Description:
If you're like me, you despise the Nether. It's inhospitable, repulsive and can be a source of a major lag, yet eventually you will have to visit the dimension in hunt of exclusive materials. No longer is this the case. Instead of building up a regular Nether portal, you can light a hand-sized portal. Although entities aren't able to cross to the other dimension, items passed through it are infused with the magical properties of the Pocket Nether Link and are transformed into their Nether equivalent.
Recipes:
Quartz Ore World Gen:
Quartz ore now spawns in the Overworld at y-levels 20 to 30 for all your decor needs!
Details:
The Pocket Nether Link does not get used up in crafting, but it has a limited amount of uses(512) before you must craft another.
Overworld Quartz Ore has similar properties to Nether Quartz Ore.
Config Options:
Can enable skeletons to drop their skulls at a given % chance.
The Pocket Nether Link's recipe can be change to use 8 Obsidian instead of 4.
You can change the durability of the Pocket Nether Link.
You can disable Oveworld Quartz Ore Spawn, change Y-level spawn, or the rarity of Quartz Ore.
You can disable Pocket Nether Link Recipes if you only want the Quartz Ore part of the mod(Version 2.3)
Modpacks:
Feel free to include this mod in any modpack you wish. Just include a link to the forum post with my name or give credit in anyway you seem fit.

