Friend of mine had a desire for a climbable block (i.e. ladder) that couldn't be done with existing mods. He wanted to be able to descend into open space without relying on sand. He also wanted to be able to climb up out of places and haul his ladder object up after himself.
Enter Extendable Ladders.
Description
In the picture below on the left is a rope ladder. When activated, it removes additional role ladders from your inventory to build downwards until it either encounters a non-air block or you run out of ladders. Can only be removed from the top-most block.
Right, Extending Ladder, when activated it removes additional extending ladders from your inventory to build upwards until it either encounters a non-air block, a solid block it can rest on, or you run out of ladders. Can only be removed from the top-most or bottom-most block.
All used blocks will be returned when broken.
The ladders render correctly from both sides (unlike the vanilla ladder which expects that there's a solid block behind it).
(The "pulley rope" for the extending ladder has altered since the screenshots to be significantly less wavy.)
Apparently I'm a complete and utter jerk and come to this forum just like to make fun of people, be confrontational, and make your personal life miserable. If you think this is the case, JUST REPORT ME. Otherwise you're just going to get reported when you reply to my posts and point it out, because odds are, I was trying to be nice.
Oh please do and let me know what you think! I got poked to update a few of my 1.6 mods and this was one that was on my personal list of things to update (got one more that I would have to find the source code for...because there's no way in hell I'm rewriting its render code). The other was Phase Stone.

Encountered a bug that probably should not have been overlooked. At least for me, when I place a ladder down in any orientation, it always places the rest of the ladders facing north, which as you can probably tell, doesn't let me climb properly.

Interesting.
I'll take a look at it. Considering I was porting forward old code, I hadn't thought to test orientation.

Odd. I'm not on my PC right now but when I am, I'll see if I can post a screen.
Yeah, I'll need more info

File no longer available.
I'll take a look though, I didn't think I was doing anything that required some additional client/server separation (obviously the rendering is separated out already).
Edit:
Ha! I typo'd the common proxy's class path. Also noticed an issue with the rendering of the extending ladder's rope. Updated jar to version 3.1.1

Of course! What kind of jerk would I be if I didn't fix problems with my mods?

Huh, never thought about that before. May be a while before I am able to do anything about it, life's been...well...life.
Glad to see someone's still using this mod, though

Its only climbable from the one side. The backside is visibly there, but not climbable.

It's in the pic you posted, the ladder sprite renders twice within each "block" of ladder.
Also, if you try to break a rope ladder from the bottom, you get rope ladders in return, but the original block doesn't go away, allowing you to get infinite free rope ladders.

Ah. I'd have to fiddle with it, but it's not that big of a deal.

It shouldn't be possible to break it from the bottom *annoyed, worked really hard to make that code work correctly.*

Not seeing the issue.

Until someone ports this legendary mod I am leaving the minecraft scene. http://www.cosc.canterbury.ac.nz/greg.ewing/minecraft/mods/ArchitectureCraft/#mozTocId598776 I have watched too many legendary mods die and carpenters blocks sudden fallout out of mainstream made me cry. I realize the source is messy but some of the best mods from 1.6.4 and 1.7.10 were.

Minor thing: you can't put these ladders on any transparent blocks, including the back of a stair block.

The extendable ladder isn't climbable for me.

Would it be possible to make the ladders not render twice, back to back?
I am unsure what you are asking for.
