When you have this mod installed you can either change the cape URL in your config, or you can go into your world and press V (By default).
If you press V something like this will pop up:
In this window you can simply put the url of the cape you desire. (URL must begin with either http:// or https:// and must end with .png)
If you are done typing or pasting the URL for your desired cape you can simply press "Set URL" and your cape will be updated.

The minecraft eula does not state that capes are forbidden.
As long as everyone has access to this for free it's not illegal.

Sorry, I really like capes and all, and want to have one from a mod, but there was a reason the last one was discontinued and taken down, along with all versions of the aether/all non-recent aether II builds. Capes are regulated by Mojang only.
Higher up officials in the picture within the spoiler are most likely referring to Notch and or Jeb, one of which has already stated his wish.
I know, it is a stupid rule. And the community despises it. You have a nice mod, but keep in mind it will be unsafe to continue it. So I'd recommend keeping it up and just not updating past 1.7.10.

They most likely will not care much, just a heads up.
Anyway, there was a comment above asking if you could craft capes in the future. That does sound like a good idea.
Hey guys, this has not been added to their EULA (I checked yesterday) on their website yet, only on twitter, which I believe does not count legally. There is nothing stating that you must agree with what they post on their twitter. I read the whole thing.
Therefore, this mod is completely allowed until they update their official EULA.
Please stop calling it "illegal". Not to mention, even if it was breaking the EULA, it would not be illegal. It would simply be breaking the EULA, where Mojang has the right to terminate your account or charge you for damages (in which case there would be none).
On another note, glad there is a mod like this. Is there any way of restricting the ability to add/change/give capes to ops, I would like to give capes to admins only to make it clear which players are admins.

Change URL Gui on fancy graphics
Install Minecraft Forge.
Step 2:
Go to your .minecraft/mods folder.
Step 3:
Put advcapes-X.jar in your mods folder.
Step 4:
Start game.
Edit template with paint (Or any image editing software).
Upload cape to website that supports .png URL's (http://imgur.com recommended)

Don't forget to read the crashlog before reporting the crash. It might tell you why it's crashing.

They most likely will not care much, just a heads up.