could you add a recipe for wither skulls? that'd make the nether useless
There is a recipe for wither skulls if you look at the recipe list. If it's the regular skeleton skull you're talking about, I have it set like that for now since when playing in a modded environment, there's a good chance that you have another mod installed that lets you obtain skeleton skulls as a drop, or you could get them from charged creepers in 1.8.
I was debating about adding a config option either for an alternative recipe for the wither skull or possibly a recipe for the skeleton skull, but I haven't figured out a recipe that would be balanced in my opinion yet.
Well, before I begin, I'd like to give you diamonds for originality! I was scanning the forums and was burnt out by the traditional MCreator ruby tool mods, but then came upon this one, which was, :o! ORIGINAL!!!!!So, Diamonds to you, sir! :Diamond::Diamond::Diamond:
I really like the idea of instead having to go to the Nether, you can just craft the items with what you would make a portal out of. The idea of the Nether in your pocket really got my wheels turning!
If I'm reviewing a mod, I'm going to review EVERY ASPECT of the mod. So that's what I'm going to do now!
First off, textures! You didn't have to do much with textures, because you only added two new items to the mod, but I think you did a good job with the two textures you had to make! They aren't Rival Rebels textures, but they aren't put-together-in-2-seconds-with-paint-and-pretended-I-spent-a-lot-of-time-on-it textures either, not even close to the latter, actually. The hand-sized portal looks like, well, a hand-sized portal. As for the ore, I'm glad you didn't just take iron ore and change the color of it a bit, and actually changed the shape of the ore speckles. Looks kind of like a cat scratched it!
Next up, practicability in a let's play situation! I would just like to say, a durability bar (found out the Pocket Nether Link lasts for 8 stacks of blocks and then breaks) was extremely smart of you, because otherwise it would be REALLY overpowered. I'm going to go through the recipes 1 by 1, and say what I think of them. Recipe 1 will be whatever recipe is first, Recipe 2 will be whatever recipe is second in a left to right order in your screenshot and so on. Recipe 1: Seems fair. You aren't going to the Nether and getting the mobs plus the items, just getting items in return for other items, so it makes sense the recipe would be a bit cheaper than an actual Nether portal would be. Recipe 2: This one doesn't make a whole lot of sense. You can just smelt the Quartz Ore and get Quartz, why would you combine the Quartz Ore with another item to get the Nether Quartz Ore and then have to break the Nether Quartz Ore to get the Quartz? Experience, maybe? Still doesn't make much sense to me. Recipe 3/5: These are basically the same recipe so i'll answer with one thing, and they seem fair. Its just a Nether block being made from it's Overworld counterpart, right? Yeah. Makes sense. Recipe 4: I'm not too sure what I think of this one. I mean, obviously sand is the main ingredient. A bone and rotten flesh... it could work. Personally, I would have gone with a slimeball. Recipe 6: This just feels too OP for me. The Soul Sand isn't hard to get, seeds and mushrooms are easy to get. If the Soul Sand used a slimeball I think this recipe would be fair. Recipe 7: This one also seems too OP. If you have obsidian, you're gonna have a crapton of coal and iron. And with the Nether Wart easy to get... just too OP. Recipe 8: I think this one is fair, because, even though the blaze rods aren't that hard to get, you'll still need glistening melon and water bottle and gunpowder. Recipe 9: This one seems a bit too difficult to get. Gunpowder can be hard to get, unless you have a mob farm. Perhaps you should a glowstone BLOCK instead of just the dust? Recipe 10: This one... this one doesn't make any sense to me. So, you added the 3% chance of skeletons dropping their skulls, which is 0.5% more of a chance than Wither Skeletons have of dropping their skulls. So if you get the skeleton skull, you have to put it through the Portal Link, but you ALSO have to add a ghast tear, which, using this mod, uses a recipe that while isn't too hard to make it isn't easy to make. And THEN you have to get a DIAMOND! I think that you should change the recipe to the Portal Link, a skeleton skull, and coal.
So, all in all, I think you have a fantastic mod idea going here, and with some recipe changes, I would definitely consider adding it into my personal modpack! You should also probably add some other things, perhaps "Overworld Fortresses" similar to Nether Fortresses but in the Overworld with new items and things like that, just so you can add more things!
The recipe is mainly there for mod compatibility or the rare off-chance that you want the Nether Quartz Ore block itself. Overworld Quartz ore also drops experience.
Recipe 4: I'm not too sure what I think of this one. I mean, obviously sand is the main ingredient. A bone and rotten flesh... it could work. Personally, I would have gone with a slimeball.
It's a fairly common resource in the nether, giving it a scarce ingredient I feel would discourage the use of the recipe and either make the player go to the nether or leave the player unable to progress, especially when it can be a base component needed in vast amounts to this and other mod's recipes.
Recipe 7: This one also seems too OP. If you have obsidian, you're gonna have a crapton of coal and iron. And with the Nether Wart easy to get... just too OP.
Iron goes by so quickly as it's used in so many recipes(especially with the inclusion of other mods). I feel like using iron is enough of a deterrent for the player to just make a stack of blaze rods...most of the time. I may add glowstone dust to the Blaze Rod recipe as well.
The problem here is, well, the Wither is too dangerous. Although Looting doesn't help the drop chance of Skeleton Skulls(atm), it is still fairly easy to obtain the skull, especially if you include mods that also add a head dropping mechanic(usually at a high chance). Coal is obviously not enough to stop players from creating armies of Withers to rain down on their enemies. The diamond helps discourage the mass production of Withers and in addition with the ghast tear, makes for a tier progression one has to make before their attempt at fighting a Wither.

I love this! It's original and excellently implemented! Though, do you think you could add a config option to make the pocket portal a little more expensive to craft in the first place? 8 obsidian as opposed to 4, for example?
I'd like to see a way to repair the Nether Link. Sadly, Project E's Talisman of Repair doesnt affect it.
I doubt I'll add a way to repair it, the cost involved in making the Pocket Link helps balance how useful it is and it's not hard to just craft another Pocket Link.

I can definitely add a 8 obsidian recipe as a config.

Additionally, I've decided on adding a config to enable skeleton skull drops(only when killed by a player). That will come in the next update.
I don't mind at all and would be glad to see it in modpacks. Adding a modpack section to clarify.
It's set to "false" on default so enable it in the .config if needed

You seem to be forgetting to update the mod version number in the mcmod.info file.
I am aware of that now, though it's not worth a version update to fix.

Sorry for the necro, but would you ever update this once 1.9 Forge is out? I'd love to use it, it looks awesome.

Yea definitely. Should be a simple port.
Well that came out quicker than expected.
Updated Pocket Nether Link for Minecraft 1.9 now.
