So I tried to install this using forge on 1.7.10. The mod shows up in the list of forge mods, but all I get in game is a bunch of purple and black tiled foliage. Do I need something else that's missing?
Using Minecraft 1.7.2, Forge 10.12.2.1161, Baubles 1.0.0.16, BetterFoliage 0.9.3b.
I too get missing textures (black and purple blocks). It must be noted that I have just upgraded from Baubles 1.0.0.15/BetterFoliage 0.9 where this issue did not yet exist.
I hope this is somewhat helpful, as i LOVE the mod, it makes MC feel so much more alive and realistic.
EDIT: Downgraded to 0.9, and the issue is gone. It definitely is something that has changed between 0.9 and 0.9.3b
I don't quite understand all of this talk with the textures, so I have a question.
Without resource pack support, Better Grass & Leaves did a good job of providing things. It looked more akin to the default look, but that's the best fallback, and I get the feeling you are aiming for the same? This is a good idea, but my question is, will we still be able to use resource packs to modify the stuff, or no, (ala, is it going to be "hard coded", more or less, to only whatever you have it use with no way to override it)?
2. Oh, all right. Peer pressure is a terrible thing
Since everyone else likes them, and doing it is almost trivial after everything else I have in place already, I'll do it.
Although falling leaves were on the table since the beginning.
Yay! (Again!) I'm not kidding when I'm about as excited as updating to using this as I am the next official Minecraft stuff. I've missed this that much! The world became more sterile and lifeless without it, and I loved how the mod gave it a little bit of ambiance and visual candy without actually adding blocks or items into the game. It was just client-side rendered stuff. I think this is why the few of us who really want the reeds want them.
Of course not, it is not a requirement, never has been.
To quote OctarineNoise: "The mod does not need textures supplied for the crossed leaf polygons for each and every leaf type, as it will generate them on the fly, making it very easy to use: it will (should) support every mod and texture pack automagically."
Besides, if it suddenly between 0.9 and 0.9.3b had become a requirement, don't you think it would have been made obviously clear?

Cross leaf textures are generated, and are "hardcoded" as such - i.e. you can't change them with a resource pack (although a resource pack could provide the transparency mask that is used in the process). They will always reflect the underlying normal leaf textures you have loaded.
The rest of the stuff (short grass, cactus sides, mycelium, etc.) are just regular textures, and can be overriddes as usual. Resource packs made for BG&L should work fine, just be sure you put them above the BG&L mod in the pack list.
To quote OctarineNoise: "The mod does not need textures supplied for the crossed leaf polygons for each and every leaf type, as it will generate them on the fly, making it very easy to use: it will (should) support every mod and texture pack automagically."
Take care that is only for leaves. The end of the section also says: "For all other features besides leaves, the mod relies on Better Grass & Leaves, using it as a resource pack"
This has been the case since 0.9.2b, see post #42.
OctarineNoise, what do you think about adding an extra round mask for the default leaf block textures to replicate BG&L's look, or the option to do it as BG&L did it - with custom made round textures? Right now the edges poke still a bit out of the rounded diagonal leaves.
You mean the "rounded vanilla leaves" feature from BG&L? Yes, that's doable.
i've been playing alot of skyrim lately. and there was a mod for skyrim wich also adds better grass. what he did was made grass more dense. will you add this feature? so there are more grass frames/sides on a block?
So what you mean is... an option to set the number of shortgrass crosses per block? That's easy to do, but the performance impact would go up proportionally.

and im also a fan of shaders. is there a way to fix the shadow bug with the grass? maybe make the grass one pixel lower? or does this has to be fixed in the shaders?
Hmmm... That's a very good idea. I'll try moving the grass a few pixels down, that should in theory make the shadows behave nicer.
and maybe add a randomization for the grass to greate grass spods. so there are spots with dense grass and empty bits between the spots?
I'll try this out too, see if it looks good. I've just started messing with the gradient noise field code provided by Minecraft worldgen anyway (the same thing is needed for reeds too).
BetterFoliage (1.7.10, 1.8, 1.8.8, 1.8.9, 1.9, 1.9.4, 1.10) - Leafier leaves and grassier grass CartLivery (1.6.4, 1.7.x) - Pimp your minecarts

the better foliage feature looks fantastic but i'm having troubles with the grass. I see the magenta-black panels in all the tiles where grass is not present. I'm trying to disable the grass feature from the F8 gui and from the config but it keeps reappearing at every restart. I did the part about putting the old mod in the resourcepac folder as a zip but nothing changes. Not sure what to do actually. Using the 1.7.10 with latest forge
It's not enough to just copy the old mod in the resourcepack folder, you have to activate it as well. Go to options / resource packs, and click it to the right side.
As for the grass reappearing every restart, I derped with the config loading. I'll fix it next release.

