So how do you do it? I'll back my stuff up and give it a try to see if I feel like I can live with it.
Just re-create the world in question without Highlands in the mod folder, explore the mountain range you want to keep, then close the game and add Highlands. Be sure to generate the config and set it the way you want it before starting this experiment, otherwise you might wind up with two sets of chunk walls.

Wait... just to be clear. You want him to create the world using Highlands. Exit the game. Remove Highlands. Start the game and explore the mountain range. And then add Highlands again?
2 other ways:
You could simply copy over the region files from your default type seed world to a Highlands world.
You could use NBT-Explorer to edit the world-type of your save file.
I created a cinematic for this mod about two years ago. The quality isn't great, however if you like it... well... here it is
Don't put yourself down, it's far better than some of the "reviews" people have made for Highlands.
Thank you for actually finding the different biomes, and recording them to video. OK so I've changed some of them, Outback has red sand now for instance, but it's still good.
Oh and 1.8 Highlands is down to 183 compiler errors now.
This mod has an incompatibility with Thermal Dynamics. (Found out by process of elimination)
When in creative, opening the inventory and going to the creative search tab crashes the client.
This crash is easy to reproduce with only Highlands, CoFHCore, Thermal Foundation and Thermal Dynamics installed.
Suggestion for a new tree/biome, inspired by my ongoing visit to Hawaii. It'll be hard to do, but I think the result would be worth it.
The tree (Thicket tree, not sure of its proper name): a solid sphere, 5-6 blocks in radius, covered with a 1-3 block thick shell of foliage. However, instead of log blocks, its wood would be a network of branches, fully transparent to light and vaguely resembling fence blocks, and fairly quick to chop. When two thicket trees are grown close together, the wood overwrites the foliage but the reverse is not true, so the two balls become one big thicket, and the sapling would have minimal "personal space" requirements so that this would be easy to do. (Obviously neither block overwrites any opaque block: the tree conforms to the ground, not excavates it).
The biome (or perhaps sub-biome): just a sea of thicket trees, planted so densely they become a single unbroken mass, perhaps with a few conventional trees growing through them, with tropical foliage colors.
I'm aware this would be hard to implement, but I think it would be worth it for the interesting new build environment. It would almost be like building underwater, only easier. It would be dark down there, but since every block space is occupied by a transparent but solid block, there would be no mobs except where you'd cleared a space and not lit it. However, cutting out passages would be much easier than constructing and draining underwater passageways. Towers might rise out of the sea of foliage, linked by passageways cut out of the thicket below, the whole biome a natural fortress against the monsters outside.

For those of you who, like me, may have missed it these past days, sdj64 the original creator of Highlands is back into the modding scene and has released an alpha version of an alternative to Highlands for 1.8 called Highlands - Uncharted Territories. Features are missing as it's in early stage but he's open to suggestions including compatibilities issues.
While it contains some of the previous Highlands features, it's a different mod (less biomes, new biomes, less trees, new trees, new terrain generation, no islands so far). I look forward to the possibility of running both regular Highlands and Highlands-UT at the same time in the future after disabling a few redundant biomes.
This sounds nice.

Will this mod have eventually have compatibility with ExtraBiomesXL? I know its compatible with BiomesOPlenty but was wondering about if the former will also.
Not only does this mod have a crash problem with Thermal Dynamics (as documented by Robijnvogel above), it also has a huge issue with Minefactory Reloaded which prevents harvesters and fruit pickers from working with non-vanilla items (berry bushes from Natura or fruit trees from Harvestcraft.)
Since it seems that this mod is abandoned at 2.2.3, I'd advise not using it for any modpacks.
Exactly the way you would do it, there's no other way to do it.
Good day. This perfect mod. I'm have the problem, I don't activation (on) rain in all biomes, and not found configuration to set rain settings, help!

OK, thanks
Thanks for the extra suggestions

Nope, it's mostly just things that are renamed, altered in function.
Down to 18 errors now.
Odds are it won't work properly once all the errors are fixed, But i'll deal with that when I get into testing.
Anyone else having "Already Decorating!" errors on 1.7.10?

Looks awesome! Can't wait to try it. It would be cool if someone made an addon for spawning non vanilla animals in the added biomes.
I'm not having an issue with highlands and thermal dynamics at all.
Using MC: 1.7.10
FORGE: 10.13.4.1481
Highlands: 2.2.3
COFHcore: 3.0.3-303
Thermal Foundation: 1.2.0-102
Thermal Dynamics: 1.1.0-161
Thermal Expansion: 4.0.3B1-218
and 196 mods total, 3GB RAM, mean ticks are a steady 20ms after 10 second world-gen lag spike on initial world creation.
can you post your crash log?

Suggestion for a new tree/biome, inspired by my ongoing visit to Hawaii. It'll be hard to do, but I think the result would be worth it.
The tree (Thicket tree, not sure of its proper name): a solid sphere, 5-6 blocks in radius, covered with a 1-3 block thick shell of foliage. However, instead of log blocks, its wood would be a network of branches, fully transparent to light and vaguely resembling fence blocks, and fairly quick to chop. They are indeed. Unfortunately, it's 1.8 as I understand it. Hopefully they realize the problems caused in 1.7.10 and don't replicate them in 1.8.
Good day.
Can someone explain how to get this mod working on a server?
All level.type i try was not working.
Or it's more complicated then just change a line?
Thank you for reading and again - good day.
