A Forge mod for Minecraft 1.8.0 and Minecraft 1.8.9
Summary
This mod protects your items from despawning when you die by storing them on a dead body that you can later loot to get your stuff back. Your dead body is unharmed by fire, explosions, and falling, with configurations options to make your lootable bodies completely invulnerable (or more vulnerable, if you so choose). Simply right-click on a dead body to access its inventory. Use a shovel to dispose of your body after you looted it (3 hits with a shovel will remove the body).

Save Your Inventory When You Die
When you die, this mod spawns a corpse (with your player skin, unless fancy corpses are disabled) and puts all of your inventory on the corpse. Damageable items suffer some damage (configurable), bit will never be destroyed. Even near-by items on the ground are sucked into your corpse, so that even items in extra inventories provided by other mods will also be saved on your corpse.
In the following sequence of images, my character gets killed by a Creeper and then loots his own dead body to get his stuff back.
Your lootable body is fire-proof, explosion-proof, and fall-proof by default.
Not damaged by lava (although keep in mind that dead bodies don't float):
Here is my body right before a TNT explosion...
...and right after.
Disposing Bodies
Hitting a body 3 times with a shovel will dispose it, dropping any equipment it has still on it. Damaging the body with other damage sources will also destroy it if that damage type is enabled by the config options (see Configuration Options below).
Configuration Options
corpse_HP This is the number of half-hearts of damage that needs to be dealt to the body to destroy it. If no damage vulnerabilities are specified, then only a shovel can destroy a body (and it only takes 3 hits from the shovel, no matter how many HP it the body has). Default is 50 (25 hearts). add_bones_to_corpse If set to true, then bones and rotten flesh will be added to your corpse inventory when you die. Default is true. corpse_inventory_size This is the total number of items that the corpse can hold. Only 54 items are visible at a time (the rest will appear in the inventory window as soon as there's space). Default is 108 items and the lowest allowed value is 54 (which is the number of items visible in the GUI). use_player_skin If true, dead bodies use the skins of their former selves. If false, dead bodies are skeletons. item_damage_on_death Damage suffered by damageable items on death (you didn't think that death was a free-ride, did you?). This item damage will never destroy an item, leaving it with 1 durability instead. You can set this value to 0 if you don't want item damage on death, default is 32 durability damage. enable_corpse_decay If true, corpses will self-destruct after a preiod of time (default: false). See also corpse_decay_time. corpse_decay_time If enable_corpse_decay=true, then this is the age at which a dead body will self-destruct, dropping its items. The format is hours:minutes:seconds or just hours:minutes. For example: 0:05 is five minutes and 48:00:10 is two days and ten seconds. Default is 1:00:00 (1 hour). empty_only_decay If true and corpse decay is enabled, then corpses only decay when they have no items on them. hurt_by_weapons If true, bodies can be damaged by attacking it (default: false). hurt_by_fire If true, bodies will be damaged by fire and lava (default: false). hurt_by_fall If true, bodies will be damaged by falling long distances (default: false). hurt_by_explosions If true, bodies will be damaged by creepers and TNT (default: false). Note that if you disable explosion damage but enable fall damage, then explosions will eventually destroy a body by throwing it into the air and hurting it with fall damage. hurt_by_cactus If true, bodies will be damaged by cacti (default: false). hurt_by_block_suffocation If true, bodies will be damaged by being stuck inside a block (default: false). hurt_by_other If true, bodies will be damaged by damage sources not covered by the other options (default: false). hurt_by_all If true, bodies will be damaged by anything that damages a player (default: false).
Known Issues
- The Slime Dungeons mod sometimes conflicts with this mod, causing a crash related to assigning the same entity ID multiple times. Unfortunately, there is nothing I can to Lootable Bodies to prevent this conflict, so if it happens to you, you must either remove Slime Dungeons or Lootable Bodies.
- The dead body model in Lootable Bodies is not the same model as the player, so mods that change the appearance of players will not apply the same change to your dead body.
F.A.Q.
Q: Why can't I have player skins on corpses in Minecraft 1.7.10?
A: Grabbing player skins on demand is a new feature in Minecraft 1.8. I don't have the time nor the interest in reimplementing Minecraft 1.8 in Minecraft 1.7.10.
Q: Please can you add player skins to the 1.7.10 backport?
A: No, I cannot.
Q: Can I use this mod in my public mod pack?
A: Yes you can. You do not need my written permission, though I would appreciate it if you could post a link to your mod pack on this thread so I can check it out for myself.
Q: What happens if my corpse falls into the void?
A: Here's what the experts say:
Q: When I die holding an item from mod ________, the game glitches/crashes/changes the item into something else! How do I fix that?
A: Set item_damage_on_death=0 in the config file and see if that fixes the problem. If not, send me you crash report. The problem here is that some mods use the damage value of an item for metadata but still report the item to be damageable when Lootable Bodies tries to figure out whether the item should receive item damage.
Q: Could you please port this mod to Minecraft 1.7.2/1.6.4/1.5.2/etc.?
A: No way! Just backporting to 1.7.10 added an addtional 200 lines of rendering code. Minecraft 1.8 is so much easier. Going back even further would be unbearably painful. However, there's nothing stopping you from forking my GitHub project and making your own backport.
This mod is open source. You may include it in your mod-packs, but remember to give credit to me (Cyanobacterium aka Dr. Cyano aka Synechocystis). You do not need to ask for my permission, but feel free to post links to your mod-pack on this thread.

