will summon invisible lightning.
As human beings, we can teach, invent and discover, but if we can't do any of that we can at the very least be honest.