Reeds will tend to clump together a bit - the technical details of which mean that "reed chance" will only be approximate
Reeds will not appear in cold and/or arid biomes (temp AND rainfall must be >= 0.4)
Otherwise, every dirt block with 1 water then an air block above it is a suitable position for reeds (regardless of distance to shore)
The GUI is broken up into pages, and the config file is restructured too - you will revert back to default settings
Up to 16 texture variations are supported for non-leaves textures (to make texture pack creators happy - you won't notice this right away)

seems like a lot of people are failing to add the resourcepack and activate it.
if you want to stop seeing the missing textures everywhere, maybe it is something they should do (personally i feel the opening post clarified this pretty well, people just seem to not like reading.)
I've been avoiding 1.7 because I couldn't deal with minecraft without BG&L. Thank you so much for continuing (or, well, redoing) this work. It is very much appreciated.
So I know you just apply a mask to the leaf textures to round them off, but, as a resource pack author, I'd really like to see the ability to add specific textures for each tree in the resource pack. I create 256x textures, which contain whole and recognizable leaves, and having them cut off according to the mask you use gives them a very unnatural feel. I could redesign them to work with a mask, but then I'd need to create all the leaves in the same basic pattern, which doesn't really make sense. Spruce leaves look nothing like oak leaves.
So, I guess I'd either like the ability to define a custom leaf texture for each leaf type(preferable), or, if that would be too difficult in your system, I'd like to be able to create a custom mask for each leaf type.
Done well, this can give the appearance of individual branches coming out of the leaves, which looks very nice.
Not sure if this is a problem with just me, but whenever I disable the grass part of this mod, it re-enables itself with each startup. I noticed that minecraft doesnt save settings unless the "Done" button is pressed. This mod only has a "close" button... Sounds dumb, but maybe that has something to do with it?
I really need to get around to making a new profile for 1.7.10, but I've been procrastinating with it a bit (I have over three PCs to do all the updating to, which includes Minecraft itself, OptiFine, any potential resource pack changes (shouldn't be any for this one, but I think I'll have to hurt myself again getting the custom colors to work right again once 1.8 comes), and now Forge and this mod.

The custom leaf mask feature was in early versions, but I dropped it. Mainly because the mask was giving good results: well, it seems that's no longer the case for extreme resolutions. But if you must draw a custom mask for a leaf, then you might as well draw the round texture itself.
I'll implement a kind of override in the next version: if a hand-drawn round leaf texture exists it will be used, otherwise it's back to automatic generation.

Wow. I did a selfsearch out of curiosity, and was surprised and pissed off at the amount of Minecraft "modding sites" out there that seem to be made with a crappy template, a trawler bot and maybe Google Translate. Naturally, the information is dead wrong and they mirror the files.
The license has changed slightly as a result - nothing that would concern any end users (just FYI).

Exactly. Until I have enough textures of my own to drop BG&L as a dependency, at which point i'll change the resource namespace back to betterfoliage. Just to mess with you guys
Oh nice!
By the way, i've started a few simple default style replacement textures - so far only for the existing features.
I'm very excited to see the final result.

In Minecraft your own pack has to be above the BG&L mod resource pack (you can also remove the BG&L pack if you have replaced all necessary textures).
I think I know where I went wrong. I had a "texture", but not a "textures" (missing the "s"), directory since your original post listed it as such. I'm guessing it was a simple mistake. I'll have to go back and try it again, and it's good to know I won't need old Better Grass & Leaves mod, er... resource pack in that case.
So glad to see someone carrying on the BG&L style. It just adds a little richness to the visuals without going all-out like shaders do.
My favorite setting for the old BG&L was the "fancier" Better Grass mode, which had 2 planes of grass overhanging the edges of non-flush grass blocks. It gave the grass a super-poofy and lush appearance. From the demo videos so far, it looks like that isn't implemented. Is it planned?
I too get missing textures (black and purple blocks).