Yeah, I got fed-up with waiting for a 1.8 "Death Chest" mod, so I made my own. I'm very pleased with how this one turned out.

I have a problem where the body disappears with all my stuff.
There's a bug in Forge that makes entities invisible (not just the dead bodies, but mobs too) when you die. To make them reappear, either log-out and back in again or move far enough away that the chunk reloads. The problem seems to be less frequent with a multiplayer server.
This mod really glitches for me it like twitches the body weird.
Could you provide a more detailed description and confirm which version of Forge you are using? I'd like to fix as many glitches as I can.
Perhaps a 1.7.10 port to the mod, and perhaps different body positions at random? some facing up, some facing sides some facing down?
I might be able to port it to 1.7.10, though I really prefer Minecraft 1.8 modding.
I have thought about having different body positions and I'm open to suggestions about how that might work.

My concern with non-player entities dropping bodies is that entities use a lot of network traffic to constantly update their position and other properties. A server where the number of entities was unlimited (because a new entity was added for each mob that was slain) would eventually be so laggy as to be unplayable. I also don't have a way of generalizing the body rendering, so mobs from other mods wouldn't be supported.
That being said, it would be pretty cool for boss-like mobs to leave a body. So if anyone is working on a rogue-like mod, I'd be happy to help the developer add lootable mob bodies to their mod.

I love this mod. And just to add to those annoying people that beg for a 1.7.10 port, I will say WE NEED A 1.7.10. Not very many mods are available for 1.8 and 1.8 is also very buggy.

Also, if you find a bug, I'll need more information than "I have a problem where the body disappears". Please tell me the following:
1. What version of Forge you are using (the whole version string, not just "1.8")
2. Whether or not the body was ever visible or if it never appeared in the first place
3. Does the body reappear if you logout of your world and then log back in
4. Do other entities (e.g. cows) also disappear in the same area where the body was?
5. Can you summon a lootable body with the /summon command? (/summon lootablebodies_EntityLootableBody)
6. What version of Java are you using and what version of OpenGL does your graphics card suport?

Damageable items suffer some damage (configurable), bit will never be destroyed. Even near-by items on the ground are sucked into your corpse, just in case you accidentally threw your sword at the zombie when you meant to attack it (D'oh!).

Disposing Bodies
Hitting a body 3 times with a shovel will dispose it, dropping any equipment it has still on it. Damaging the body with other damage sources will also destroy it, unless the corpse_indestructible=true option is set in the config file (see Configuration Options below).
Configuration Options corpse_HP This is the number of half-hearts of damage that needs to be dealt to the body to destroy it. If corpse_indestructible=true, then only a shovel can destroy a body. Default is 50 (25 hearts).
corpse_indestructible If this option is set to true, then all damage is prevented to the body. This means that the only way to get rid of a body is to use a shovel (which will destroy a body after 3 hits, no matter how much health it has). This option is false by default.
use_player_skin If true, dead bodies use the skins of their former selves. If false, dead bodies are skeletons.
corpse_fireproof If true, corpses are not destroyed by fire or lava. If false, then your dead body is flammable. Default is true.
corpse_blastproof If true, corpses are not destroyed by explosions. If false, then your dead body can be blown-up by a creeper. Default is true.
corpse_fallproof If true, corpses are not destroyed by falling. If false, then your dead body can be destroyed by being pushed off a tall cliff. Default is true.
item_damage_on_death Damage suffered by damageable items on death (you didn't think that death was a free-ride, did you?). This item damage will never destroy an item, leaving it with 1 durability instead. You can set this value to 0 if you don't want item damage on death, default is 32 durability damage.

DragonGamerHD56, I'd really like to fix that bug, but I'll need more details than that.
im using the latest version of forge
The "latest version" changes every day. Do you mean Forge-11.14.0.1252? Forge-11.14.0.1262? or maybe Forge-11.14.0.1267? I need the whole version number so I can replicate your issues on my computer.
im using java 64 bit
Which java? Are you using java 6 or 7 or 8? And are you running on Windows, Linux, or Mac OSX? Run java -version in the command line to get that information.
no it doesn't reapper it's just wiggles around
So is the body invisible or is it wiggling?
and sometimes even teleport at north
I don't understand this statement. Are you refering to the body's orientation or position? How far does it teleport? Under what conditions does it teleport?
MUCH WEIRD MUCH CRAZY!
Sounds like some kind of bug. I'd like to fix that. How about a screenshot to better demonstrate the problem?
When you make the 1.7.10 version, can you make it so Millenaire villagers also have dead bodies on death? Plus, when this is for 1.7.10, can I use it in my modpack?
I'm afraid I do no have the time to do that. Mobs are not players and it would take just as much work to make that feature as it did to create the mod so far. However, since this mod is open-source, you're free to implement that feature yourself.
And yes, you may use this mod in your modpack. You do not need my explicit permission because this mod is open-source. I'd love to get a link to you mod-pack when its done (if it is a public mod-pack).
Would it be possible to spawn in certain player corpses?
It already is possible. I didn't advertise this feature because the server doesn't load the other skins unless you stop it and relaunch. The command is as follows:
Where angle is the angle of rotation (a number from 0 to 360) and userName is the usename whose skin you want to use (for the default skin, use "" as the name or leave out the name field).

Just wondered, maybe someone could use this to make a Skyrim mod?
I just took the Minecraft Noob test! Check out what I scored. Think you can beat me?!

Don't click this link, HE is haunting it...
For example, say I wanted to make a haunted house sort of map, and I wanted to have more than just my skin on the corpses.
Is that possible?
thanks.

The "latest version" changes every day. Do you mean Forge-11.14.0.1252? Forge-11.14.0.1262? or maybe Forge-11.14.0.1267? I need the whole version number so I can replicate your issues on my computer.
Which java? Are you using java 6 or 7 or 8? And are you running on Windows, Linux, or Mac OSX? Run java -version in the command line to get that information.
So is the body invisible or is it wiggling?
I don't understand this statement. Are you refering to the body's orientation or position? How far does it teleport? Under what conditions does it teleport?
Sounds like some kind of bug. I'd like to fix that. How about a screenshot to better demonstrate the problem?
I'm afraid I do no have the time to do that. Mobs are not players and it would take just as much work to make that feature as it did to create the mod so far. However, since this mod is open-source, you're free to implement that feature yourself.
And yes, you may use this mod in your modpack. You do not need my explicit permission because this mod is open-source. I'd love to get a link to you mod-pack when its done (if it is a public mod-pack).
It already is possible. I didn't advertise this feature because the server doesn't load the other skins unless you stop it and relaunch. The command is as follows:
/summon lootablebodies_EntityLootableBody ~ ~ ~ {Yaw:angle, Name:userName}
Where angle is the angle of rotation (a number from 0 to 360) and userName is the usename whose skin you want to use (for the default skin, use "" as the name or leave out the name field).
